I had Laser done on 15th of Feb. 2008 and at first i was very concerned.
i had a very difficult time urinating weak stream, pain in my penis tip, blood, urgency, worst than before surgery, it lasted for about 2 to 3 weeks
getting a little better very slowly. However the doctor said be patient it will come around and it did. Am i happy i did this. before i was getting up at night every 2 hours was very tired during the day. was going sometimes every 1/2 hour in the day it was horrible i couldnt stand it but
now i am peeing like a racehorse, no pain, no urgency and sex life is back to normal. i recommend this to anyone having problems like mine. Just be patient after surgery and it should be great.

I am 68 years old. I had T.U.N.A. (Transurethral Needle Ablation) for obstructive B.P.H. 4 years before. The improvement had not been great and soon I had to take a Flomax capsule daily. In the last year I increased to 2 capsules of Flomax daily. Then I couldn't void and had to self insert a Foley Catheter. That night I discovered Greenlight Laser on the internet. Previously I only knew of Interstitial Laser for B.P.H. and the reviews of the procedure were not good. I went to YouTube.com and was pleasantly surprised and delighted with the videos of the Greenlight Laser PVP procedure by the Madrid Urologist Dr. Gomez-Sancha. More research picked a plum: Greenlight PVP caused minimal bleeding and could be performed on patients who were on Coumadin, the blood thinner, which I was on(for Atrial Fibrillation).
The Urologist did the usual pre-op tests including Urodynamics to make sure my problem was not due to a weak bladder. A week later I was under general anesthesia for the procedure which lasted about an hour and a half. When I woke up the Urologist told me he would admit me overnight. I had an indwelling Foley catheter and double bags of saline dripping into my bladder and out all through the catheter to prevent blood clots. I was somewhat uncomfortable (3 on a scale of 1 to 10) and was given a tablet which eased the discomfort. The next day, 24 hours post-op, the catheter was removed and I went home. I have had no trouble at all, no burning sensation, no pain, no hesitation, voiding with a strong stream and completely emptying my bladder. The only thing bothersome was that the urine was bloody. I had not expected that.
When I saw the Urologist a week later he said that the urine would be bloody for weeks until the tunnel through the large prostate heals. Till then there would be intermittent almost clearing and sudden bleeding. There might be clots. The "wound" through the prostate would heal with a crust, inhibiting oozing of blood, then the crust would fall away followed by an increased oozing of blood. "See me in 3 months!".
My internist was surprised that my hemoglobin was at normal levels. I wasn't losing that much blood at all inspite of the alarming color of my urine. The urine color faded slowly with intermittent spikes of red until the middle of the 6th week post-op when it cleared completely to the normal pale straw color. And I am still voiding as strongly as the day after when the Foley catheter was removed and without any discomfort whatsoever.
My external hemorrhoids have receded about 85%. The varicocele on the left side has shrunk about the same. Because I no longer take Avodart and Flomax, conjugal relations without Sildenafil are back.

I am 62 and had a TURP performed on the 2nd of April 2008 - just short of 4 weeks ago, as I write this. I had spinal anaesthesia. The theatre experience was ok and I was back in the ward in 2 hours and given some light food and drink. The catheter was uncomfortable and I was given a local injection in the penis that evening along with Panadol. Next day, the catheter was removed. I was allowed to go home the following morning as I was peeing out more than was being left in the bladder and that was good.
At home I used a plastic bottle to wee into so I could see what was being passed. It was still quite bloody of course and there was a deal of the resection particles. And it hurt for about 10 days or so. Gradually the pee has become clear and particle free. It is great to be able to pee like a 10 year old again. A WORD OF WARNING. DON'T try sexual activity too soon. I masturbated 19 days post TURP and experienced retrograde ejaculation for the first time. It hurt a bit and made myself bleed more. Then just yesterday, the 27th April, I figured I would have another go. It hurt more and bled more and particles of prostate were passed. I was sore most of the day and drank plenty of water. After a couple of pees all was clear again. I am off to see my local doctor today and I bet he tells me to forget about sexual stuff until everything is healed properly. I guess it is only common sense. I think one can get used to the ejaculate thing as time passes and there is no pain.

:-) ! :-| I had greenlight lazer surgery on 5-1-08, was sent home with a catheter to remain in place for 4 days and carried a back around 24 hrs daily, small one in day, large one hanging on bed at night. MD I think did a good job, took catheter out following Monday on the 5th, used antibiotic ointment and antibiotic pills for number of days, went through 24yrs daily of urgency and dripping of release and finally after 4 days, on the 5th day, started a normal flow of urine with some past drip as a minor problem afterward. Was a pain in the ... with the MD, RN, calling often during this time. Found the comments in this site very helpful which told me something to share as an observation. My MD was very methodical, did complete biopsy to start to rule out cancer, then did uriine test ( don't know name) to assess release and bladder control, then did cystescope and showed me picutre of protate growth in the bladder at the point of release into the urethra and informed me that was appropriate for greenlight. Thinks diagnostics are key. Eugene
I had laser prostate ablation 5 weeks ago and am now getting back to nomal activities and exercising on a limited basis. Other than blood clots and the catheter for a week, and slight pain in tip of penis (which continues), I have experienced no other problems. I too thought that it would be a piece of cake and back to my exercise routine in a couple of weeks. I think taking it easy longer than Doctors recommend is the wise choice. Probably will not be back to exercise routine for maybe a couple more weeks. I am not on a very limited routine. I too had a very enlarged prostate and my BPH symptoms have decreased dramatically since surgery, and experiencing no real problems, other than some pain after exercise, which seems to be diminishing. I will say that it has taken much more time to recover than I thought.
I am 56 years old and had my surgery on 6/4/2008. I have my fingers crossed because, for me, everything has gone relatively smoothly so far. I had all the symptoms: urgency, fluid retention on a regular basis and my stream was very weak and not much better after being on two doses of flomax per day and avodart for about 5 months. Finally took my urologists recommendation and went for the surgery. Worse part was the catheter for me but had that removed after a day. Urine had cleared up and have seen very little blood after that. I was peeing like a race horse right after I got the catheter removed and dribbled a few diluted blood drops for the first few days. Did feel a little weak for the first few days but basically feel back to normal five days after the surgery. Urgency and the pain at the tip of the penis is mostly gone. I'm going kind of stir crazy because I am some what compulsive about exercising ( bike about 15 miles per day and lift every other day) but after reading these posts, I will hold off until my next doctor's visit on 6/19. Just thought I'd post since most of the stories here do not seem to be good and I wouldn't want others scared away from the surgery based on the stories here without some balance. Just hope my progress doesn't revert.
Just came back from the hospital for the second time after GL. Husband is feeling like a guinea pig for the university medical folks. He was doing just fine, even considering he had a mild heart attack the night after his GL surgery and had to have a stent put in. Catheter had been removed and he was peeing normally.
Four weeks after the surgery, however, he had a bleeder and really painful bladder spasms.
They went in after the bleeder, said they got it, sent him home and two days later we are back in with bleeding.
I think this time he may have strained a bit having a BM just prior to the bleeding. Go figure, someone forgot to advise a stool softener after having him on codeine for three days for the spasms!
This time, urine seems to be clearing up more quickly. So, with any luck, he'll be home faster and without another bleeder hunt. He was feeling so good to be out of the hospital, too.

7-1-08 Had the green light laser procedure 25 hours ago. Had the cathetor for 16 hours; gave me a little problem pulling on my member when I would turn over in bed and was definitely not comfortable but I survived and it was removed this a.m. Had to go back to doc 4 hours later to have sonogram. Voided 4 times in those 4 hours, no problems but a little stinging. Last void the urine was yellow instead of pink or redder. I feel good; still wonder what might come up but at this moment it's all good. Sonogram shows I'm emptying the bladder. That's good. I am 60, no significant physical issues so hopefully it will go well. I asked Dr. if could drive 300 miles out of town (6 hrs) this weekend and he said "NO." Didn't want me that far away. Also don't think he wanted me to be driving 6 hours. My Physician is John Chandler Williams in Jacksonville Beach. Seems to know his stuff. Don't have to return for at least a couple of weeks.
I'll be 58 next month and I had Green Light Laser one week ago. My wife spoke to the doc post-op and he told her I had very little bleeding and all went well. The worst part was the nurse who failed to fully deflate the catheter the next morning when removing it. That hurt and I bled like a bastard but one hour after removing it I voided 300cc and they told me that's the most anyone has ever done. One hour later I was on my way home. There's a little burning sensation during urination and I was sore for a few days but no problems to speak of. Just finished my antibiotics yesterday and today will complete the pyridium therapy. I take Metamucil every day anyway so no problems with this bodily function. I can tell you sex isn't on the radar for a month or more because I just know that things have got to heal before this event. I am very physically active and not overweight. I'm in excellent health otherwise. Anyway, one week post-op and that's my story. I'm going to mow the yard this afternoon (yes, push mower) and then do a light workout before beers and dinner.
I had the surgery 15 days ago, Pain of urinating ain't so bad now, and the bleeding has seemed to stop, but the urgency is still bad, but my doctor said I could suffer with urgency for another couple of months.
I started to notice something wrong in my early twenties and I went to doctor after doctor, well I have suffered horribly for over twenty years.
I had slow urination, my guts hurt like Hell, I went all the damn time and it felt like my penis was a plugged up nose with a clamp on it and yes I felt rotten for over twenty years.......
Sex was so miserable that I avoided it, hardly nothing came out and it felt like the majority was forced into my bladder and it hurt for several days afterwords.
Well I still have some spasms and the penis is still sore after urinating, but everything seems to be getting better, but I guess time will tell.
I did not have a large prostate but strictures, even though the scope didn't reveal it, the doctor used the laser to trim the prostate.
I urinate so much better and my gut and penis feel great I am so concerned about sex.....................
Since the surgery I had a couple of erotic dreams and I did not have any physical reaction, which has never been the case before, but the doctor said after the surgery there would be a decrease in seamen or none at all, well obviously it is none at all!
I feel cheated! I had very little sex in my life due to the pain and I am only 46 years old now and now I know there will be no enjoyment of sex for the rest of my life, sure I can still get erect but that is not enough to even bother, I sometimes wish the doctor would have left me impotent and unable to get erect and I know one day I will want to jerk off or have sex and when I don't cum I will be devastated.
However, when I consider how I felt for over twenty years and considered suicide many times and how I feel now, I know I made the right choice. I was so miserable I quit many jobs cause of how I felt, I pray I can find a job as I now feel better than I can remember and I have been jobless about a year and a half.
I have a bad work history and as much as I suffered I out preformed almost everyone in every job I ever had.

I had the PVP Green light treatment a year ago last week. I have had a lot of concerns like i am reading here, but for the most part i have been satisfied with the results. No urgency now but had for a month or so after laser treatment had the penis pain and its passed. no sexual side effects not even the retrograde ejaculation. The only problem i do have is intermittent bleeding. Not for long periods or severe but every couple of weeks to a month i see blood in my urine as ithe stream starts then it turns yellow. The next urination is usually normal but with a few small clots. My Urologist scoped me and everything looks fine and says its not abnormal for the prostate to relieve scarring even this far after surgery. I have suffered Prostatitis frequently before the surgery and it could still be recurring it doesnt go away after the surgery. I am concerned and wonder if anyone else has this experience so long after the laser treatment.

I am considering the PVP Green Light laser surgery. Has anyone had it done in the Boston area? Where do you recommend? Has anyone had experience with Dr. Graeme S. Steele from Brigham & Women's Hospital? Thank you. [/img]
what can you tell me of your progress now? have you improved significant;y? I had he surgery 2 months ago and am not sure if I am improving as I should. I wake up three times per night to go to the bathroom, and during the day if I drink enough water I need to go every 20 minutes or less. If I don't drink enough water then I go every hour or so but have spasms every time and the flow is minimal. I run 5 miles everyday and find it very uncomfortable since I feel the need to stop to pee every 10 minutes or so. There is been a couple of times I don't make it to the bathroom at all!
My Urologist is recommending this procedure to me. From reading all these comments, I'm wondering ------- I've had a catheter for going on two months and he says that Avodart probably wont work for me. I will of course go for a second opinion.
