I have the same problem since 18 and now i am 27. i tried everything in comments nothing help. I lost a lot of opportunities in my life because of my stupid stomach ( drop my classes , quit my job ...ets) and i moved from my country just to avoid any social events and meeting my friends. I really feel the pain of each one of you and how this runnid your life . lately i go to psychiatric and he told me that i have an OCD I started take a medicine for that but only make me feel happy and more open to share things with others but didn't solve the problem . if any one want to share or meet or start a group to talk about this , it will be a good idea .thanks and you are not alone .
To those who try to suggest a healthy life style, I should say that I have also examined almost ANY thing, nothing works 100%, nor the problem can be exactly zeroed out. The psychological discomfort that this problem creates is directly a byproduct of that, it is not vise versa, that is, this digestive problem causes psychological problems, not the other way around.

Hello guys! Just like the rest of you all, my stomach has been acting up for the past few months and it has been quite the experience! I have been reading through many of the posts on this topic and on this website and I have seen many people share how they fixed their stomach issues, both completely and partially, and to save you all the time and trouble of scrolling through the pages of this discussion, I have copied and pasted some of the success stories below.
I’m still on the search for a cure for my stomach, and while I don’t know what’s causing it or how I can stop it, I know a few things that have helped minimize the sounds and trips to the bathroom.
Get plenty of rest, eat dry foods for lunch and breakfast (bread, crackers, etc.) and avoid eating greasy foods, eat small snacks (i.e., pretzels) and meals throughout the day and don’t drink lots of liquids at once-take sips (don’t starve or dehydrate yourself, it will only allow the sounds to be heard even more), exercise (avoid applying lots of pressure on your stomach...sit-ups, for example), practice not thinking about it or worrying when you feel your stomach moving things around (this really helps!), GO TO THE BATHROOM WHEN YOU NEED TO GO TO THE BATHROOM (I could have saved so many embarrassing moments if I had just done this when I felt like I needed to go), talk your teachers about letting you leave the room when you need to or feel uncomfortable, and go see a gastrologist! These are all that I can think of… I also read on other pages that taking a supplement called “Glutamine” can really help heal your stomach if you have a leaky gut. I’m currently trying this, and unfortunately and I have not seen improvement in my stomach. I have not tried any of these solutions below, but I’m planning on testing out a few (mainly taking potassium) and I’m hoping it will work. If I find something that works for me I will let you guys know! Praying for y’all!
(Some of the solutions that aren’t mentioned below but have helped people include drinking olive oil, taking Diflucan (prescribed by doctor), taking one teaspoon of Apple Cider vinegar every day for a couple of weeks, taking Pepto Bismol, taking Bentyl (prescribed by doctor), or taking an enzyme called Pepsin.)
“To everyone that has the loud stomach growling with no pain or other intestinal problems, I have found one possible cause. I have researched this for about 4 years now. It is a situation that can ruin lives for people who need to sit in quiet situations. I am an actress and I am so fearful of a quiet set, recording, classroom situations, plays, movie screenings, etc. The problem got really bad this past year and I also started to have light heart palpitations in the past few days. I thought it might be due to drinking too much coffee. When I searched the heart palpitation possible causes I was led to a potassium deficiancy. The medical journal said a potassium deficiancy can cause "hyperactive bowel sounds." It went on to state that there would be abnormally loud activity in the abdomen. I keep a diet diary because I am always watching my weight. I eat a lot of salads and lean meats. Well......bingo.....almost no potassium. This morning I had orange juice, and a banana with natural peanut butter on it. Absolutely no noises for 4 hours. When I got hungry a normal stomach growl happened. I ate a baked potato for lunch - no growls. For dinner I had a Lean Cuisine, but I included an artichoke and some dried figs. NO NOISES people!! No palpitations. High potassium foods are as mentioned above, artichokes, dried fruits, potatoes and sweet potatoes, bananas, yogurt, orange juice, tomatoes, peanut butter. From Internet research I found that adults need 2,000 - 6,000 mg of potassium daily but you can overdo it so you need to keep track. Most adults are lacking, but overdoing it can cause serious problems. My doctors have been terrible with helping me with this problem. They would say stuff like "growling is normal" or "cut cabbage out of your diet" which by the way I probably eat once a year on St. Patrick's Day!!! No doctor has been sympathetic to this problem. We need to be our own advocate. I think money best spent at this point would be a nutritionist to help me design a diet that will continue to keep my weight off, my stomach quiet, and nutritionally balanced.
This is day 1, so I promise I will come back on this board and update you guys. I even want to start a website for this problem because there are SO many of us. Reading these posts over the years has made me feel a little better because it makes me realize that I am not alone. It appears to affect all ages, sizes, etc. That is what is making me think that for those of us who are not suffering from lactose intolerance, Crohn's disease, IBS, etc..........it is probably a potassium deficiancy. Let me know your thoughts everyone. We need to stick together!!”
“Digestive Enzymes helped me tremendously!!! My stomach noises have decreased by about 80%!!!! Try them! There is a clinical strength dose that you can get from Emerson Ecologics, the brand name is INNATE. Good Luck!”
“Hi all,
Yes, many people suffer from this condition it seems, so remember 'You are NOT alone!!!'
But to those of you that are considering quitting school, uni, a job (or who already have; or those trying to avoid those jobs) DON'T!! You will always regret becoming a victim!! Live your life, don't give it up, just because you might make funny noises sometimes!! Do you 'really' care that much about what someone else thinks that you will waste your life in a pointless job to avoid you stomach problems?! That's dumb! Believe me. I thought that way for a while, but now I've gone back to uni and am retraining to get a better career...noises or not! Although, below you will find a few useful foods/tools/techniques that have helped me greatly, and may help you.
Firstly, yes I've had it too for around three years on and off. I noticed it first while working in London, and one Dr there prescribed Mebeverine (other generic names Colofac, etc.), which is usually used to treat IBS. Although I don't have many of the other symptoms of this type of condition diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, etc., I just get the loud rumbling noises...which are very embarrassing!
Mebeverine is a prescription drug in most countries, but is fairly cheap and it does work. It doesn't 'fix' the problem, but just makes it very quiet (almost inaudible). I still take it, although usually only when I know I will have to sit in a quiet room for a long time (like at uni); however a recent blood test discovered I 'may' actually have 'latent Celiac Disease' (intolerance to gluten). I still have to have an Endoscopy, where they put a tube down your throat and take a tissue sample from the stomach or duodenum lining. This test will prove it one way or another. If it is that, I just have to avoid gluten-related food and the condition will go away.
One other thing is that many Celiac Sufferers may also suffer from skin irritations (dermatitis/dandruff/eczema/psoriasis etc.), because the food isn't processed properly before passing out of the body. This means the skin doesn't get all required nutrients and overreacts to irritants (soaps etc). I have long had some of these other issues (although only minorly). They are all interrelated!
Another Dr said it may just be a 'wheat allergy', so eat less wheat (especially during the early part of the day). You may have this, so for those of you at school/uni etc, sandwiches might not be such a good idea, because of the wheat in bread. Try other alternatives to regular bread. One example of a diet for this may be cornflakes for breakfast (if you eat cereal), salad for lunch, and then if things are okay, you can still have pasta or other wheat-related things for dinner.
One other very simple explanation I've just discovered recently, in case it's not Celiac Disease, is a very common one than a LOT of people unknowingly suffer from is 'Candida', or yeast infection. Women mostly know it as Thrush, but everyone has some Candida in their intestines naturally, and can get yeast infections on the skin or in the intestines.
For a better explanation than I can give, go to the following website. (But be aware that this link leads to an 'adveritsement' so they want to sell you something! I'm not suggesting you buy it, but just take the information and do your own research. Or talk to your Dr about it.
Okay, here's a bit more that helps:
1/ Peppermint (tea, oil, leaves, etc).
2/ Yogurt (especially better quality, with live cultures in it, and also drinking yogurt is great!
3/ Probiotics (yogurt often has some of these). Get the good stuff from the fridge in a chemist of health food store. They're more expensive but better. One brand of this is Culturelle (which I haven't tried, but many swear by).
4/ Strangely...fatty foods seem okay mostly (even bacon and egg muffins). I have discovered there are two groups of people with this condition: those whose stomach is set off by fatty foods, and those set off by healthy foods (vegetables etc.). So experiment!
5/ Croissants seem okay (90% of the time). But just have them with butter, not other fillings, to be safe.
6/ Soft drinks/fizzy drinks/soda (because it makes you burp!). This works equally well for travel sickness, if you have it.
7/ Definitely 'exercise' for at least one hour twice a week. This greatly relieves stress, and strengthens your immune system!
8/ Meditation/Yoga/Tai Chi, etc. All of these are good for releasing stress.
9/ Locate the area of your stomach/bowel making the noise and forcefully hold your palm or fist against it, pressing in firmly for as long as you can (but don't make it too obvious! Lol. Maybe just relax your other hand over the first one, trying to look casual).
10/If all else fails, tighten your stomach muscles and squeeze them really hard, while leaning slightly forward! This usually quietens all but the most 'determined' growls! The added advantage is that you get strong abs!
11/ Last by not least, eat slowly, chew your food well, and try not to 'gulp' too much air when you eat.
I hope some of this 'novel' helps!
Cheers.”
“All these posts have helped me to try and find a solution. So I set out to find out whats was causing my constant gas, growling stomach. My doctor said of course "It could be IBS" - which I didn't believe. Anyways i cleared my system for 2 weeks. Lots of water, stopped all vitamins and stopped the restaurant foods and fatty snacks. I'm not overweight - 180 lbs 5'9 and play pickup hockey indoors. I was still having problems after each meal, and it was getting real annoying and embarrassing. So after ton of reasearch online I found out that a lot of us are not getting enough nutrients (omega-3's) from the foods we eat.
I take one of these everyday around 10:00 am which is my first snack since i do 6 meals a day (breakfast lunch dinner, small snacks in between (snacks and usually fruits during the weekdays) and nothing at night). I do still splurge on weekends with outside food, chips (my fav), alcohol.
It seriously cut down my problem 95% and this is my second month on it. I have not started any other vitamin yet.
good luck!”
“I have all of the same symtoms. I have found huge relief from taking Culturelle. These are capsules containing lactobacillus GG. Although it is promoted to help travelers diarrhea, it works for the bloating, gas and loud growling sounds coming from my stomach and intestines. I have been using in for over a year and whenever I don't take it, the symtoms return. Proof enough for me. Give it a try!! I highly recommend it. You can buy it at most drugstores but you can also go to their website. Google Culturelle. :-D”
“TNTOUGH, I know your post is 7 years old, BUT, I want to THANK YOU! I'm 39 years old and have had this horrible problem since my freshman year in college. I feel for so many of you who are students experiencing anxiety over this! I went through a TOUGH 4 years, dodging classes, worrying about my stomach making these TERRIBLE noises, and fellow student staring at me. I visted many doctors in college and it was ALWAYS the same recommendation... Metamucil, prescription AXID to lower the acid in my stomach, charcoal tablets, Pepto tabs, Tums, etc. etc. I just accepted my "stomach" issues until a few weeks ago when my stomach went absolutely BEZERK during a church meeting! I "googled" and found this blog. I have been on Culturelle and it's been GREAT. It's not a 100% fix, but it's DRASTICALLY cut my "stomach issues" and noises! I've been eating better, smaller portions, drinking a lot of water, and popping a Culturelle tablet every morning. It's helped me so much... Cut out carbonated drinks, sip slowly (no gulps), small portions, and don't eat a big meal before classes/meetings. Hope this helps...”
“I have this too. It is caused by a bacteria that is passed through saliva. Did you kiss someone that has this, share drinks, or share utensils? I got it from a kiss. The guy didn't even use his tongue, but there was definite saliva swappage. Now my stomach growls like his.
You can go to a dentist that does "oral dna" testing. There are 3 oral dna tests. One for genetic predisposition for periodontal disease, one for oral hpv testing, and one for bacterial analysis. Get the one for bacterial analysis. Unfortunately the test is so new that insurance will not cover it. It will cost around $175. For best results, don't gargle any mouthwash before going, as this could momentarily reduce the bacteria in your mouth.
The bacteria on my chart says it's "refractive" as in, resists treatment. But there were other bacteria on my chart as well, so you may not have the same ones I have. The guy that gave this to me has had it for about 15 years. He knew he was giving it to me but went ahead anyway. He did not warn me.”
“I have a similar problem. Heres what i did and it works for me. I take 1 Zinetac and 1 Stelbid tablet BEFORE breakfast and BEFORE Lunch....and BEFORE dinner but only if required. I avoid artificial sweetners, milk and milk products and uncooked/undercooked food. Have 1 banana after lunch and 2 after dinner....have enough water from time to time. Do not have too much of Stelbid tablet in one day. Stelbid dries the mouth and makes you sleepy. I hope this helps you. God Bless. Love from India....”
“I developed "noisy stomach" about two years ago. I relate to you completely about the fear of quiet places. I found what helped me tremendously is acai berry. I take a liquid supplement I found on Amazon (the brand name is "now" and it's about $12 for a month supply). The day I started taking it the noise all but disappeared. I found when I buy the cheap stuff from Grocery Outlet, it doesn't work. I hope this helps! Good luck!”
“I have suffered with the symptoms of Growling stomach(especially in quiet places)such as in my lessons at school and exams where i cant concentrate or actually do any work-really frustrating!!
diarrhea or runny poo all the time which is worse on some days than others (sorry for the gross details)
flatulence-farting which i feel like i am just doing constantly and is really embarrasing and just feels like it cant be normal :(
feeling of your stomach insides actually moving about and feeling of gas or something kicking my stomach from the inside and regular pain like a tight knot inside
Theres just so many more symptoms which im sure you are aware of if you have the same problem as me but these are the main ones that are just wrecking my life basically!!
Well anyway i began to blame the food i eat for these symptoms as i looked up on the internet that these symptoms could be because of 'lactose intolerance' or 'ibs' or all sorts of things.
I have to tell you this though ever since i began refusing to eat wheat, milk, too much fibre like loads of fruit, i have really noticed that in just a couple of days the symptoms have almost disapeared :) i didnt really know what sort of things to eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner as i always had a milk with cereal, sandwhiches and pasta but now i just mainly eat salad with rice or baked potato.Honestly if you really have no idea whats causing these symptoms just try cutting out wheat(so pasta, bread)whether its wholegrain or not and milk.See if this works for you because so far its done wonders for me.”

One thing I noticed and it may be the casue of this loud sound. I noticed that when I have my breakfast as cornflexx with milk, I have sounds on that day. When I dont eat conrflexx, no sounds. I used to eat cornflex on my breakfast. But since I changed to different type of cornflex, the sounds started. I am still observing it to make sure if the cause is really cornflexx or not.
We are all different so I don't know if it will help others, but after a couple of years I figured out that I couldn't have sugar in the morning. It didn't start until I was about 15 or so but I would have horrendously loud stomach gurgling, so much that people would look at me and I would kind of try to laugh it off, but it usually also came with stomach cramps and at least a couple times every week it would be followed with me struggling to make it to the end of class because I had diarrhea.
I finally started keeping a diary of everything I was eating and if there was anything stressful happening (tests, projects I wasn't ready for) and found that for some reason if I eat sugar (refined or natural) within about 2 hours of waking up it would give me the stomach gurgle and if I was stressed on top of it (also just stressed from the noise) then there was a good chance I'd be spending 10 minutes in the bathroom.
