Hi all, I just joined your forum. I would like to tell about my experience with ACV. I started taking apple cider vinegar about 3 months ago, I mix 2 tablespoons of Bragg's ACV with 1/8 teaspoon baking soda. This combination of apple cider vinegar and baking soda diet helps my weight loss. This is alkaling the body and the baking soda keeps the vinegar from taking enamel off your teeth. You can use ph strips to see how alkaline it is, I mix this and let it fizz and then add 4 ounces of water, dosen't taste good, but it works, The Bragg's vinegar has the mother, where you get all your minerals, I take this 3 times a day, 1 hour before meals. At first I didn't see any weight loss, I did research and found out that you might weigh more because it puts the minerals into your bones, but I started seeing a loss of inches, my clothes were getting loose! To date I have lost 20 pounds, have more energy and my joints feel better. This cocktail is recommended 5 days on, 2 days off. They say acid away, pounds away, I am a believer. I help my mother in a herb store and alot of testimonies come in on the ACV with the mother. This is raw, unfiltered vinegar. My acid reflux is gone too! My father=in-law was almost bed ridden, he started on ACV and is now up cutting grass, working in his wood shop and has lost 2 shirt sizes all ready. Hope this helps with the ACV. dry
According to some alternative practices, apple cider vinegar and baking soda are thought to be effective in helping people lose their weight. Before meals, some people do shots of vinegar for weight loss. Others put baking soda into a room temperature water and drink it on an empty stomach.
But the two taken together?
According to SteadyHealth member who initiated this discussion, the better results can be achieved by taking these two ingredients together. She claimed that this combination of apple cider vinegar and baking soda diet helped her weight loss. Others chimed in wanting to know more.
How much have you taken and how long have you been trying it?
The discussion starter was taking apple cider vinegar and baking soda for 3 months. She mixed 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 1/8 teaspoon baking soda, let it fizz and then added 4 ounces of water. Apparently, the baking soda keeps the vinegar from taking the enamel off your teeth. She suggested using ph strips to see how alkaline the mixture is. The mixture didn't taste good, but it worked. The discussion starter took this cocktail 3 times a day, 1 hour before meals. She recommended 5 days on, 2 days off when using the cocktail. At first, she didn't see any weight loss, but eventually, she started seeing a loss of inches on her clothes that were getting loose. After 3 months of use, she had lost 20 pounds, had more energy, and her joints felt better.
Some of the members who responded weren't so convinced that this concoction works, claiming that they need to do a bit of research before daring to do that kind of thing. One of them expressed the worry:
Though I want to lose weight I don't want to do it that way unless I am very sure it is safe. It is the chemical reaction that baking soda and vinegar have together and then drinking that, that I am worried about.
Several other participants reported positive results. According to them, both apple cider vinegar and baking soda have many other health benefits beyond weight loss. Taking baking soda alone with water works great against heartburn. Also, baking soda and water is a laxative and antacid recipe. Being rich in natural minerals, vitamins and enzymes, is what makes apple cider vinegar a great addition to any detox. Taken together they may help with weight loss. Apart from that, apple cider vinegar and baking soda have other benefits for overall health including:
- improving acne, dry skin, rough skin, and many other skin issues
- providing hydration
- helping ease arthritis and pain caused by other factors
- fighting a number of allergies and cold symptoms
According to the participants, apple cider vinegar may aid in weight loss by stabilizing the blood sugar for a longer period and helping to control the appetite. But it should be accompanied with a healthy and balanced diet too. Many recommended that it should be mixed with baking soda and water in the same amount as the discussion starter mentioned. The mixture could be taken once a day, or before each meal. One member recommended taking the cocktail 30 minutes before breakfast and at bedtime.
Many recommended using organic apple cider vinegar such as Bragg Organic Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar.
Cayenne pepper and a dash of honey or syrup are recommended to improve the taste, which apparently isn't so great. Also, many noted that anyone should not expect miracle results, because the mixture is supposed to work gradually and it isn’t a quick fix.
While this mixture worked for the majority, others claimed that they haven't seen any weight loss even after 3 months of use.
Several participants noted that the only major benefit was with their bowel movements. They immediately noticed an improvement and no longer suffered from constipation. It was no diarrhea, just a loose stool that was now daily. Also, they reported feeling better and having a lot more energy.
Instead of using apple cider vinegar and baking soda, one participant suggested others to start low carb, or a Keto style meal plan, which is indeed a good way to lose weight.
What do experts say?
Although many alternative and complementary medicine websites and sources claim that apple cider vinegar and baking soda, combined together, can help with weight loss, the science cannot offer definite proof that supports those claims. Alone, both ingredients may offer some health benefits.
The health benefits of apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar has a long history as a home remedy, used to treat everything from a sore throat to varicose veins. As of recently, some research suggests that apple cider vinegar may have several health benefits, including blood sugar control, improved diabetes, weight management, and improved cholesterol.
A small study found that those who consumed vinegar before eating had lower insulin and triglyceride levels after the meal. A review of several small clinical trials found that people who consumed apple cider vinegar for 8 to 12 weeks experienced small reductions in their blood sugar levels.
A few small studies suggest that apple cider vinegar may help with weight loss, particularly when used along with a low-calorie diet. The researchers also found that those who took apple cider vinegar each day also had a reduced appetite. Another study, however, attributed the loss of appetite to nausea felt after consuming vinegar.
Some evidence also suggests that taking apple cider vinegar could help lower both total cholesterol and triglycerides. The people who took apple cider vinegar also had significantly raised levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, referred to as "good cholesterol."
The health benefits of baking soda
Aside from cooking, baking soda has a variety of health benefits. Baking soda is a natural antacid that can help treat heartburn by neutralizing stomach acid. It may also work as exercise enhancer, because it has a high pH, which may help delay fatigue, allowing people to exercise at their peak for longer. However, there's no clinical evidence that baking soda helps with weight loss.
Mixing apple cider vinegar and baking soda
Adding vinegar to baking soda causes a chemical reaction in which sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is reacted with acetic acid and water (vinegar) releasing carbon dioxide and making sodium acetate (chemical formula C2H3O2Na). The solution in water is a weak base.
Sodium acetate is the sodium salt of acetic acid. It is an inexpensive chemical that has a wide range of practical uses, from petroleum production to food additive. In medicine, sodium acetate solutions treat patients with high blood acid levels and/or low sodium levels. It is also used as a source of sodium ions in solutions for dialysis and as a systemic and urinary alkalizer, diuretic, and expectorant.
In humans, inhalation of sodium acetate may cause a cough and sore throat. Direct skin or eye contact may cause redness and irritation. However, overall, toxicity in humans is minimal.
There is no clinical evidence that sodium acetate promotes or helps losing weight.

Discussion highlights
How people used apple cider vinegar and baking soda?
- I have been using Bragg Organic Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar 2 TBls.
- With 1/8 tsp of Baking soda now for 2 months / 3 times a day.
- I started taking apple cider vinegar about 3 months ago, I mix 2 tablespoons of Bragg's ACV with 1/8 teaspoon baking soda.
- This cocktail is recommended 5 days on, 2 days off.
- I TAKE 1/4 TSP WITH ACV ( BRAGGS VINEGAR ALSO).
- It's only 1 or 2 tap of account to 1/8th of a tap of baking soda.
- 2tbls acv with 1/2tsp baking soda and one cuo water 30mins before breakfast and at bedtime
- I've been drinking 1/2 tsp Bragg's ACV and 1/4 tsp of Arm& Hammer pure baking soda (it does not have aluminum) mixed in 8oz of water 2-3 times day.
- Been drinking 2 tbsp ACV with 1/8 tsp baking soda and 2 tbsp water for 1-2 weeks.
- I have been doing the ACV + water for 3 months.
- I've been taking ( for over 3 years) 1/2 teaspoon (up to 1 teaspoon) per day of Baking Soda + 1 capful ACV & Juice of 1/2 lemon/lime with a glass of water and it has done wonders for me.
What effects have been reported?
- Though I know that when I drink vinegar, which I have tried to stop hiccups *my grandma used to advise thus*, I feel a heartburn like sensation, I doubt that vinegar on its own is so unhealthy for the body.
- To date I have lost 20 pounds, have more energy and my joints feel better.
- Im eating less and im feeling full a lot faster!
- Only side effect may be some diarrhea.
- At first it gave me the runs.
- Got a serious bowel movement.
- No diarrhea, just a loose stool that is now daily.
- I feel great, it also cured a real bad H.Pyroli bacteria I had.

In conclusion
Although many people suggest mixing apple cider vinegar and baking soda with water to help lose some weight, there's no clinical evidence that would support these claims. The best way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume through exercise and healthy diets.
