Kidney Stone Info/Tricks from a guy who's passed more than 200!

I looked through some of these posts and I see that a lot of people have kidney stone issues and have been, or are going through many of the situatios that I have. I have become a sefl-taught expert on kidney stones since I have passed over 200 in my lifetime. I have a congenital kidney disease called Medullary Sponge Kidney Disease and it causes me to make stones like most people grow fingernails.
When you pass that many stones, you get to know your body and tricks to make things less painful so I thought I'd come and tell of some experiences that might help others. In addition to passing more than 200, I've also been through 7 Lythotrypsies so I know all that as well.
I passed my first stone when I was 20. Typical severe pain in my left flank area, like a knife pushed deep and twisting. That lasted several hours and landed me in the E.R. It took me 3 weeks to pass that stone but I finally did. The pain is typically the most instense pain a man will ever go through. The way I know it's a stone is that no amount of re-positioning makes that pain better. It stays the same incredible intensity throughout the experience. For those who are not familiar with stones, the pain is caused when the stone is pushed down the ureters on the way to the bladded. Generally, you will pass a lot of blood the first few times this happens. Not usually bright red blood but very dark rust colored. I actually passed blood the day before the pain. Didn't know, at that time, what was going on but learned quick.
Over the years, I have so much scar tissue built up inside my ureters that I no longer pass any visible blood and seldom feel the stone passing down the ureters. I have even passed 8mm stones and never knew which side it came down because it didn't hurt. But that was after the first 50 or so.
I also know WHERE in the ureter the stone is by the type and location of pain. I know a stone is right near the opening to the bladder because I get this very regular spasm, about every second or so, but the pain is felt in the tip of the penis, as if the stone is actually stuck about 1/2 inch inside the urethra. But higher up the ureter the stone is, the deeper I feel the pain in my penis, ie: If the stone is 1" from the bladder, that spasming is about 1 & 1/2 inches from the tip of my penis. This is when I know I have to push a ton of water.
I generally know when the stone passes into the bladder as I get one more very intense sharp spasm... the kind that make you scream "OUCH"! Then I get ready for the next step... passing it through my penis. This is less painful than it sounds but always shocks the sh!t out of me, excuse my french. It almost always goes like this... I start peeing, and right near the end I feel the stone hit the exit of the bladder. I generally don't get the stone out then. Often it literally gets stuck in my urethra which is really painful and is noted by a sharp pain in that area when bending forward. Then I do this trick... I drink lots of water, wait until my bladder is really full and hit the bathroom. I then hold the very tip of my penis tightly so that no pee can come out. I release the stream, causing my urethra to expand (like in the cartoons when someone plugs a fire hose and a big bubble grows near the end), then I release my grip. This cause a huge, fast stream and generally pushes the trapped stone out. Often, I have to keep squeezing off the penis, over and over again while trying to keep urinating, eventually, I pass the stone. In cases where the stone is particularily large or difficult, I will fill the tub with very warm water, get in and get down on all fours, reaching back to perform the same squeezing technique. This allows you to pee underwater and point the penis straight down, an aid to getting it out of the lowest point in the bladder. Yes, I end up sitting in a bathtub full of water (and my own pee) but it works. I find a huge stone in the bottom of the tub. Then I simply shower.
Because I form stones so fast, they are generally very jagged, like quartz crystals with spikes on the ends. Stones that spend years froming are generally more round and easier to pass. But often, my stones don't show up on xray because they from so fast, they are not dense and therefore, not radio-opaque. This oftens causes me issues as new doctors think I'm faking a stone.
Another trick I use is when I have a stone stuck in my ureter for weeks or months. I go to the E.R. and have them hook me up to a normal sailine I.V. and push it wide open. This moves so much fluid through my kidneys that the stone often moves to the bladder with 2 hours. But this is not recommended for men over 50 as having that much fluid in your boday can cause a heart attack. Basically, you are simulating Congestive Heart Failure by having so much fluid going through your bloodstream. I haven't done the IV thing since I turned 50.
As to what causes my stones, they are almost always calcium-oxylate, the typical type. Drinking colas is the number one way people get these stones. But eating nuts is also not a good idea. Many people say coffee is bad (tea is very high in oxylates) but I actually drink only coffee for the past 5 years and have greatly reduced my stone issues. I do drink lots of coffee and some water too so I think the hydration alone is what's working. I spent 2 years drinking 2 bears a day... never created a stone in 2 years. But I couldn't keep my beer gut from forming. Beer is a great diuretic.
I also try to take a Flomax when I know I'm about to pass a stone. Makes it easier to release the prostate and get flow going.
These are just some of the things I've learned over the years. I hope they help someone. I came here today because I feel like I passed a stone into my bladder but have not been able to flush it out. And at least half the times I go to pee, there is nothing, no pain, no stone trying to exit the bladder near the end. This is very unusual for me. And it happened the same last month... felt I passed a stone but never did. So either I have one stuck in the bladder (which BTW happens often... the bladder is not smooth on the inside, it has lots of folds and crevices that like to hold onto stones) or I am experiencing prostate stones for the first time. I came here looking for symptoms of those as they are new to me.
Good luck to all. Drink lots of water!

Yesterday I was yet again in agonizing pain and went back to the ER and this time before I was drugged on dilaudid I asked how big is was and they said it was 8mm , I was like holy shit. Well tonight I was in pain again , this time I am managing it by Vicodin and a heating pad . Well I got up to pee earlier and there was blood in my urine and now it stings down there . I am so terrified of passing one this big. Really scared. :((

I had my first stone when I was four. No joke. Here's what's worked for me over the years but I'm not a doctor: Drinking 2oz of olive oil, lots of fresh lemon juice, some beer and having sex.
Preventive suggestions from a non-doctor: try to keep your urine from getting too acidic by eating alkalizing foods. I've read that calcium oxalate stones form faster when you have acidic urine. You can test your urine with PH test strips. Foods like meat, white bread and processed foods are generally acidic.
I also take potassium magnesium citrate (helps prevent calcium oxalate stones). I've read that staying away from too much fluoride might also help (found in tap water and toothpaste).

Thank you for the info. In the past I have used a formula handed down over the years by my family. The cure consists of a tablespoon of fresh olive oil followed by a glass of grapefruit juice the first thing in the morning before eating and again before dinner. Works great. I passed several stones without pain.

I've had over 40 stones so far. I get them about every 4 months. Best thing I've found so far is apple cider vinegar. It smells nasty, but take a 1 oz shot. Especially effective when the stone is in the kidney trying to get to the bladder. When I take it, my pain usually goes away in about 15 minutes. I don't know why...it just works.
Hello all... 38 yr old, 22 yr history of kidney stones. Average a stone around 5mm every 1-2 yrs since I was 16. Has anyone had the misfortune of getting addicted to pain meds due to having stones so often?
I am a 42 year old male that has passed about a 100 stones and never been to the ER becasue I know I can do it on my own. But Moovyz has changed my life with his tips. The same night I read his post I was dealing with a triple header. I had passed 2 large stones at work in one shot! That was new for me. But I still felt like one was still in the bladder. By the shap of the stones at work they were oval and i know it takes some time and luck for it to pass. But now with Moovyz penis pinch trick I was able to pass the third one. I never felt such a strong flow.. It was more like shooting it out than taking a wizz. I was on flowmax also. Big thank you for this post!!
I am 47 and had my first stone in 2001 that put me in the ER and ultimately lazar scope surgery . I had another episode five years ago and couldn't afford the procedure and eventually passed a 7mm stone that was stuck at the UVJ . I have had another episode for about month and half with pain in side and alternating to the annoying head of penis pain that radiated like a faint contraction . Had one day that made me sick with pain in back . this was a week ago friday . last wed . went to Dr. had a CT scan and as I suspected a stone at the UVJ again(penis pain) annoying as hell!! This time he says its 12mm and wants to do surgery this week . well friday i decided to buy some Uricare and start taking it along with flowmax at night . This eve. after reading this thread I decided what the heck I have tried everything over the year from the bump and jump to drinking creosote tea ! why not, So after a couple more bottles of water and two beers i decided to take a shower and try the squeezed it off trick and what do you know !!!! it spit out the Stone that was exactly 12 mm by 7 mm as the DR. said . I am very thankful 1. this saved me about 3500.00!! and most importantly i now have a great sample to take and have them test so we can hopefully know how to prevent future ones . happy happy happy
It would be kinder to just delete the entire post instead of just editing out the answer.
How often do you have to drink this? I have been in pain for the last week and inspite of going to ER all I got was pills. They did the IV thing but the stone didn't come out :( I am still in pain and been taking pain killers ... Any idea on what I can do to get it out. I have no idea where the stone is unfortunately. My back is still sore but yest and today my right pelvic and above the pelvic has been painful.
WOW! SO IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS KIDNEY STONES LIKE MOST PEOPLE GET HEADACHES!!! Some how that makes me feel better... lol...
Great info from the OP and everyone else. I have had stones since i was about 10 yrs old and never new it until 5 years ago when it took 11 months to pass one damn stone; when i heard the familiar "kerplink" sound as the stone hit the toilet bowl and saw this thing resting on the bottom of the bowl I REACHED DOWN IN WITH MY BARE HAND AND PULLED THAT SUCKER OUT... I almost wanted to make into a piece of jewelry it was so big.
I had been in severe pain a dozen or more times throughout that year for 2-26 days with 75% of every hour was filled with pain in my side... The pain was not in my back like most people complain of, it was just about where the liver is but just below my ribs and the pain ran right down my right leg and into my groin where it stopped in the testicles... also had the pain go down my thigh about 8"... It was so painful I couldnt stop rolling around on my bed, shaking and shivering and holding my breath...
When i finally went to the urologist they took xrays and the stone was 11 mm long and 3-5 wide depending on where they measured on the xrays... it was cockeyed and NOT GONNA MOVE from what he said... I asked him wtf can you do to get this thing out of me? He laughed and said I was a candidate for lipotripsy but without health insurance the cost was not something I could afford to pay upfront ($5800). He gave me flomax and said to take two large lemons and squeeze juice and pulp into a mason jar and add 1/8 cup of sugar and fill with FILTERED tap water and to drink within 5 minutes.... he recommended I drink at least 3 of these things a day for a month and then come back to see him.
The stone had freed up and dropped a few inched away from the bladder.... he said it was going to be a bitch as it made its way on down to the bladder but that once that if it didnt get stuck i would be home free. It got stuck for 2 weeks and meanwhile he scheduled an extraction surgery because he didn't think it would ever move. The day of the procedure I he took xrays and it was almost at the mouth of the bladder but was so long and heavier on one end then the other that it kept jamming up... i never asked what they were going to do to extract the damn stone until this visit... he showed me the the tool they use that slides up into the urethra and took me to the room that had the chair they strap people in to prevent you from moving around during the procedure... said they grab the stone with the little claws on the end of the tool and pull the thing out... Then they go back in with this thing that stretches the urethra enough to put in a long sting that stops it from swelling shut; he warned me that the whole process would be very painful but the worst part is when they pull the stint out... I KNEW WHAT THAT FELT LIKE because i had had a UTI test or procedure done several times between ages of 8 and 15 and the doctors went up into my bladder with this tube and filled my bladder with a whole lot of fluid and then when the pressure from my bladder being so full that the fluid stopped flowing they cut the tube and put it into a container and it all come flowing back out on its own... anyways when that was done they had to pull out the tube....DAMN, THE PAIN WAS EXCRUCIATING...
So i told my urologist the UTI procedure story and told him i couldnt let him do the extraction that day and would have to reschedule for the next week. He told me to drink five lemonades every day and to hold my bladder until i couldnt any longer and then strain my urine... i did what he said and showed up to the next appt and the xrays showed it went into the bladder... which i knew because the pain changed completely... the feeling i had a red hot ball of metal in my side was gone and so was the very scary bloody urine (he said he had not seen so much blood in anyones urine in 13 years) that i had been pissing for 1/2 of the previous 10 1/2 months.... the new pain was a burning, itchy kind of pain with a relentless sensation that felt like i had drank a 12 pack of beer and needed to pee. The next day is the day i passed the damn thing. What a relief that was!
The kidney stones havent stopped since... after passing several more in the past five years (all smaller) i think i have built an amazing tolerance to the pain because i have been pissing blood for 2 months off and on but for the last week its been constant blood and severe pain... so i reckon this one is probably longer than it is wide and thats why i cant take the pain as well as i have the last 8 i passed and didnt know it until i heard the plunking of the stone hitting the toiled water and the plink they hit the bottom of bowl... ever since the 11 mm stone i have had dull achy pain on both sides but the right side more then the left with random episodes of severe stabbing pain for 20 minutes to an hour a couple times a month, so i imagine that its from constant dropping of stones...
You are right on, I am a 35 yr old female with the same exact kidney disease you have , so again get info, I currently have passed about 50 since I was 15, the doctors have never helped they say that since I have passed them in the past I can handle it. So I currently have one stuck in my urethra just started with the pain, last one I had stuck, it was there for four months, I don't want this one here that long. But things are just a little different for me to pass them than a man. Do u have any theorys on how I can get this one out. I just had gastric sleeve surgery so I can't put down alot of water in a short time, only about 1 cup an hour. Help please...
Try Stone Breaker (Chanca Piedra) from whole foods. That seems to have reduce the pain, dissolve and pass it.
Hello, my husband is processing his first stone. Today is day #8 of the stones exit journey. He has been to the ER twice as well as an urologist- who is taking the wait & see approach. Our major concern is that pain has remained in the exact same location - he is afraid the stone is "stuck". Does this seem "normal" to those of you have been through this before? Thank you in advance.
