Hello! I need advice, because something strange is happening to me. For the past two months I am smelling smoke all the time. I keep on asking people around me if they smell it too, but the answer is no. I smell it everywhere/ in gym, in office, at home… Does anyone have any advice what this might be?

Go see a ENT you might be developing nasal polyps which i have suffered over the years. Three years ago I had this and it has reoccured again because my nasal polyps are back and like you I smell cigarette smoke/dirty ash tray call what you want its not pleasant and at times i can actually taste it and make me gag.

I can also smell smoke, usually it wakes me up in the night.   I was told that we have a ghost and brought in the ghost buster who said not.   The smell keeps coming and keeps waking me up.   The good news is that my partner can also smell it when I wake him up, so I am not mad!! As with some of you the smell isnt outside and is stronger in my bedroom.  I have guest room and if it gets really bad I sleep in there and dont smell the smoke..........so what is it. I have been wondering of late if its got something to do with the Icelandic volcano.........Any thoughts.   I absolutely hate smoking, so would be glad to rid of it????? I find it difficult to believe we all have brain tumours and I havent been ill..  This has been going on for over a year now.

Aspartame, very interesting, I gave up smoking 9 months ago but I'm still using nicotine lozenges which contain...aspartame! I too experience this disgusting smell of old cigarette smoke but it's only recently started for some reason. Now apparently aspartame has been linked to brain tumours but I believe the smell is caused by the aspartame as I've only been using the lozenges for just under a year. Also when I first started using the lozenges it affected my nose, specifically it made me sniff constantly and showed a little blood if I used a tissue. The only other thing to check for in your house could be black mould but I think we've found our culprit.
To update on my post, it seems that I am not the only one in my area to smell the cigarette smoke aroma. The local Gas supplier is requesting any information as they believe it is a gas leak and are trying to pinpoint the area is has been noticed in. This was reported in the local rag and a website called streetlife. Thanks for all your comments x
I feel like I am losing my mind...I've been smelling smoke everywhere I go and everywhere I am for the last week...it's not cigarette smoke but like of burning wood...I've always prided myself on good smells throughout my home and now I smell nothing but smoke and cannot smell any other fragrances and I don't know what to do...I hate this and I cannot live my whole life like this! How to make it go away?!
I get the strong smell after being around a lot of constant smoke. I went to a casino and was overwhelmed with the smell. It has been 5 days and I still can't get it out of my nose. It happened once before and cleared up on its own. I hope it stops soon this time. I am getting sick of the constant smell and have had a sinus headache. That will teach me to stay out of unhealthy environments.
i found this thread and I, too, smell smoke all the time!! I thought I was nuts! I smell it at home, at work, in my car...I am not a smoker and no one in my home smokes either. I read things about this sensation being linked to possible seizure disorders, tumors, and other ailments. Has anyone actually had a good answer from a doctor...I'm beginning to wonder if I should go myself!! i will be watching for new additions to this thread!! Beck
I also am dealing with this disorder and am at wits end. Just saw an ENT a week ago and he has started me on Flonase (first step) NO relief....go back in 2 weeks and he will have to run tests.....so frustrated. Headaches are starting and nobody seems to understand how awful this really is. Even doing research on the internet is very limited.....just pray every night when I wake up it will be GONE!
Have you found any relief...I too just started smelling phantom cigarette smoke 3 months ago. Have seen ENT and he has started me on Flonase (first step in trying to help me) I am so frustrated by this....only time I am "smoke free" is morning. At this point I am desperate for answers.......
I am in the exploration mode of trying to get to the bottom of why it's happening to me, too. It started a little over a month ago, and went on for about a week, then went away. I did saline nasal rinses and ran a humidifier all through the night in my bedroom. Now about 4wks later, it's back. My observations: 1) I developed an unusual nasty cold shortly after the first episode--this cold is still with me, went deep down into my chest (which is a first for me) and I've been playing hell trying to get rid of it; and 2) it begins at my office where I work, and then it follows me everywhere--I taste it, my eyes burn, and the smell is gagging, I have asked my coworkers if they smell anything--No. I ask people wherever I go and the answer is always, No. I saw my allergy specialist, he went for the sinus rinses and Flonase--Flonase does nothing for me, but the rinses provide temporary relief. I'll be turning up my humidifier tonight to full blast to see if it helps. If it does, I'll report back in.
I am new to this site and just came across your post. I started to smell cigarettes back in August and no one in my household smokes. It started while we were on vacation and we were in a condo where smoking was prohibited. Went to my Dr. and she referred me to an ENT. First step was to put me on Flonase to see if that helped...after almost a month with no progress he did a CT scan of the sinuses. Just got the results last week and he found a cyst on the left side of my cheek (rather big) leading into the nasal cavity. Since he doesn't know that mush about it and if it could be somehow affecting the olfactory nerve I am off to see a neurologist Jan 19th. I am hoping that he can give me answers and that it could possibly be the cyst that is causing this awful smell. At least it is a start.....will keep you posted. there is a wonderful support group on FB if you are interested. Just search Phantosmia......this site is ok but nobody ever seems to repost and these are posts from over a year ago.....
I too have had this issue. I tried many of the same things most have posted including two separate and different antibiotics, all tempoary relief. My doctor lastly prescribed Fluticasone Propionate, 50MCG, a nasal spray used twice daily. Within a week the smell was gone. I used for two weeks as per his recommendation.
