I have had this problem for about 20 years. About 4 years ago I started to have really bad vertigo problems and a full sensation in my ears. I told my ENT years ago about hearing my heartbeat when I went to bed and I was just diagnosed after many tests with Patulous Eustachian Tube
and now I find this article from 2009 saying this could be one of the reasons.
Very few ENTs at least in my area even know what PET is and I am finding from websites that there are so many people out there with the exact same symptoms. Just look from 6-7 years ago on here:

Does anyone know of a doctor who is actually helping with this issue?

Seriously, I have had the tubes in the right ear for about two weeks now. I have had zero problems since. I can ever hear better! I go back next week to see if the problem returns when the tubes are removed. If it does, they'll do a scan to see why and where the fluid behind the ear drum is coming from and won't stop. I'd rather they just leave the tubes in! I have peaceful sleep now.
While I would rather not join this club, I am now a member. I have the same symptoms of a swooshy, pulsing sound in the right ear, which gets worse when I lay down or turn my head, or lower my head (chin toward chest). It goes away when pressure is put to my artery on the neck. I went to the chiropractor a week ago and it has not helped. I am going to continue to go for a little while and see if I can see improvement. Also, I am going to try the magnesium supplements. Certainly appreciate all of the information people have posted on this topic.
I have had this same problem with pulsing in my right ear for about 3 1/2 years now. went to GP earlier and given nasal spray which didn't help. have an appointment in 2 weeks time with ENT clinic. My pulsing does not match my pulse or heartbeat. it occurs randomley and lasts for different lengths of time and it normally happens when i bend forward or when lying on that ear in bed at night. it is not painful, no dizziness just so frustrating and drives me crazy. I will let you all know how I get on at the ENT clinic and see if I get a diagnosis :-)
I have been having this same problem for 2 1/2 years. I work near a large river. One morning all was fine but I thought I could hear a pile driver out in the river somewhere, thus the beginning of my problem. I've been to 2 ENT doctors and a dentist for TMJ and now waiting to see an allergist. An MRI was taken to see about tumors - none, everything looked fine. All doctors are baffled. Said it might go away one day as unexpectedly as it arrived. I have other symtoms too. One is a pressure in the ears almost as constant. Like being in a plane and can't pop your ears. The other is the occassional sound of water behind my ear drum. When that comes it usually results in an ear infection. So I'm guessing some sort of allergy. Another is a ringing in the ears when the pressure symtoms are bad. If I press on the outer ear when this is happening, it makes the ringing higher in intensity. Was given two seperate doses of steroids when this first began with no luck. My first visit with an ENT doctor I was given a hearing test. I've always had excellent hearing. During this test they discovered a loss of hearing in the problem ear. I think I couldn't hear the high tones because they were masked by the noise of the ringing. You kind of get used to it but its always there. Can be very annoying at times. No answers yet. When they dicover the cause there'll be alot of happy customers!
An annoying pulsation has started occuring in my left ear in the past two weeks. The onset seems to be after the consumption of some alcohol ---a couple glasses of wine, or beer. The pulsation is not synchronous with heartbeat; it is almost 1.5 times faster.
1. My 1st ENT Said Similar and Opened the Ear , drained and was fine for about 3 wks and then Refilled Again
2. Went back, he Put a Tube in it and was fine for about 2 months
3. Went to Another ENT and He Took out the < what was left of the Tube and Said I had an Infection
4. He gave Me Antibioitics for 1 wk and then a 2nd Wk and all is fine
5. Went back and he said to POP My EARS 3-4x a Day
6. Been doing that for over 8 mos and all is fine
I still have Tinitus In the Other Ear.. It is worse in the Evenings
Only Fine when I Lay Down
Seen 3 ENT's and None have any Answers..All siad there is Nothing we can do for Titinus, just Deal with it
And can see Sound Therapist to sell you Expensive Hearing Aids to drowned out the Noise..
Replace it with Another Noise..
I think they are all FOS..With Millions having T, Wouldn't you Think they would have found out How it starts by Now?
Let alone how to Cure it? I just take those Ear Vitamins, Lipoflavnoid and others and Hope for the Best..
My Nephew has it since he was 5 yrs old and Just Listens to Rock Music to drowned it out..
It must be driving Him Crazy by now.. He's now 30 yrs old..
One ENT told me Can Try STEROIDS if things get really Bad..
Another wanted to Sell me a $5,000 Unit to Drowned it out..
and the VA - ENT said nothing can be done about it..
Wouldn't you think the Military would have Figured this out by Now? at least those getting T from Explosions all the time..? Shooting Guns off w/o ear Plugs, etc..?
Join tthe ATA is Nice, but I doubt they will Ever Find a Cure at this Rate.. With all the $ raised and Not Even Anything that Temp. or Permemently Stops It? It's Fruitile..We are Just DOOMED with it I guess.
I don't feel bad I got it at age 63 and Now 65, but Younger People getting it? For No Apparent Reason? Thats Terrible.. TELL YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO WEAR EAR PLUGS EVEN LISTENING TO MUSIC, MOWING THE LAWN, DOING ANYTHING NEAR ANY KNDS OF NOISE i GUESS IS THE ONLY PROTECTION..
