Kidney Stone Info/Tricks from a guy who's passed more than 200!

I looked through some of these posts and I see that a lot of people have kidney stone issues and have been, or are going through many of the situatios that I have. I have become a sefl-taught expert on kidney stones since I have passed over 200 in my lifetime. I have a congenital kidney disease called Medullary Sponge Kidney Disease and it causes me to make stones like most people grow fingernails. When you pass that many stones, you get to know your body and tricks to make things less painful so I thought I'd come and tell of some experiences that might help others. In addition to passing more than 200, I've also been through 7 Lythotrypsies so I know all that as well. I passed my first stone when I was 20. Typical severe pain in my left flank area, like a knife pushed deep and twisting. That lasted several hours and landed me in the E.R. It took me 3 weeks to pass that stone but I finally did. The pain is typically the most instense pain a man will ever go through. The way I know it's a stone is that no amount of re-positioning makes that pain better. It stays the same incredible intensity throughout the experience. For those who are not familiar with stones, the pain is caused when the stone is pushed down the ureters on the way to the bladded. Generally, you will pass a lot of blood the first few times this happens. Not usually bright red blood but very dark rust colored. I actually passed blood the day before the pain. Didn't know, at that time, what was going on but learned quick. Over the years, I have so much scar tissue built up inside my ureters that I no longer pass any visible blood and seldom feel the stone passing down the ureters. I have even passed 8mm stones and never knew which side it came down because it didn't hurt. But that was after the first 50 or so. I also know WHERE in the ureter the stone is by the type and location of pain. I know a stone is right near the opening to the bladder because I get this very regular spasm, about every second or so, but the pain is felt in the tip of the penis, as if the stone is actually stuck about 1/2 inch inside the urethra. But higher up the ureter the stone is, the deeper I feel the pain in my penis, ie: If the stone is 1" from the bladder, that spasming is about 1 & 1/2 inches from the tip of my penis. This is when I know I have to push a ton of water. I generally know when the stone passes into the bladder as I get one more very intense sharp spasm... the kind that make you scream "OUCH"! Then I get ready for the next step... passing it through my penis. This is less painful than it sounds but always shocks the sh!t out of me, excuse my french. It almost always goes like this... I start peeing, and right near the end I feel the stone hit the exit of the bladder. I generally don't get the stone out then. Often it literally gets stuck in my urethra which is really painful and is noted by a sharp pain in that area when bending forward. Then I do this trick... I drink lots of water, wait until my bladder is really full and hit the bathroom. I then hold the very tip of my penis tightly so that no pee can come out. I release the stream, causing my urethra to expand (like in the cartoons when someone plugs a fire hose and a big bubble grows near the end), then I release my grip. This cause a huge, fast stream and generally pushes the trapped stone out. Often, I have to keep squeezing off the penis, over and over again while trying to keep urinating, eventually, I pass the stone. In cases where the stone is particularily large or difficult, I will fill the tub with very warm water, get in and get down on all fours, reaching back to perform the same squeezing technique. This allows you to pee underwater and point the penis straight down, an aid to getting it out of the lowest point in the bladder. Yes, I end up sitting in a bathtub full of water (and my own pee) but it works. I find a huge stone in the bottom of the tub. Then I simply shower. Because I form stones so fast, they are generally very jagged, like quartz crystals with spikes on the ends. Stones that spend years froming are generally more round and easier to pass. But often, my stones don't show up on xray because they from so fast, they are not dense and therefore, not radio-opaque. This oftens causes me issues as new doctors think I'm faking a stone. Another trick I use is when I have a stone stuck in my ureter for weeks or months. I go to the E.R. and have them hook me up to a normal sailine I.V. and push it wide open. This moves so much fluid through my kidneys that the stone often moves to the bladder with 2 hours. But this is not recommended for men over 50 as having that much fluid in your boday can cause a heart attack. Basically, you are simulating Congestive Heart Failure by having so much fluid going through your bloodstream. I haven't done the IV thing since I turned 50. As to what causes my stones, they are almost always calcium-oxylate, the typical type. Drinking colas is the number one way people get these stones. But eating nuts is also not a good idea. Many people say coffee is bad (tea is very high in oxylates) but I actually drink only coffee for the past 5 years and have greatly reduced my stone issues. I do drink lots of coffee and some water too so I think the hydration alone is what's working. I spent 2 years drinking 2 bears a day... never created a stone in 2 years. But I couldn't keep my beer gut from forming. Beer is a great diuretic. I also try to take a Flomax when I know I'm about to pass a stone. Makes it easier to release the prostate and get flow going. These are just some of the things I've learned over the years. I hope they help someone. I came here today because I feel like I passed a stone into my bladder but have not been able to flush it out. And at least half the times I go to pee, there is nothing, no pain, no stone trying to exit the bladder near the end. This is very unusual for me. And it happened the same last month... felt I passed a stone but never did. So either I have one stuck in the bladder (which BTW happens often... the bladder is not smooth on the inside, it has lots of folds and crevices that like to hold onto stones) or I am experiencing prostate stones for the first time. I came here looking for symptoms of those as they are new to me. Good luck to all. Drink lots of water!

I have been passing stones since I was 17, now 33, I am passing one on the right side right now, my 3rd in the past 2 months. I have no idea how many i have actually passed on my own over the years, I have had 9 lithotripsies and 2 basket retrieval things and 7 stents. I am a woman and I have a child, and horrible endometriosis, and the kidney stones, the large ones atleast are far worse. I have had stones over a centimeter, I came on here trying to find out if scar tissue to ureters is extremely dangerous, cause I fear that atleast my right ureter is pretty damaged, I don't go to the dr or urologist anymore unless they are too big to pass on my own. As much as this sucks I have to tell you it gave me comfort to know I am not the only one that goes through this, no one understands this kind of pain and condition until you go through it, and when you go through it as often as we do, I think people either think I am lying or I am a baby or something. God bless you all going through this, there really should be a support group for us....we are probably the toughest bunch of people next to navy seals :-D
I have had kidney stones for 16 years in a row. I was wondering how many one person can pass without causing irreversible damage. I have had about everything told to me about eat this and don't eat that...but they are always forming. The last cat-scan I had showed 17 between the two kidneys. This was after Lythotrypsie so I really don't know what to do. I am a single mom and am scared of what will happen if I can come back from one of these.
Nice one !!! I have a 6mm stone stuck near my bladder. I had spasmic pains in my penis. But not anymore. It may have dropped in the bladder or something. I'll keep drinking water and hope this comes out soon.
Had stones for 9 years, passed about 7 but not passed one for about 2 years. I had an Xray about 16 months ago which showed a 6mm stone, it's not passed yet and I get no pain in my kidneys I do get bladder pains and for about 16 months I have had trouble peeing. I go more often than normal but don't pee much. I usually have to ease the pee out at the start or it's painful and I get a constand ache in my bladder with a pain sometimes in the left side. I personally though it was prostate trouble but a blood test ruled that out. The Doctors are convinced it's a stone but I worry it could be something else.
I got my 1st stone hen i was 10 years old i am 32 now.  I have had over 10 operations to remove the bigger stones via the flexible laser and basket as well as passing maybe 10 more myself through my penis to confirm yes I am a man . After my 1st stone at 10 years old; (which managed to disappear all by itself the day before my 1st operation!) I never got another stone until I was 18 which I passed myself! Between the age of 18 and 22 I never had another issue with stones and by the way I must state I was at Uni and drinking heavily and eating badly which I don’t understand… but reading the posts about drinking beer it really does seem to add up!! Since the age of 22 I have generated stones constantly in both my kidneys and can’t get seem to get stone free not even for a month of course u I have constant infections etc along with this. I can generate a 12mm stone in around 3 months from a stone free kidney. At the moment I currently have stones in both kidneys as I type. I got the 360 x-ray done about 6 months ago and there was two 6mm stone on the left and a few smaller ones in the right kidney. There wont do another xray as I have had so many and they say they already know there are stones there…which I suppose is true however I do like to know where bouts they are and how big they’ve got!! The waiting list for the operations is over a year here in Northern Ireland and I therefore can’t get on it quick enough for removal before they gopt lodged in the urethra.  When the next big stone has formed and it eventually gets lodged and the serious pain kicks in and I get an emergencey operation by going through A&E! I am constantly sick because of this I have tried everything from  a meat free diets, drinking freshly squeezed lemon juice, vinegar, barley water, special mixtures and even drinking some live fungus stuff I  know but I’m desperate. None of it has worked I have been metabolically tested a number of time with a 48 hour pee test and nothing outside the usual ranges has shown up, the doctors are miffed and just aren’t interested anymore, I am not even put onto the operation list anymore because I always fall over and go to A&E before my operation date comes up!! To top this off I am getting married in 7 weeks and look and feel awful I really only get a couple of weeks bliss after an operation before the tired sick and painful feelings kick in again! I have to go into A&E and fight my corner to get into a ward and get an operation, you see if the stone is not stuck in the urethra then they just say it’s not an emergency case and send me home even if the pain is unmanageable. The sad thing is I actually want my stone to get stuck so I can get it removed I very rarely pass the big ones myself although my record is 12mm by 4mm…something I really should not be proud off!! I just seem to be stuck at the moment going in and out of hospital while having to suffer between operations. I actually enjoy getting in for the operations now as I can be recovered from it within a few days easily and feel great…if just for a couple of weeks!! Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do about this I really am lost at the moment my wedding is in 7 weeks and my honeymoon is n Hong Kong and Thailand not somewhere you want to have to go into hospital for an emergencey!!! Anyway it was great to read some of your stories and I wish you all well!! PS F%^ck kidney stone ha!!
hey, I am going through this for the first time, I had pain wed. last week at the ER, The pain stopped and returned Sat. for a few hours, and then again on thurs. is this normal?
Why do the dr.s not want to use the ultra sound or medication to desolve the stones unless they have no choice? is there bad side effects?
I was back in A&E last week with my pain i thought teh stone might be stuck but was not sure, it wasnt so i was given morphine and sent home. I have now be given a date for shockwaves before my wedding so hopefully it will break them up! In response there is no medication that has worked for me..i have tried them all! Teh shockwave has never worked either i have had it about 10 times, however i am crossing my fingers it will this time!!
Yes this can happen and it can change all of a sudden from nothing to unbearable pain!
Dear all, Gosh there are some serious stories above, particularly with regards to the number and frequency that many of you are getting stones. I really feel for you folks! I am 41 and have my first (and last!!) stone which is 6mm in the right kidney and am trying to pass it naturally. I did some research and am trying plenty of fluids, lemon juice and Chanca Piedra (Phyllanthus niruri). I have only been doing this for a few days but the level of pain has dropped hugely such that I'm barely using painkillers now. This could be a coinicidence as kidney stone pain typically comes and goes but I'm hoping the Chanca Piedra might be helping! I also wonder if it might help some of you long-term stone formers. There are some scientific papers that indicate the herb is effective - particularly in preventing stone formation. It also appears to smooth off the edges of pre-exisiting stones and may also shrink them and make them softer. Gosh I hope so! They studied the effect of the herb in rats with stone 'seeds' put into their bladders, which grew over time into calcium/oxalate stones.  It had good effects over about 40 days.  It would be interesting to see what effects the herb has in a shorter timeframe but the paper does not address this. People discuss their experiences with the herb in helping them with their stones. I am particularly interested in the apparent ability of the herb to prevent the actual formation of kidney stones which might be of great use to those of you who are getting them in large numbers! Some people also claim their existing stones are disssolved.  sounds great if it is true. I have no affiliattion with any stores or anyone that grows this herb but I bought my Chanca Piedra from a local herb seller in Australia but most other people seem to get theirs via Amazon.dom. Another person sourced theirs from. They generally seem pretty happy with the results. Have any of you folks tried this herb and can you let us know how it may have worked for you? As with many drugs and natural remedies some people typically respond and others may not but it sounds very much worth a try. ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed***Please read our Terms of Use Patrick
Only thing that's worked for me is many litres of water and pain killers AND a vegetarian diet. Since the diet adjustments calcium output cut 50%
A moderator has removed the link to the papers and other material in my post above. No links allowed! If any of you would like to find and read the paper just paste "Phyllanthus niruri as a Promising Alternative Treatment for Nephrolithiasis" into google and then choose the NCBI link in the results. The NCBI page will have a button near the top right corner which reads "Free full text, Int Braz J Urol". clicking on that link will take you to the paper. I hope these directions don't violate and rules too...
To All I have had kidney stones for about 30 years now. My bodies process takes 2-3 months to get the stones out and get back to normal. In almost all cases the Urologist could not find stones on the CT scans, but I have found stones as proof. Out of my desperation I have tried just bout any remedy listed on the internet. By far the most productive has been a 6 pack of coke followed by 6-8oz of asparagus followed by a gallon of distilled water. Within hours I can see and catch stones. The other that has has some success is Chamomile flowers. Take 3-4 tables spoons of Chamomile flowers and boil them in 6-8 cups of water. Strain it into a cup and drink it through out the day with other fluids. mybe this will be some help Craig
Thanks Craig, I have been on the Chanca Paedra for 2.5 weeks now and am in much better shape - still some discomfort but no pain. I've not touched any painkillers for a week and can sleep at night undisturbed. That said, while the stone no longer hurts me I can still feel it is there so I'm thinking of trying the coke and asparagus trick this weekend to see if I can get rid of it once and for all. It is 6mm by 3mm in size and I am of an average size so I'm not sure I can pass it! You mention that you have tried many of the remedies on the internet - did you ever try the chanca paedra (stonebreaker) and did you have any success with it? Cheers, Patrick
The Lemon will help with the arthritis as well. Lemon, although acid, leaves and alkaline ash inside the body. You need to read everything you can about acid/alkaline balance in the body. what to eat and drink and what not to eat and drink. It makes a huge differance. Over time.. The Arthritis pain just goes away. Omega 3 fatty acids also help. Been there done that.
