Kidney Stone Info/Tricks from a guy who's passed more than 200!

I looked through some of these posts and I see that a lot of people have kidney stone issues and have been, or are going through many of the situatios that I have. I have become a sefl-taught expert on kidney stones since I have passed over 200 in my lifetime. I have a congenital kidney disease called Medullary Sponge Kidney Disease and it causes me to make stones like most people grow fingernails.
When you pass that many stones, you get to know your body and tricks to make things less painful so I thought I'd come and tell of some experiences that might help others. In addition to passing more than 200, I've also been through 7 Lythotrypsies so I know all that as well.
I passed my first stone when I was 20. Typical severe pain in my left flank area, like a knife pushed deep and twisting. That lasted several hours and landed me in the E.R. It took me 3 weeks to pass that stone but I finally did. The pain is typically the most instense pain a man will ever go through. The way I know it's a stone is that no amount of re-positioning makes that pain better. It stays the same incredible intensity throughout the experience. For those who are not familiar with stones, the pain is caused when the stone is pushed down the ureters on the way to the bladded. Generally, you will pass a lot of blood the first few times this happens. Not usually bright red blood but very dark rust colored. I actually passed blood the day before the pain. Didn't know, at that time, what was going on but learned quick.
Over the years, I have so much scar tissue built up inside my ureters that I no longer pass any visible blood and seldom feel the stone passing down the ureters. I have even passed 8mm stones and never knew which side it came down because it didn't hurt. But that was after the first 50 or so.
I also know WHERE in the ureter the stone is by the type and location of pain. I know a stone is right near the opening to the bladder because I get this very regular spasm, about every second or so, but the pain is felt in the tip of the penis, as if the stone is actually stuck about 1/2 inch inside the urethra. But higher up the ureter the stone is, the deeper I feel the pain in my penis, ie: If the stone is 1" from the bladder, that spasming is about 1 & 1/2 inches from the tip of my penis. This is when I know I have to push a ton of water.
I generally know when the stone passes into the bladder as I get one more very intense sharp spasm... the kind that make you scream "OUCH"! Then I get ready for the next step... passing it through my penis. This is less painful than it sounds but always shocks the sh!t out of me, excuse my french. It almost always goes like this... I start peeing, and right near the end I feel the stone hit the exit of the bladder. I generally don't get the stone out then. Often it literally gets stuck in my urethra which is really painful and is noted by a sharp pain in that area when bending forward. Then I do this trick... I drink lots of water, wait until my bladder is really full and hit the bathroom. I then hold the very tip of my penis tightly so that no pee can come out. I release the stream, causing my urethra to expand (like in the cartoons when someone plugs a fire hose and a big bubble grows near the end), then I release my grip. This cause a huge, fast stream and generally pushes the trapped stone out. Often, I have to keep squeezing off the penis, over and over again while trying to keep urinating, eventually, I pass the stone. In cases where the stone is particularily large or difficult, I will fill the tub with very warm water, get in and get down on all fours, reaching back to perform the same squeezing technique. This allows you to pee underwater and point the penis straight down, an aid to getting it out of the lowest point in the bladder. Yes, I end up sitting in a bathtub full of water (and my own pee) but it works. I find a huge stone in the bottom of the tub. Then I simply shower.
Because I form stones so fast, they are generally very jagged, like quartz crystals with spikes on the ends. Stones that spend years froming are generally more round and easier to pass. But often, my stones don't show up on xray because they from so fast, they are not dense and therefore, not radio-opaque. This oftens causes me issues as new doctors think I'm faking a stone.
Another trick I use is when I have a stone stuck in my ureter for weeks or months. I go to the E.R. and have them hook me up to a normal sailine I.V. and push it wide open. This moves so much fluid through my kidneys that the stone often moves to the bladder with 2 hours. But this is not recommended for men over 50 as having that much fluid in your boday can cause a heart attack. Basically, you are simulating Congestive Heart Failure by having so much fluid going through your bloodstream. I haven't done the IV thing since I turned 50.
As to what causes my stones, they are almost always calcium-oxylate, the typical type. Drinking colas is the number one way people get these stones. But eating nuts is also not a good idea. Many people say coffee is bad (tea is very high in oxylates) but I actually drink only coffee for the past 5 years and have greatly reduced my stone issues. I do drink lots of coffee and some water too so I think the hydration alone is what's working. I spent 2 years drinking 2 bears a day... never created a stone in 2 years. But I couldn't keep my beer gut from forming. Beer is a great diuretic.
I also try to take a Flomax when I know I'm about to pass a stone. Makes it easier to release the prostate and get flow going.
These are just some of the things I've learned over the years. I hope they help someone. I came here today because I feel like I passed a stone into my bladder but have not been able to flush it out. And at least half the times I go to pee, there is nothing, no pain, no stone trying to exit the bladder near the end. This is very unusual for me. And it happened the same last month... felt I passed a stone but never did. So either I have one stuck in the bladder (which BTW happens often... the bladder is not smooth on the inside, it has lots of folds and crevices that like to hold onto stones) or I am experiencing prostate stones for the first time. I came here looking for symptoms of those as they are new to me.
Good luck to all. Drink lots of water!

I am having kidney stones from last 15 years. I might have passed 5-6 stones of various sizes renging from 3 mm to 5 mm / 6mm.My all stones passed itself except one, which I got removed for safer said. Recently I passed a stone (should be of 5 mm size) and was there in uretor from last 2 years. I took no special treatment, excpet some times took extra water that too not regularily. Whenever I ha pain, i used to take more water. Doctors tole me to take urimax for 25-20 days and asked if stone did not pass, then it should be removed. But, stone did not come out.Now it has come out on its own. I am happy. I have few experiences and observation, which I would like to share-
- If you have stone pain , get stone size checkes via ultrasound. If its 5/6 mm, keep patience and bear pain. Have ultrasound some times to see that it is not not impacting kideny size much with back presuure. Take pain killer whenever you have pain.
- Take lots of water, do walk , you can take lemon, apple juice etc. as well.
- Keep getting X-ray in 3-4 months to see position of stone, f its moving thats good.
- If you have sharp momentaily pain in penis area (lower end of penis), mean stone is in bladder now. wait and it would come out.
- while passing stone, close the tip of penis and try urintaing till you can hold, then release. Repeat this untill stone comes out.
Your stone is in bladder. It would come out soon, take lots of fluid.
I may be able to help you permanently
So when your stone gets stuck in the bladder, what do you do? Will it come out? Help!
How often would you take the mix of oil and juice?
In the "middle" of my first stone and feel like I'm going to die. It is not relenting. The stomach pain is horrible as well. I feel bad for you guys that get these frequently. This s by far the worst thing ever.
I have read some other remedies for kidney stones one of them says to use coke and asparagus. is there any other vegetable i can use to pass these stones?
I USED A VIBRATING MASSAGER
I had a 7mm x 6.5mm x 4mm prickly stone. I had it about nine years where it would go in my ureter and likely was coming back out to my kidney. Six months ago I had a CT Scan that confirmed it was now in my ureter. During these past six months I was drinking lots of water, jumping, and using a prescribed soft tissue relaxer which unfortunately gave me headaches. Then the stone got stuck near the narrow entrance to the bladder. My urologist said there is a one-way valve there so urine will not flow back from the bladder, and through that it is hard to pass stones. So after some time, I finally gave up and set up a lithotripsy surgery date. Yesterday, using the kidney stone's location from my X-ray as a guide, and after drinking lots of water and waiting for kidney discomfort (means urine is creating pressure to the kidney at the time, as the ureter does not have nerves) I applied a Handheld Vibrating Massager (HVM) to the suspect area for the first time, this as I jumped up and down, and just like that, it put the stone into my bladder as I could feel the relief. When I used the HVM I could feel its vibrations throughout my whole torso, and I am guessing it had the effect of the 70's electric football game that used vibration to move players across a metal playing table.
An hour later, on my second trip to the bathroom and from what I had read from “moovyz" original post on this thread here, I leaned forward while standing over the toilet and that flushed down the stone, I am guessing from the forward bottom of my bladder. The gush was so strong at the time that it came all the way out and fell into the bowl. It was quick but felt like a strong electric shock went through my penis, ouch.
Research backs up to some extent that vibration massage is effective at removing kidney stones. See: "Effect of vibration massage therapy after extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy in patients with lower caliceal stones". For the record, I used a "Wahl All-Body Massage Powerful Therapeutic Massager" with the suction-cup looking insert and on high. I only used it for about 2-3 minutes while jumping up and down and that was it. I picked up the massager new at CVS Pharmacy for $22 but I would guess any similar massager should do the trick.
In terms of the jumping with variations (jump and bump), I had developed variations such as 1/2 inch micro stutter jump in rapid succession (like a jackhammer), to long jumps with a sudden heel stop (can be too much jolt to my head so I would lean on my forearms over a desk so that only my bottom torso went up and down on this more-violent jump), to hula hip whips which can potentially help during a stone's "turn and plunge" into the bladder. I will never know what worked and that is why I even tried bending and twisting my torso in all directions while I jumped. I particularly tried jumping while leaning left and right, for example, as if trying to reach something up high with one hand and at the same time something very low with the other hand so as to stretch the ureter, or conversely bunch it up like a water balloon. What jump techniques may work will depend on many things such as the stone's location, direction, shape, and size, so I tried everything I could think of. I figured that if urine is backed up, the jumping can momentarily increase the urine's pressure, the stone is heavier than water, and the jolt may simply help the stone move along, or at the very least shake it a little so that urine has a better chance of getting by. But jumping in combination with the HVM is a winner in my book, 10 times over.
I want to mention the urologist said to use Ibuprofen to reduce swelling in the ureter, and I even used soft tissue relaxer Tamsulocin, but I was using neither when I gave the HVM a try and I feel it worked 10 times better than chemicals, almost instantly. I do not understand why I had not seen the HVM recommended online before, and it was just coincidence I just happened to see it at the drug store a few days back. A separate thought is that it could even help to dislodge smaller stones from the kidneys before they grow too big. I think that after giving my kidney some time to recover, I will drink a ton of water and 15-30 minutes later use the HVM over my kidney areas for a half minute or so as a way to help detach any possible additional stones that may be in there.
Now here is where it gets funny. Its been a little over 24 hours since the stone was dislodged, and all previous X-ray, CT Scan and Ultrasound tests show I had only one stone, one that looks like the one that came out. Yet I still have mild discomfort in my kidney. Hmmm. It goes away a little when I have to pee really bad. I suspect that after six month plus, my kidney was used to having urine pressure and now that the pressure is suddenly gone, its going through a 'decompression' adjustment; or, my ureter is swollen, but I think its the former.
I want to thank the original poster “movys” should he still be around, plus all the experienced and thoughtful posters here because your shares on this thread have been by far the most helpful advice I read on the entire internet. And one last funny note, I could not find this post again when using Google, but I was able to eventually find the link saved somewhere on my computer and was thereby able to come back and post my results. So if you think this was helpful, do not forget to save this page's Web link for your future reference. Best wishes to all the fellow sufferers.

As a fellow stone producer ( over 6000) I stopped counting. I have tried every trick in the book, to relieve the constant pain. I am now to the point where I pass at least a stone per day. In the beginning all these tricks worked, somewhat. The beer one was actually the one that worked best for me.
Unfortunately the scar tissue has made passing stones a whole lot more painful. Stones have a more difficult time passing and therefore get stuck, then another one comes down and well eventually I can pass 20-30 stones in one sitting (I'm female). I have had 90 surgeries due to these pesky stones. My doctor is amazed that I still have my sense of humour. lol
The point of this message, is to say Thanks!!!! It sure is nice to know that I'm not the only one.
On that note, I think it's time for a beer!!! :)
Thank you for the info! I'm almost 65 and going thru my first boiut with kidney stones. I have 10 they say. 4 on the left and six in the right. had two good attacks but, no stones has passed as far as I know.?? I am experiencing a "weird" itching in the urethra?? sometimes when I pee, sometimes afterwards?? have to ask the doc about that one! .. Thanks again....good health to you! ..Ron
what trick did u use?
what dosage of flowmax?
