Kidney Stone Info/Tricks from a guy who's passed more than 200!

I looked through some of these posts and I see that a lot of people have kidney stone issues and have been, or are going through many of the situatios that I have. I have become a sefl-taught expert on kidney stones since I have passed over 200 in my lifetime. I have a congenital kidney disease called Medullary Sponge Kidney Disease and it causes me to make stones like most people grow fingernails. When you pass that many stones, you get to know your body and tricks to make things less painful so I thought I'd come and tell of some experiences that might help others. In addition to passing more than 200, I've also been through 7 Lythotrypsies so I know all that as well. I passed my first stone when I was 20. Typical severe pain in my left flank area, like a knife pushed deep and twisting. That lasted several hours and landed me in the E.R. It took me 3 weeks to pass that stone but I finally did. The pain is typically the most instense pain a man will ever go through. The way I know it's a stone is that no amount of re-positioning makes that pain better. It stays the same incredible intensity throughout the experience. For those who are not familiar with stones, the pain is caused when the stone is pushed down the ureters on the way to the bladded. Generally, you will pass a lot of blood the first few times this happens. Not usually bright red blood but very dark rust colored. I actually passed blood the day before the pain. Didn't know, at that time, what was going on but learned quick. Over the years, I have so much scar tissue built up inside my ureters that I no longer pass any visible blood and seldom feel the stone passing down the ureters. I have even passed 8mm stones and never knew which side it came down because it didn't hurt. But that was after the first 50 or so. I also know WHERE in the ureter the stone is by the type and location of pain. I know a stone is right near the opening to the bladder because I get this very regular spasm, about every second or so, but the pain is felt in the tip of the penis, as if the stone is actually stuck about 1/2 inch inside the urethra. But higher up the ureter the stone is, the deeper I feel the pain in my penis, ie: If the stone is 1" from the bladder, that spasming is about 1 & 1/2 inches from the tip of my penis. This is when I know I have to push a ton of water. I generally know when the stone passes into the bladder as I get one more very intense sharp spasm... the kind that make you scream "OUCH"! Then I get ready for the next step... passing it through my penis. This is less painful than it sounds but always shocks the sh!t out of me, excuse my french. It almost always goes like this... I start peeing, and right near the end I feel the stone hit the exit of the bladder. I generally don't get the stone out then. Often it literally gets stuck in my urethra which is really painful and is noted by a sharp pain in that area when bending forward. Then I do this trick... I drink lots of water, wait until my bladder is really full and hit the bathroom. I then hold the very tip of my penis tightly so that no pee can come out. I release the stream, causing my urethra to expand (like in the cartoons when someone plugs a fire hose and a big bubble grows near the end), then I release my grip. This cause a huge, fast stream and generally pushes the trapped stone out. Often, I have to keep squeezing off the penis, over and over again while trying to keep urinating, eventually, I pass the stone. In cases where the stone is particularily large or difficult, I will fill the tub with very warm water, get in and get down on all fours, reaching back to perform the same squeezing technique. This allows you to pee underwater and point the penis straight down, an aid to getting it out of the lowest point in the bladder. Yes, I end up sitting in a bathtub full of water (and my own pee) but it works. I find a huge stone in the bottom of the tub. Then I simply shower. Because I form stones so fast, they are generally very jagged, like quartz crystals with spikes on the ends. Stones that spend years froming are generally more round and easier to pass. But often, my stones don't show up on xray because they from so fast, they are not dense and therefore, not radio-opaque. This oftens causes me issues as new doctors think I'm faking a stone. Another trick I use is when I have a stone stuck in my ureter for weeks or months. I go to the E.R. and have them hook me up to a normal sailine I.V. and push it wide open. This moves so much fluid through my kidneys that the stone often moves to the bladder with 2 hours. But this is not recommended for men over 50 as having that much fluid in your boday can cause a heart attack. Basically, you are simulating Congestive Heart Failure by having so much fluid going through your bloodstream. I haven't done the IV thing since I turned 50. As to what causes my stones, they are almost always calcium-oxylate, the typical type. Drinking colas is the number one way people get these stones. But eating nuts is also not a good idea. Many people say coffee is bad (tea is very high in oxylates) but I actually drink only coffee for the past 5 years and have greatly reduced my stone issues. I do drink lots of coffee and some water too so I think the hydration alone is what's working. I spent 2 years drinking 2 bears a day... never created a stone in 2 years. But I couldn't keep my beer gut from forming. Beer is a great diuretic. I also try to take a Flomax when I know I'm about to pass a stone. Makes it easier to release the prostate and get flow going. These are just some of the things I've learned over the years. I hope they help someone. I came here today because I feel like I passed a stone into my bladder but have not been able to flush it out. And at least half the times I go to pee, there is nothing, no pain, no stone trying to exit the bladder near the end. This is very unusual for me. And it happened the same last month... felt I passed a stone but never did. So either I have one stuck in the bladder (which BTW happens often... the bladder is not smooth on the inside, it has lots of folds and crevices that like to hold onto stones) or I am experiencing prostate stones for the first time. I came here looking for symptoms of those as they are new to me. Good luck to all. Drink lots of water!

hi, Your story was just the story i was looking for. I had a kidney stone in my right kidney which was 5 mm. I could feel the stone move down by ureter and the "ouch" when it dropped inside my bladder. It was 8 years ago. Now i have a stone 11mmX7mm in my left kidney and is currently being passed down the ureter. my ct scan was 4 days ago and it was located at 4.4 cm from the kidney. In the past 4 days I have felt the stone move down my uereter. A few hours ago, i have felt it move towards the groin. Then, I found your story and followed your instructions and have been drinking gallons of water. I think my stone has just moved to my bladder a few mins ago, but it is not coming down my urethra as of now. Im still drinking water andpeeing every 10 mins. I hope it passes out tonight. I will write back and share. Thanks for the article. Everybody thought i was imagining the whole process. It feels nice to know someone who knows his body the way I do.
Good luck. I've got one brewing in my left kidney today. Here comes the water!
I have 5mm stone at uv joint.  Based on your experience is worst over?
See if my situation is the same here or a little different.  I went into the E.R. on thursday night at 100 pm when the pain was too intense to handle (yes, my first one that has hurt like this).  My lower left abdomen was twisting and hurting soooo bad, and the ct tech told me it was huge but on my left side.  The Dr. came in and said no big deal, only 1mm and I'll pass it that night.  I had no appetite for 3 days and was on percosets so it was tolerable of course.  By the way the pain was so intense I was puking and what not.  well, yesterday (sunday) I started to get appetite back and ate and the pain has remained consistent but tolerable in my back left flank.  It is monday now, I still feel it in the same place, left flank back just below my ribs.  I would have thought that the intense pain was it moving down the ureter, or is it stuck maybe?  It had burned right at the end of peeing for the last two days but upon pounding water with lemon (since day one and even before) and what not, the burning has stopped and I pee regularly.  I am trying the 2 glasses of water followed by a beer theory as I write this.  Thanks for any insight and sorry for the squeamish typing!
That was 11;00 pm
Lovely info! I am female and I passed my first stone at the age of 23, which I named after my ex husband- it was a bouncing jagged 6mm calcium olalate stone. Awwww. Kidney stones run rampant in my father's side of the family plaguing most of my cousins and uncles and my father as well. Growing up I experienced my father having stones, so the minute I had one I knew it right away. In my 20's they came with regularity, one small one (under 3mm) a month, a medium one every 3-4 and a nice large one (7mm+) annually. This was blowing my mind as to why so sudden and so often. Now, I have a small one every 6+ months. I've not had a large one in over 2 years. I changed my diet is all- and not what you would expect or what the doctor's recommend. I've heard over and over again that dairy is right out and that caffeine is out too. I was told to give up soda, milk, chocolate, and coffee- wasn't happening. So I researched my stones myself and made myself a guinea pig for my own curiosity. Reading up on my calcium oxalate stones, I read how oxalates bind with calcuim in the digestive dract (stomach and intestines). My stones are more oxalate looking (which means they look like crystals rather than gritty- which is calcuim heavy). This blew my mind. Oxalate imabalace is what my conclusion was. I then experimented with my diet. The only thing I cut out was processed foods- all of them. If I want to make something, I make it from scratch. I make it with whole ingredients in their most natural form. I eat nuts, I eat spinach, I eat cheese, milk, etc. I buy local and organic as much as possible and my meat is grain free/pasture raised. Being Taoist it made sense that my stones were from imbalance- so any imbalance needed to be straightened out.. I grew to listen to my own body and the needs it has and knowing what I'm eating to balance out my oxalates. I eat a plant and dairy heavy diet surprisingly and drink my coffee (I'm an ogre without). When I have dark leafy greens I usually make effort to have diary that day with it or immediately after. Saag Paneer is an indian dish of spinach that is the most delicious dish ever in my opinion, but my husband dubs it as the kidney stone elixir for myself because I'm guaranteed to have a stone 3 days after eating saag unless I balance it out. I make sure to have extra milk when I have it. We don't have excessive dairy here- the two of us will go through a half gallon of milk a week, but that milk also is non-homogenized, grass fed, low temp pasteurized milk. The same goes if I have a very dairy heavy day- if we go crazy with the cheese or cream (or a cream based cheese soup) I make sure to have plenty of oxalate heavy foods- raspberries, spinach, strawberries, etc. I need to balance it while it is still in the gut and not in the blood. I also stay away from rhubarb- the most oxalate heavy food. Of course, this sounds wild and a lot to process, but in all reality, I don't even think about it anymore and I just naturally cook/eat this way. I came across this because my husband, after being ill for the last two weeks with a stomach virus which left him dehydrated, has come down with his own joyous kidney stone (5mm too!). I was looking for ways for him to pass them and I came across your page. Awesome advice!
Hello, I'm from Mexico, male, 30 years old, today I just passed my first kidney stone. 3 weeks ago I felt a pain in my left flank and abdomen, it lasted for 1 hour but it wasn't too painful, I started walking around my room because I couldn't find any position to stay, then I was ready to go to the doctor but the pain stopped, and it wasn't as painful as most of the stories I've heard about kidney stones so I thought it wasn't a kidney stone after all. Next day my mom brought me some tea and pills made of several plants and told me to drink them before eating, she told me that since they are natural it wouldn't hurt me in case I didn't have any kidney stones or infections or another kidney problem. Also I started drinking pineapple juice every day after that. So for 3 weeks I drank the tea and took the pills and the pineapple juice, during those 3 weeks I didn't have any pain, maybe some lower back pain but too soft that maybe was a muscular problem for the bad postures when I'm sitting. Finally yesterday when I was urinating, my urine flow stopped for less than a second and then continued but it caused a pain at the tip of my penis. At this point I wasn't thinking of a kidney stone because I never had any other pain so I thought that maybe the sudden stopping of my urine flow caused me some kind of irritation because I could feel the pain by touching the tip of my penis, during the next hours I only felt a little pain at the tip of my penis while urinating and by any kind of contact with my penis (with my boxers per example), but today I was urinating and I noticed that the flow was going to stop again, but it gain force again and the flow went normal, then I look surprised that a little stone was inside the toilet, its length is almost 6mm with sharped edges, so... it was a stone after all. So right now I'm thinking that the stone maybe was stuck at the tip of my penis during the last 24 hrs. I got to say that all the process, since the pain in my left flank 3 weeks ago and the pain at the tip of my penis, wasn't as bad as friends or relatives have told me about kidney stones, I didn't visit the doctor or took any pain medication. Maybe it was the tea and the pills and the pineapple or maybe I was too lucky. I drank water but never too much, just as any other person would do, on the other hand I did stop drinking soda (coke, pepsi, etc) during the last 3 weeks and I'm thinking never to drink them again, I don't know if those drinks were the cause of the stone but I know they are bad anyway. And as a last thing, I've been drinking lemonade for the last week, so maybe that helped too.
Michael's Kidney Factors or Swanson's chanca piedra definitely work. My stones are sand sized and average about 8-10 every other day. What is strange is that since I started taking supplements I have passed 100 and am closing in on 200 in one and a half months. I recently ordered chanca piedra from ebay to make tea. I recommend supplements highly as I have discovered they work. No pain, needles, or machines. I hope the kidneys recover. I am 60 and need my sodas, nuts, and spinach.
Wow....and you haven't shot yourself yet, just kidding of course. I'm a 72 year old ex-military guy. Had a bad stone, needed surgery, some 40 years ago. About five years ago an xray picked one up, but I passed it. Now, in the last month I have passed four, about a 1/4" in size and some little guys. I guess I need to start drinking more. Your article was helpful. Keep drinking the beer.......ha, ha
Of all the old wives tales I have yet to find or has science found and published anything that will desolve a stone. For those of us that have these babies we wish they could be desolved.Lots of water daily is probably the first and best thing to practice, diets can be adjusted if your will power is strong enough to skip the dairy products and nuts.Stones are a hassle as a lot of us know and nothing kills the pain until passed that I have found.Very hot showers gives a few minutes breathing relief when one is on the move.I for one am tired of the hospital visits for removals but if you make 'em--you gotta treat 'em..
I am working on my first kidney stone and am wondering if, after the stone passes into the bladder, you still have kidney pain...flank pain? The knife twisting feeling is gone, but my flank still hurts like crazy and my stomach feels completely torn up (although, that could be from all the meds....I usually take no medication and have birthed six babies, but I couldn't handle this little stone!). Anyway, could it be that the stone is still in there, or is the residual discomfort normal, or should I be looking at other causes for the flank pain? Thanks, this site has been helpful.
iit means creat pressure by drinking water and then hold for a moment and finaly pee it ,the flow of urine pressure will release stones,is this the msg which im gona apply now.
wat r the names of pills and tea .plz tell us.
Dear OP, Thank the lord I stumbled upon this post. Tried your 'Hold the tip closed and build up pressure, then release' method. It truly was Instant relief. I have no idea how many more days that pain would have lasted but its certainly gone now. Again, thank you very much. You are truly an insightful wizz-ard.
Very helpful. But when you say you drank 2 bears.....what kind of bears. I think if a bear turned round while I was trying to drink him, that WOULD help me pass a stone :)
