I been looking for answers as well. For the last few months I've been feeling these symptoms myself. My neck and throat feel heavy, thick, and I begin to feel naucious. I feel the urge to take deep breaths and yawn to get some sort of relief. My hands get clammy and spotted.
I believe this to be anxiety and stress related only because they appear at times where I feel under pressure. Thinking about it seems to intensify the problem. I scheduled an appointment with my MD tomorrow. I am going to get a full checkup on myself. I'll fill you in with the results.
For those of you with that tight feeling in your throat. I had that feeling for 9 months until I was diagnosed with Laryngopharyngeal reflux. I was put on prevacid to neutralize the acids in my stomach and also Metoclopramide to tighten up the muscle that runs from the throat to the stomach so acid would not pop up into my larynyx (voice box). I felt like I had been given a miracle. The tightness went away. The constant throat clearing stopped and I did not feel like I had to yawn or catch my breath all the time. I hope this helps someone out there who needs some relief. A barrium swallow test helped determine that my problem, was Laryngopharyngeal reflux.
I had the constant clearing of throat for several months - perhaps about 9 months. It was almost constant - mainly when stressed. But in my case, I have SOMETHING - haven't figured out what yet - something to do with adrenal glands, autonomic neuropathy, etc. THe main thing I wanted to let everyone know - DON'T BLINDLY TRUST DOCTORS!!! If you have a test and you get a sheet saying your test was "normal" - DEMAND the actual NUMBERS. Normal isn't normal for everyone. Discuss the numbers with the doctor - or find a doctor who WILL discuss the tests with you.

If you go to see a doctor who looks at you and says s/he cannot help you - you need to see a ???whatever - DON'T PAY THE DOCTOR! I know that seems like heresey - but WHY should you pay for something you n ever received.

Look for a doctor who WILL give you time and who will discuss your problem - with interest! - one who will look at articles from the internet - wherever. They are out there. If they are unwilling to do this - they are NOT a doctor you want to waste your time on. And if you find a doctor who actually does you harm, don't be afraid to report them to the state Medical Board.

Regarding the throat - it really could be stress. My daughter has/had it. She found that an antidepressant helped her. And she worked with a doctor who actually took the time to try different things. Frankly I like female doctors - NOT ALL. But I have found they are more willing to work with you.

Important to remember: In order for a doctor to practice medicine, they MUST generalize - or they couldn't practice. However, when they start dealing with you, they are dealing with a specific.

If you haven't seen a doctor like this - FIND ONE!
I had this similar feeling, and it ended up being TMJ. I was clenching my teeth through out the night and causing the muscles in my neck under my chin and through my lower jaw to tighten.

Maybe that is the problem.

TMJD (Tempromandibular Joint Dsyfunction) can have varying symptoms and I definitely think people should ask their doctors about it, as it is often misdiagnosed as something else. I'm an OT (occupational therapy) student and just learned about this today in class actually... Put your finger in front of your ear above the earlobe, then move your jaw around. That joint you can feel moving is your TMJ. Look up the symptoms to compare yours.

I have suffered from these same symptoms for the past three years!! It's been getting worse recently, especially the throat tightness. I have difficulty getting a full breath, and I start yawning a lot. No ear problems though, as some have reported. I have had a very stressful past three years so I thought perhaps it was due to stress. I do feel anxious, but so does everyone else in the OT program here! I am hesitant to think I need anti-anxiety meds. Posture could play into this as well, as bad posture can affect many things that lead to problems. I used to grind my teeth (bruxism) when I was kid... In the past three years I had a CAT scan, X-Rays, blood work... Tried Advair for asthma, allergy meds....nothing works! I am relieved I'm not the only one having these annoying symptoms.

I think TMJD should be looked into as a possibility for sure. I no longer have health insurance, so my options are limited. If anyone has any luck with the TMJD, or anything else for that matter, let me know!!!
TMJ caused my throat/neck tightness/pressure; sore teeth; trouble breathing. I was just diagnosed because I thought I had an ear infection. Apparently TMJ is very common especially in women and although it can be caused by teeth grinding it can also just be stress related especially if you clench your jaw a lot. Everything from the neck up gets affected!! I thought it was just allergies for months. Talk to an ear, nose, throat specialist or your dentist. For relief, ice your jaw for 15 minutes and heat your neck as well. Massaging your neck helps and so does aleve with inflammation. If you have a chiropractor, go and get your jaw adjusted. He has helped immensely!!! Good luck. www.TMJ.org Check it out!!
I have not seen any of you say that your "blood pressure" was checked.

I have high blood pressure....when mine goes up, my
neck feels very thick and my heart pounds.

I must also say, I am that type of person that does not get
stressed when I go to a doctors office and my bp is always
"normal" when i see the doc.

Try getting a bp machine and take your bp at home.
Take it several times over a week...right when you wake
up in the morning before doing anything.
You will get your true bp then.

[Not a wrist bp machine....those are junk. ]

They missed out on my bp when I was getting dizzy spells.
They told me I had a brain tumor....when thru tons of tests.

Noone ever checked my blood pressure!!
I can sympathize. Been having the 'thick' throat feeling for a while now. Although I did not go to doctor school I have determined that mine is stress related. Why you ask? Well, when I take xanax or 1/2 of an ambien then I relax and bammmm... no more thick throat. Interestingly, as the medication wears off...thick throat returns. I began documenting when TT (thick throat) is worst. It's when I'm most stressed/frustrated/etc. Granted, I'm not a doctor, but in my case it seems that stress is the cause. Reading about stress explains why our body responds as it does. Just because we are stressed and perhaps take anxiety meds does not mean we are 'crazy'. This simply means our environment is not conducive to our mental/emotional well being. I've been speaking with a 'doctor' recently in order to help me learn strategies to prioritize what is worth stressing over and how to change how I see things. It's a hard lesson but nothing is worth losing your health for. We can't control people or situaitons...only our response. Hope this helps you all.
I sometimes randomly feel like my neck is so heavy and thick...I feel no pain associated with it but i feel a pressure being applied which makes me feel tired like i will fall asleep or faint from suffocating...My lungs are fine and i can breathe in and out normally but the neck symptoms lead to all sorts of other feelings as well as dizziness and general weakness...
My eyes start to feel tingly too in the back and they feel heavy and tired and my head feels like there's a pressure being applied to it too. This is all associated with the heavy neck!!!
Please don't blow off the referral to the psychiatrist! They can help so much and you don't have to be suicidal to benefit from their assistance. Seeking behavioral health services does not make you a freak. There is a horrible stigma out there against mental illness. It is just like any other illness, usually a chemical imbalance which can be helped by medication. Wouldn't you take insulin if you were a diabetic, thyroid if you had hypothyroidism?

It makes me so sad that due to the negative stigma vs. mental illness, so many people won't seek treatment.
