Hello everyone, I have been smoking marijuana regularly for the past 2 years. I had to stop smoking during the last week because I travelled to go visit some of my relatives and where I am right now I wouldnt know how to score any. I have noticed that since I stopped smoking ( it's day number 6 now) I am suffering from chronic diarrhea. My question is if it is possible that it could somekind of marijuana withdrawal symptom or is it something I am eating here? Sorry for the bizzare topic. It's just that I wanted to be sure wether it's the marijuana or not before seeking proffessional help. Thank you in advance for your answers.
Well, a friend of mine suffered severe abdominal pain for a week or so after quitting marijuana but I can’t say if it would cause diarrhea for such a long time.
Any diarrhea that lasts longer than 7 days should be checked. If it is just diarrhea, then I wouldn’t suspect the stomach flue as with stomach flue you would feel very weak, fatigue, possibly have fever and maybe even vomit.
If it is only diarrhea, you may think if you are eating something at your relatives’ that you haven’t been eating before or not.
I can’t say with certainty that it ain’t marijuana as marijuana is said not to cause any physical dependence but as we all are individuals, you never can tell foe sure.
If the problem persists, see a doctor.

I have also been having this problem. Two weeks ago, I decided to quite smoking marijauana. The 3-4 days were hell as I suffered from withdrawal. I smoked twice in the past two weeks, this past friday being the last time. However, every moring I wake up, I have diarrhea and will be fine for the rest of the day. I took immodium hoping that it would solve my problem, but it just prevent me from having a bowel movement for one day. At this point, Im concerned and annoyed, and have decided to check up with the Doc to see what the possible problem is. Im going to try and avoid the topic of marijuana even though I should mention it, as it would help him give me a better diagnosis.
Of course marihuana can cause severe diarrea. If you stop smoking it then this is how your body is saying good bye to the remmnants of all the THC you put it through. Remenber that you ingested a substance w which you are no longer doing. Listen to your body . Diarrea is not always a bad thing. Marihuana is absorbed everywhere specially in your small intestine. (trust me I know, been a daily smoker for the past 8 years). even though marihuana is not crack, it is still a foreign substance that your metabolism must recognize and decide in whatever way IT wants to metabolize it (we are all different). After ingesting or smoking mariuana your body might be saying I miss it or i am glad that you are not smoking it right now lets cleanse our body diarrea here wecome!! YOU KNOW>>>>
Not necessarily funny Ha, though. ;-) I had an interview for a job that required drug testing. Norml.com's got some great, practical tips in those instances. They mention washing yourself out, but also that the main metabolite that drug tests look for, namely THC-COOH, is too big a molecule to pass through urine but is instead eliminated through feces. It might be an elimination issue as was proposed earlier, but then again, I'm not a doctor. I would take close inventory of the food you are eating at your relatives and check if any of them are natural diuretics. I ate potatoes with a WHOLE lot of fresh dill (a natural diuretic) on them to increase the water concentration of my urine for the test, and I admit to not being quite prepared for the result. ;-) That symptom has subsided, so if it's just lack of weed doing it to you, I'm taking a wild stab that yours will subside as well. Keep your fluid levels up in the meantime, and take it way easy on your stomach.
Good luck with the abstinence.

Ganja definitly stimulates your apetite, metabolism, and digestive function.
The problem (and solution) is simple though. Your diets and apetite probably changed when you quit. Not as hungry, not as much fluid - maybe to much fluid not enough food ratio kind of a thing. I smoke, and I quit, and I smoke, and I quit. Gotta get a new job, get tested, new woman wants me to stop, new woman wants me to start.
Everyones different but the answer lies within yo belly. Find a healthy diet that works for your altered digestive function. And if you just can't bare the chronic diarrhea, THEN JUST BARE THE CHRONIC! I mean come on, I bet you could find a doctor to prescribe you the dank as medication for your diarrhea sickness or whatever. :O
-Why do you smoke weed?
-I have to control my chronic diarrhea. (that be awesome!)

Hey.,. found this interestinf thread through google...
I've heard that cannabis may increase the amount of fat in liver... which sounds baad... and liver is said to be a part of many stomach problems... dunno...
When smoking daily all day long... it causes me a nasty morning nausea... making sometimes me allmost 2 vomit.
I recommend every1 to eat lots of fibers and taking extra care of their health if smoking daily...
mmm.. ... puff... 8)

Interesting topic. I would definitely agree that the cause of the diarrhea is likely your body trying to flush the toxins out of its system. That said, the main physiological effects of Cannabis are an increase in heart rate and reddening of the eyes. Opioids (heroin, Morphine, cocaine), on the other hand can, slow down the functions of the GI Tract so much that it can cause constipation until your body adjusts to the levels, after which things get going normally again. When you stop taking a drug like heroin, the body no longer has control over the speed at which food passes through the tract, causing diarrhea. A good rule of thumb to remember is that withdrawal symptoms generally present themselves as opposite to the drugs effects (ie. Marijuana stimulates the appetite, so when you abstain from using it, you generally experience a lack of hunger). Technically, I wouldn't classify it as a withdrawal symptom. Your body will also try to evacuate many foreign substances through diarrhea that are not illicit drugs - this is why you're running to the toilet after eating foods that have not been prepared properly (food poisoning, salmonella, etc).
Hope that helps! :-)
Hope that helps! :-)
I have been an avid smoker for over a year, over this last month or two of trying to quit I've come up with about a week of not smoking which has resulted in diarrhea quit often. This sounds bad, but its not so much as liquid but very light in color and very soft, so compact diarrhea basicly but thats at best. I have to say for being a harmless drug it sure as hell has alot of withdrawl effects, worse than quiting smoking cigs after 5 years of reds. I also have an addictive personality to a certian degree. Other effects: mood swings, by 11am if I haven't smoked I start to get light headed, sometimes I wont eat until 5 or 6 at night, I have yet to eat today and its almost 2 am and i've been up sice 9 am. I just need to go longer than a few days at a time and really quit. Good luck to the rest of you.
I can for sure relate to this! And hell yeah this is gross! I might have it bad, since for the next week im in canada with my mother, no weed and nothing to smoke out of. But every other day before I left I smoked, and ive been having diarrhea for over a week. And today more then ever since i havnt smoked for over 24 hours now. My plane flight sucked, out of a total of 6 hours on both planes i had to go like 3 times, twice at airports and now that im at a friends ive already gone 5 times and only got her after 6 and its 2:30 now... its bad. its gross and everytime i have to go, worst part is I dont have time to figure out what I can fix... arnt there like pills to help with this sh*t. What if I try to go get laid what im i going to say in the middle of sex... hold on i gotta take a dump... im sure no dude would want to hear that! but i did my research, so pretty much this sucks but if its not from you stopping smoking, there is some sort of animal sh*t in your weed, and when the weed tries the sh*t stays on it, and can produce in you wet sh*t. Nasty right!
IN GENERAL: Diarrhea can be caused by all sorts of things. Rule out problem foods and potential food poisoning first (a fever is your best indicator of food poisoning), and be aware of any significant mental changes happening upstairs, in particular anxiety. If you've got diarrhea that lasts more than three days with no probable cause, see a medical professional. Heck, see a medical professional anyway, even if you've got probable cause.
As mentioned in previous posts, if you're an everyday MJ smoker who's tapering off or quitting, it's natural for your body to want to flush itself of toxins and foreign substances, particularly from the small intestine, where the majority of cannabinoids are absorbed. I've heard of MJ-related diarrhea lasting from a few days to a few weeks.
Part of the problem may also be due to intestinal motility. THC has been shown to produce a calming effect on the small bowel muscles of mice (a handy substitute for people in lab experiments). This is why IBS and IBD patients often find relief from MJ.
If you've smoked for years, it's probable that some of those muscles in your small bowel may be under-exercised, or that you're experiencing a "rebound" effect -- your muscles have been receiving calming signals for a long time, and as a result may be producing stronger or abnormal muscular contractions in the absence of their "normal" environment (e.g. MJ-induced relaxation). This should clear up as the THC leaves your system and your normal muscular patterns reestablish themselves.
Additionally, the entire gut is actually a second CNS (known as the enteric nervous system). Although your brain and normal nervous system does most of the thinking and moving for your body, you've got a back-up system in your intestines which is involved in of lots of interesting things, including lower brain functions (such as moving your bowels) and the production of serotonin and other important neurotransmitters.
Disrupting your body's expected daily THC dose can disrupt those neurotransmitters, causing feelings of depression, anxiety, irritability, moodiness...making you feel like c**p, and, more to the point, feel like crapping. This is known as mind-gut dysbiosis in medical literature, which is a fancy way to say that your brain and your bowels are affecting one another far more than they should be. This makes it tough to pinpoint an exact cause (whether mental or physical) for diarrhea in general, and particularly when coming off of marijuana.

i am suffering with diarrhea also! its only been a day without weed for me and my stomach hurts to mad to leave my house! i hope to god that it doesnt last as long as it did for you but i guess it is a withdrawal. sorry man. we should just not quit haha
can you actually get medical marijuana for chronic diarrhea?
I've been a pot smoker since high school and I'm about to turn 42. My usage has gone up and down depending on what is going on in my life. I probably smoked less in college because I was focused on my studies. I have been smoking almost daily for 2 years and that includes vacations to Mexico and trips home to see the family and friends.
Anyway, I decided last week I was going to chill out for a while....not a good idea to quit cold turkey. In 4 days all I have eaten is one slice of pizza, half a chicken breast and a Payday candy bar. I have no appetite and as I look through the pantry, fridge and freezer NOTHING sounds appealing. Additionally I have lost about 5-6 pounds over the 4 days and I have had diarrhea even though I'm not really eating anything. I've never been a great sleeper but I can see a little difference there as well....maybe missing another 2 hours of solid sleep and lots of crazy ass dreams.
I don't really feel bad but just not myself physically. I haven't really dealt with the sadness, depression or anxiety that I hear about but I've never been one to get depressed.
Good luck to those of you trying to stop, slow down or take a break...it ain't easy!

well done to guest for quitting...
again i find myself here looking through forums to see what other people are going through. I have been quit now since the end of january over 2 months.... I mean i am still stook in 2 worlds, should i have quit because it will have made my life better or should i have stayed smoking where i felt fine all the time? I have been prescribed anti depressants and they have cleared up alot of symptoms, I am posting reallt to say again, i quitt cold turkey( i say cold turkey but i was never really heavy and had lots of spells where i had nights of etc etc) only after 3 weeks of quitting did my syptoms show up, so beware that it might take a month before you experience any other syptoms. Mine involed 1 night where i woke up drenched in sweat, then the next day i just couldnt sleep and had a panic attack/dizzy spell that i never really got better with. It took 5 weeks and i was still up and down really bad, which led me to try the anti depressants for a bit of stability. So maybe it does really take people months to fully recover, i have been over 2 months and well yeah i am still not 100% but pretty much just get spells of anxiety and depression. Hopefully in one more month i will be totally free from all the negativity surrounding the use of cannabis.
To my main point also... it really helped me get through this because my best friend who quit 2 years ago said he had a really bad time. he didnt relize it was the weed first but after 5 weeks of constantly throwing up and having diahrea and not eating anything(he had lost about 3-4 stone) he was looking really really bad...he aslo said he had all the other syptoms that wnet with it too, really bad depression, couldnt sleep or stay asleep, felt really low etc etc... Basically he had to have all tests done to check it wasnt IBS or other stomach related problems, basically it was all to do with the weed, after taking anti depreessants for 9 months he was 100% better after 3 months of taking them, he still had to have a camera up his arse, But afetr all his syptoms cleared after a couple fo months his stomach and diahrea went away. I havent really expericend any throwing up or diahrea as such.. But good luck to every1, i am starting a new thread on recovery and the time length and how people are adjusting to the process, peace
