I'm finally recovered, for the most part, from my bitter bout. Mine only lasted about 4 days, thankfully. It did taper off and so yesterday wasn't as bad as the day before. Today, I can still sense just a very slight bitterness and only after certain foods. Yes, I had eaten pine nuts a day or maybe 2 days prior to the onset of my symptoms. My only symptom was the bitter sensation upon eating anything and then lasting long after having eaten.

I have eaten pine nuts many times in the past and never had any reaction before. These pine nuts looked and tasted the same as all the other batches that I've had before. This batch had been in my freezer for probably 3 months or so, but I've stored them for that long before and not had a problem. I did not eat any more from this batch after finding this forum. If I was brave and really wanted to confirm the anecdotal evidence I would, but that bitter taste was just too awful.

Add me to the list!! Have eaten pine nuts my entire life with no issues. Made homemade pesto on Sunday night. Had a bunch of bags of Badia pine nuts in the fridge. THey were most definitely outdated, but I do not like to waste food so I tasted maybe 15 nuts to see if they were spoiled. THey tasted ok to me so I used them in the pesto. 2 days later I get the exact same taste symptoms being described on all these pages. It most defnitely has to be the nuts. Min had to be rancid as they were a year old. I just wish I new if it was the age of the nuts, their origin, or has my body changed something? I am going home and rumaging through my garbage to find the bags the nuts came in. I want to know what the hell is going on and where they came from. A couple of the bags are still unopened in the bottom of the garbage. As for the pesto, I will be throwing it all in the garbage tonight. Too bad! It was my first basil harvest from my garden. Wasted basil, cheese and olive oil. Stuff is not cheap.

If anyone has any info from a medical point of view, please post something!! We cannot all be wrong on this. I am in IT and when we see a pattern like this in the world of computers it is considered a true global issue and all "ants" are called on deck.

I just received the lab analysis for the pine nuts that I ate four weeks ago.

My nutritionist thought the symptoms that I described to her -the bitter metallic aftertaste and digestive disturbance sounded like mercury contamination. Indeed a urine test that I had two weeks after eating the pine nuts showed elevated mercury.

The lab test showed less than the detection limit for mercury and most other heavy metals. Aluminum and copper made a showing as did lower detections of cadmium, nickel and tin. So it remains a mystery as to why people are experiencing this weird taste disturbance after eating pine nuts from China.

My symptoms are gone now but I will be following up with checking on whether or not my dental fillings are leaking mercury. Good health to you all.

Man i cant believe i have found this thread. The world is full of strange coincidences or is it.
Like everone else I have a disgusting taste in my mouth and siliva, all my food tastes horrid and earlier I threw away some parmisan cheese coz I though it was off.
Was getting fed up and googled and cannot believe I have found this thread!!!!!!!
My mum has just come back from syberia in russia (we r from scotladn UK) and she brought back pine nuts that she bought at a local market I probably ate about 4 handfuls on fri and sat (todsy is sun evening). She also brought a pine nut cone as a special present for me which is very interesting and makes me realise why the nuts r so expensive!!!
Anyway this evening I developed the horrible taste, so after at least a day after eating the nuts. Also On fri nite we went out for a meal in an itailan restaurant and I had pasta pesto which wasnt very good. I have absolutely no idea where there pine nuts came from.
I have no idea what blood group I am and am definately not pregnant. Like every1 else I have eaten pine nuts plenty before. I was wondering if this is a new problem in recent years. Is there anything we can do to complain? Please reply and say how long it lasts.

I rarely eat pine nuts, but usually love them when I do. It was Saturday when I ate them and noticed the taste for the first time today when I put banana on my morning cereal. I am so shocked that this is probably the cause of this bitter taste especially when I eat bread products and dairy, particularly yogurt. The ones I ate were from "China, Portugal" but packed in the USA. I am going to contact them tomorrow through their toll-free number on the package and ask them about this. This really makes me realize how easily it would be to eat something contaminated without being aware of it. Scary!

Since not many seem to be updating or following up on their posts…Been a week since my original post where I too mysteriously began to experience this phenomenon two days after eating either old or Chinese pine nuts. The good news is that I am not dead yet and though the bitter taste is still present, it definitely has decreased in strength. Seems like everyday it gets a bit weaker. I just wish it would hurry up!! I am getting tired of it.

I did ask my buddy who is an ER physician, about this. He had no clue what is was. His answer was “let me give some steroids. That’s what we do when we don’t know what else to do to fix something.” GREAT!!! Now there’s a way to build faith in our medical system.

Will try to update as things move forward.

Thanks for this post - my husband and I are experiencing the same thing. At first we thought something was seriously wrong when for the past several days we had this awful bitter aspirin taste in our mouths. After reading this post though we realized it was linked to the raw pine nuts we have been eating lately (bought from Whole Foods - bag says from China) on salads. This is the first I have ever heard of anything like this happening with pine nuts - I am very curious to know what's going on with this year's harvest.

I'm having the same problem but I don't think I've had pine nuts at all so something else is causing it. The funny thing is that I love the taste of aspirin so when I get this taste in my mouth it makes me crave aspirin. Yeah, weird, I know. Anyway, it does seem like my mouth is watering an awful lot.

Usually elevated mercury would be from eating a lot of fish but I don't eat fish at all.

I have the same problem as another writer who mentioned a tongue sensitivity to walnuts and acidic foods. I have trouble with most fruits and aged foods.

This has happened before, in fact it seems like a couple of times a year. I would love to know what causes it. ?

Thank you to all who have posted their comments about this phenomenon. They have been very helpful in my experience.

I ate pine nuts two days ago purchased from Whole Foods Market in Winston-Salem, NC. packaged in the blue "365 EVERYDAY VALUE" resealable bag. The product label said they were a product of China and "Best Before 12/25/2009".

Having never eaten pine nuts before, I checked online to research the nutrition facts about them and to see if they really came from pine trees.
I searched at the Wikipedia site and saw the article about the risks of eating pine nuts. So I was aware that the bitterness was a problem for some people. I hoped I would not be one of those people since I had already eaten some before my research. The best part of this is that when the bitterness set in I was not panicked. :-)

I will be reporting this incident to the FDA and keeping these nuts until I am sure they won't be needed for further investigation.

I posted a couple of months back about my experience with the bitter taste & that it went away after approximately 8 days. Last week I ate some hummus that had pine nuts in it. I didn't notice them until I'd had several bites. Just wanted to follow-up and say that I've NOT experienced the horrible taste again. I don't know that I want to purposefully go out and taste a bunch of pine nuts again just to check if the bitterness returns, but I am happy to report that it may have been a one-time thing as opposed to a lifetime pine nuts issue.

To all of you suffering from the bitterness right now, stock up on sugar-free peppermint gum, diet soda and chicken. Those are the only things that consistently seemed palatable. You'll be back to your old self within a week or so. Good luck!

I've left a message some time ago, when I still had the terrible taste from the pine nuts in my salad. I can inform you that the taste has disappeared after 2 weeks. :D So, hang in there, the taste will go away!
Good luck from the Netherlands.

OMG, I was so happy to find this thread. I kept describing this weird bitter, metallic taste in the back of my tongue/throat to friends and family who thought I was crazy. They thought it was reflux, but I knew that it wasn't. Guess what? I ate a lot of pine nuts last week. In a coating for chicken (cooked), as well as handfuls raw. I've been eating pine nuts for a long time without experiencing this problem. Now I am so, so sad. I don't think I'll want to take the chance again. I think I'm on day 5? I'm praying it ends soon - it's miserable : ( BTW, my pine nuts were distributed by Dell'Alpe. Doesn't say where they are imported from.

This is crazy! I made some pesto over the weekend w/ pine nuts from trader joes. The bad taste started on Sunday and I just chalked it up to inhaling cleaning solution vapors or something. So today (Tuesday), I used the rest of the pesto to make a cream sauce for my pasta because I thought that the pesto would get rid of the taste in my mouth since I love it so much. Go figure, I finished the bowl of pasta, then googled my symptoms and find this! I guess I have nothing useful to add, but needed to get this out... Now I'm probably looking at another week of bad taste since I just ate that pasta a few minutes ago. 8-|

I did eat pine nuts from Safeway2 days ago. Have been miserable with the biter taste in my mouth. It was very mild the first day, but then the by the 3erd day was getting worse. Yesterday i tried a tea made of a natural herb, is call "BOLDO" The brand is TANDIN, is available in Mexican stores. The bitterness has gone down almost 50 % by today after drinking one in the morning and one in the afternoon. I also tried an effervescence antacid call "PICOT", thank god it has helped me a lot. I thought I was going mad..... my colleague thought it was psychosomatic (my mother in law is staying at my house). I purchased china grown pines nuts 6 days ago from a bulk store. I have been eating them every day and have had a miserable foul taste ever since. I went to the chemist, thought I might have zinc deficiency. He advised against supplements without seeing doctor. Then - thank god - I googled and founds this site. Will never eat pine nuts again.
