I had the HOLEP procedure done at the University Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT 3 weeks ago tomorrow.  I was out of the hospital the next morning.  I was incontinent for a couple of days.  My urine stream was and is awesome--very little bleeding.  Slight bleeding for about a week and very little discomfort.  From the begining I took no pain meds.  After two weeks only slightly incontinent that is controlable with a little toilet paper, plastic wrap and a rubber band not too tight of course--just to keep the dribbles off my pants.  I had normal errections  from the day after surgery.  Last night, 19 days after the procedure, I had sex with my wife.  She loved it, so did I.  No mess for her due to retrograde ejaculation.  It did feel a little weird but very pleasurable.

I just had Green Light Surgery 14 days ago. My dr did TURP and his partner did Green Light. I chose the Green Light and glad I did. I felt good 1 day after the procedure. I heard the TURP is more difficult. Longer recooperation and longer use of catherder.

Obviously, this isn't current, but I do question that a TURP is necessarily good for 30 years. Mine lasted 5. I am now scheduled for a GL procedure at Mayo Clinic. They also do the HoLEP procedure. They do virtually no TURPs any more because of the high complication rate (3-5%) vs less than 1% for GL.

It is definitely not the type of procedure you get that primarily influences the outcome of any operation...it is the experience and skill of the surgeon. Mayo in Rochester does 200-300 a year. They actually pioneered the procedure and have contributed greatly to the refining of the procedure over the years.

Even though GL has a fairly short learning curve compared with say, the HoLEP which Mayo also pioneered. They reserve the HoLEP for those with fairly large prostates and claim the GL works just as well with fewer side effects than the HoLEP.

I had this surgery on October 2013 and I had the same problem urinating. I didn't bleed much. I kept my Flomax and took a pill every two days until I didn't need them anymore. My doctor wouldn't prescribe anymore Flomax. This is now March and I use the bathroom once every four hours. I still get up once at night to use the bathroom, but I am improving every day. If he is still having problems, he should continue to visit his doctor until he is satisfied and can urinate with less problems than he has now.

Thanks for your post and reassurance. I had GL surgery 2 days ago and I am suffering the same symptoms you had after your surgery. I feel like I'm peeing up against a partial blockage. I have to push to get started with a weak stream and then stopping and then pushing to get it started again. I'm not showing any blood but lots of urgency. I just got a hold of my very kind urologist and he is going to check me out with his portable ultrasound. Perhaps, like you, I just need to be patient

I'm 56 and had greenlight done last week and I'm also doing really good. These testimonials are discouraging and I feel for you guys. Still early in my recovery but everything is going as my doctor predicted.

I swapped last minute from the TURP to the green light and so glad I did. I had all the cronic enlarged prostate problems. I walked out of the hospital 24hrs later a new man. I discussed with the doctor that the retrograde ejaculation was a major concern, he then told me he had a proceedure that he has only tried twice with very positive results and I told him thats what i wanted. 28 hrs after the surgery I did a load of washing, mowed the lawn, shopped for dinner, cleaned the pool and cooked for 4. I am still peeing like a teenager, no pain whatsoever and ejaculating huge volumes, my lady cant believe it. The urgency and frequency is gone and I empty my bladder in seconds. the operation has changed my life. I am so glad I picked the doctor I did

semen is directed by a seminal flap that is destroyed when you have TURP thereby creating the retrograde ejaculation.

Had GL treatment for BPH 2 weeks ago. Everything seem gone well so far. Had catheter for 2 days. Urine flow is strong. THe only thing that worry me a bit now is the small amount of blood in the urine. I thought GL would have minimal bleeding but I am still bleed a bit after 2 weeks. For those who had this treatment, how long did it take the bleeding completely stop? From what I read, bleeding could be last for few weeks for some people.

Hi all, im 45 and I had my laser surgery 12 days ago. I'm still bleeding and passing pieces of something, maybe clots. Also, when urinating it starts with good pressure but half way its lost and I'm left with pushing by starting and stopping the flow. I have a burning feeling as I try emptying my bladder slowly one drop at a time. Does anyone know how long I would need to wait before having sex or masturbation?
