Just a note: I suffered from gastroparesis for years and tried every medicine out there. Then a few months ago I tried marijuana and it actually HELPED. I'm not just talking a little bit either- it's allowed me to be able to eat anything again and live a normal life. It's amazing! I never smoked before getting this condition and I was throwing up some 12 times a day. Apparently different people react differently...

how bout this for a theory , we've all smoked for as long as can be and problems with gastro etc have only come up recently and wide spread... theory... what if there spraying plants with paraquat weed killer again or some other toxin... i recently found a bag of weed {smells ordinary etc} but immediately causes headaches in people who smoke it .. could there be a contamination ...say a drug agency trying to eradicate it and spraying chems that people end up ingesting and becoming ill from ... some interesting study material from cornell univ.for you all >>http://pmep.cce.cornell.edu/profiles/extoxnet/metiram-propoxur/paraquat-ext.html hope this helps

I too have been dealing with an addiction to marijuana for the last 4 years. Like many on this website, I too developed severe stomach problems from smoking. I've smoked everyday over the years and now find that I can't eat unless I am high. This is day #3 without any pot and the nausea is still strong. I don't know if I have the flu or if it's side effects of coming off the THC. If feel so anxious over these days that it makes me sick, and the only reason I got a good night sleep last night was because I took gravol to keep me from throwing up. (I feel like im standing on the 1st tee of a golf course alllll the time)

I'm hoping a week away from any pot intake will help the side-effects I've been having. It almost feels like there is a lump in my throat if I try to eat sober. The main reason I've smoked over the years is simply to put on weight as I've been skinny my entire life. I want to thank everyone that has posted on this website, knowing you're not the only one going through this definately helps me out.

Does anyone know how to stimulate your appetite? And also help with the feeling of anxiety? The last thing I want to do is go to a doctor and have her prescribe me medications for a self-induced problem.

I'm replying to my own post of a week ago to let everyone know that the week of hell is WELL worth it to overcome you're dependancy on pot. As I stated above, I've smoked everyday for 4 years and have always said that one day would come that I just didn't want to do it anymore. That day finally came a couple weeks ago and this website was a BIG help in dealing with the initial hell that is the first few days of withdrawl. Knowing that other people were going through the same hell as me was a great help. We've all been told that marijuana isn't addictive, and I generally believe that still. However, I can tell you that your body will go through 7-10 days of withdrawl symptoms that make you want to run and smoke a bong. BUT DON'T. After about the 10th day your desire to smoke will be completely gone due to the fact you just feel so much more healthy.

I can't stress enough that the last couple days have been the best I've felt in years. The flu-like symptoms I spoke of subsided after about the 4th day (nausea, diarhea). I still had trouble eating and sleeping for a few days - I lost 12 pounds in just over a week due to it. I only weighed 138 in the first place (you do the math - and I'm a male), but I've been eating very well the last 2 days and have been able to put a couple of the pounds back on.

I'm going to go through the process I used to let everyone know how it went down:

Day 1 - 3: ABSOLUTE HELL. Couldn't sleep, hot/cold flashes, sweating. I took gravol to help with the nausea and being a drowsy medication it really helped with the insomnia.

Day 4-7: My stomach was feeling better but my throat felt like it was closing up when I would go to eat, I no longer took the gravol and I was able to sleep relatively fine on my own for about 6-7 hours. (better then nothing)

Day 7: The anxiety at the 7th day was still a huge issue and I was becoming concerned with my weight loss. I went to see the doctor at my University and she diagnosed me with severe anxiety due to me coming off the THC (and I'm also a worryer in general) and prescribed me the anti-anxiety medication APO-CITALPROM. This mediaction (non-addictive) takes 2 weeks to take effect so she prescribed me an anti-depressant to help me with those 2 weeks (PMS-CLONAZEPAM). This medication is addictive over long term use so don't expect to be using it for long (I stated to her I don't want to be replacing one drug with another) but it helps immensely while you wait for the Citalprom to take effect.

Day 7-10: The medication I was prescribed had a dramatic effect one me almost immediately. After taking it in the morning the "Standing on the first tee of a golf tournament" feeling I was having in my throat before I would eat had completely subsided. I've been able to eat with no problems at all and have begun to put the weight back on that I had lost in the initial first week. I can't stress enough I haven't felt this good/comfortable in my own in skin a long time.

This is the first website I've ever posted to (I'm more of just a reader) but I felt it necessary to describe my situation as the vast amount of posts similar to mine helped me deal with my ordeal. This is the only website I have found that is a true community of assistance. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HAS POSTED BEFORE ME. I'll close by listing some of the methods I used to help me relax over those first few days.

- Talk to people about it, and make sure they are the kind of people you don't want to let down.
- Hot baths on the first few days REALLY help calm you down. Drink some gatorade I think the electrolytes help.
- I bought those breath right nasal strips to assist my sleeping and the general congestion I had from smoking - THEY HELP
- Learn how to meditate...I didn't believe in it before, but it does help you calm down just focusing on your breathing.
- If you can find a hottub or a sauna they really help you relax. I'm lucky to have both in my building and the sauna is a godsend.
- Drink lots of antioxidents - I switched from coffee to green tea. Also pound back the water as this will help in flushing the THC out of your fat cells.
- Make sure you eat foods that are bursting with flavor...my taste buds have come back around and the "bland-ness" of the taste of food that I had after quitting has subsided and I now salivate at the thought of eating :-).
- Stay positive, you owe it to noone else but yourself to quit.

I hope all this helps someone out there. It truly did help me - a lot of thanks goes to all the other people posting their situations that helped me push myself through those first few days.

Just ask yourself this question during the entire time: DO YOU LOVE POT MORE THEN YOU LOVE YOURSELF?

I'll post again in the next couple weeks once I'm off the meds just to give an idea of how well it's all worked. STICK WITH IT - you can do it.

PS: I still stand by my previous opinion of marijuana...it's a great drug, it needs to be legalized, tax the hell out of it (instead of giving the $ to criminals), and use it for all the medical advantages that it has. The only problem is I abused the drug the same as an alcoholic abuses booze - if you can't smoke it responsibly, then you don't deserve to smoke it at all. Admitting you no longer can enjoy the drug responsibly is the biggest step. I know I can't, but I also know I've never felt this good in a long time...all the bongs in the world can't get me this high on life :-).

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

So I have currently been smoking for almost ten years now. Sometimes I find myself getting paranoid, or even having panic attacks when on weed. This is because marijuana changes your brain waves and causes your thought proccess to change, sometimes even dramatically. Well anyway, I have recently had a endoscopic scope done (scope down your throat) to check for ulcers or other stomach problems. I was having panic attacks and mild stomach problems when smoking pot. I have horrible stomach problems anyway so it didn't help to smoke or drink. The doctor told me the marijuana can irritate the ulcers or even cause them. Tobacco, greasy foods, medicines, or even alcohol can cause these stomach problems. If you really feel that your stomach hurts more than usual, change your diet, try only taking a few hits here and there..if this doesn't help you might want to go to your doctor and suggest a scope done. Don't be afraid, tell your doctor smoking irritates your stomach..if you lie then your doctor may have the wrong diagnoses for your problem. If smoking really upsets your stomach too much then I suggest not smoking.. ;-)

I am a 31 year old female and I've been smoking weed very heavily for maybe 7 years now. Yes, it does cause stomach issues. Especially if you already suffer from conditions such as acid reflux and Gerd disease.

Sometimes my stomach hurts so badly, I can hardly function(LOL), but as soon as the pain goes away, I'm firing up that 'J.' I sometimes lose my appetite for weeks which results in rapid weight loss. Eventually my appetite comes back and I pick up the weight again but the increase and decrease in weight causes saggy skin and cellulite. Therfore marijuanna wears and tears on the body as well.

With that being said, I feel when it gets this bad, your body is saying " Hey, can I get a break!!!" But when your addicted to the "High," it's hard to not smoke...at leat for me it is. I recently quit for 8 months and felt as free as a bird. My stomach hurted maybe once only because I actually have Gerd.

Smoking bad pot or "Bap" is the worst!! It can give you this condition in your chest, not sure what it's called but everytime you take a deep breathe, you will feel a sharp pain deep in your chest. Scarey but it has lead me to the emergency room 3 times.

Marijuanna is only cool if you have control over it. But evidently neither of us have control because we all have symptoms, and deep down inside we know the cause but we still smoke and make our selves feel bad. I heard on the radio once that if you are in your car and the "Check Engine" light comes on, you will immediately seek a solution heading straight to the mechanic. But when it comes down to our health, we won't head straight to the doctor. We'd rather swallow some ibuprofen and call it a day. We all need to do better!

If quitting is not an option, I would suggest the following:

1.) Only smoke a high grade of marijuanna such as "Purp" or "Kush." They come in small quantites for a higher price but at the same time it tastes good, you can out the "j" for later (put it out) and you will smoke less during your day.

2.) Try to smoke more solo than in groups. By designing a routine, you can balance and control the amount you smoke and spend. This way you lessen your chances of smoking "Bap," you won't develop a habit of smoking all day, and you will eleviate people hanging around just for that cause.

3.) Take breaks. Even though you have a routine, break it by skipping a session. You do this by keeping yourself busy. But don't try to make up for it or remind yourself, dang I haven't smoked. Just refocus your mind. This will give your body time to breathe.

4.) Take care of yourself. Understand that these are toxins entering your body, especially if you are rolling in tobacco leaves. Drink plenty of water, take multi-vitamins, no more than 8 hours of sleep a day, avoiding multiple cat naps throughout the day (this causes depression.) Eat healthy and exercise. Use body cleansers to flush you out and colon cleansers. Antioxidants are great also.

5.) Make a goal for yourself that you will eventually quit, if that is what you want to do, or make a goal that you will return to the once "recreational" purpose of marijuanna and not for everyday use. Because we can all admit, it is fun as hell when you begin but after a while....it's like your "STUCK!"

God Bless!!

I am 51 years old and I started smoking MJ when I was a wee bit of just elevan years old. I liked it then and thus began my on and off use of MJ.
I have used MJ off and on for forty years now and have never found there to be any withdrawal other than a few days of irrability. I have never found stomach ach, I have never found lung problems as long as you stay pretty religious to the bong then I think any lung problems will leave you alone. The real problem with MJ is not the resin, we all read how the body easily deals with this, it is the excessive heat that we expose our lungs to when you smoke MJ. Either in a cig, blunt, or pipe, the bong is the only way to go since you filter out so much of what is damaging your lungs. Why do you think those old Turkist gent live to 95 or 100 and smoked off and on for all his life. He could do that cause almost everything they smoke is thru a bong type structure.. Now as far as its extend use and then stopping it, well I have doen this for long times in my life and never seem to have any real problems with it. I plan to give it up shortly for ever since there are some real problems with its use. One is of coure memory, I am sure everyone has experince this but another is a little thing called amotivational syndrome. This is a very real thing and remember the comercial about the kid that says, "I never did anything on Pot". Well this is very true you do nothing on pot. SO GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE AND GET OFF THE DURGS SIMPLE AS THAT. POT WILL MAKE YOU STAND STILL, IF THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT THEN GO FOR IT.

This is the only site I have found about stomach issues associated with smoking weed.

I have been smoking weed all my live but really picked it up a notch the last 3/4 years since DH and I had the kids......lovely way to relax at night when the kiddies are in bed and pop in a movie.

The last 3 months I have been really sick. Getting really back upper left to center abdominal pains, feels just like a gall bladder attack but I had my galbladder taken out 3 yrs ago. It's always after I eat then smoke, or smoke then eat and I totally believe it has something to do with the digestion system relaxing and not responding how it should....like my system is ALSO STONED! EVERYTHING slows right down and I get deathly ill for a good day sometimes.

I stopped smoking for a good 3 weeks and I was perfectly fine, lit up a J ate dinner (when I didn't eat all day) and go sick again. Diahrrea, constipation, I think I have IBS before I smoked and it gets irritated.

I have cut back to only the weekends (Friday and Saturday night) and an odd J during the week, but I smoked 2 days ago, ate lunch and BOOM pain all over again.

I'm acutally high right now but not pain, so it doesn't happen all the time but I don't think I'll be able to smoke the rest of the weekend. Moderation is key.

Hey everything is moderation, you can't over eat, over drink or over smoke. Keeping it at a fine balance is the key to enjoying marijuana. Isn't that how we are to enjoy life?

So now I'm off to find my weed smoking balance........that's going to be hard!

Do you all smoke with butane lighters? I have been smoking for 9 years now and I smoke all day everyday for the most part. I noticed health problems such as scummy lung, nausea, no hunger for days at a time etc.

I have now switched to beeline (vaporizers, and ceramic soldering irons and have very few health problems anymore. Although sometimes I won't be hungry until I've either smoked or forced a few bites into my stomach.

BUTANE IS POISON AND COULD BE CAUSING YOUR NAUSEA! It's known for many other problems as well. Look into this and say no to butane not pot!

My $0.02

I'll keep checking back on this topic because it's very interesting and I want to get more information on this. I smoke too much weed to ignore it!

Hey im 23 and just got outta the hosital a few days ago. I am feeling the same pains as all of you, cant sleep eat or hold down anything just vomiting and watnot. The very first time this happend to me was the day after a serious car accident and that night I drank 6 double shots of vodka in like 5 minutes. So coulda been any of those two... I think its what kurt cobain had and believe me if i had a gun... Bloody walls same mess. anyways. This happend to me since i came off of opiates. I was smoking fetynol patches left and right and smoking this stuff that is better than blacktar have no idea wat it is. In the hospital they do a endoscopy? they had me swallow a tube so they could check out my esophogus. they said I had a hernia. My stomach is a little out of place. Could be the cause of gastroparesis? I dunno. Anyways they did more tests and in the end diagnosed me with gastroparesis. Here's what you need to get from your doctor.

1. Reglan
Reglan is a medicine that stimulates the stomach when it cant on its own.
Reglan helps because theres a certain nerve that is damaged and it is responsible for telling your brain that your stomach is full. Reglan kinda tells your brain to work now!! take 4 a day every 5-6 hours. The weird thing about this drug is that if you use it over a extended period of time you can get muscle spams that last months even years. Be Extra careful with this and talk to your doctor on how to take it.

2. Protonix
Stomach acid reducer
Take once a day, I take it right when i wake up. Sometimes my stomach is soooo sore and damaged it cant handle its own stomach acid. This pill saves me a great amount of pain the main pain that builds up to the f*****g UNBEARABLE PAIN.

And if anyone calls you a puss or stupid cuz of this sh*t, they are ignorant and just tryin to belittle you. Believe me i love smoking pot and have for over 10 years but I may have to quit as well cuz instead of stoney pleasure I get increased Pain... thats y i quit drinkin, and f**k do i love to drink, but maybe its time to just better yourself and f**k the rest.

Thought I'd add my experience to the huge list:

Been smoking daily for about a year. I've been "off the bong" twice and both times resulted in the same uncomfortable digestive pain. It's not a sharp pain for me, but rather a constant ache that sometimes builds to nausea. Appetite is very weak and after eating, I wish I hadn't because of the discomfort. The location of the discomfort is in the lower abdomen, in the area between the belly button and crotch. I keep feeling like I need to poop something out, but hardly anything comes out.

I clicked another link that suggested it may be a 'cancer' problem. That really put quitting herb in perspective. I'm gonna miss the good times. %-)

I think its since ive been smoking marijuana, I dont exactly recall the time it started but i also get stomach pains and im almost positive its from marijuana. but my pains occur in the morning when i first wake up and it usually go away when i take a puff of marijuana and i dont feel like eating untill i take a puff also. happens about 5 days a week. i get the stomache pains in the evening about once a week. im a habitual weed smoker so its kind of hard to quit, especially when 90% of the people around you smoke it but ill give it a try

when you all smoke did your stomach hurt then? or just like a consistent pain throughout the day?

You see, I'm pretty certain I have Gastroparesis, undiagnosed though, for about a year. I don't have stomach pain
just chronic nausea, early satiety and vomiting. However, I find that weed is the best solution for this. It causes me to develop appetite. (Forget about early satiety if you've got the munchies.) and the nausea disappears, and I usually don't vomit. I researched treatments for this disorder and none of the medications avaliable would co-incide with another disorder I have. Weed seems to be the only way out!
