I been getting pain in my jaw from drinking wine for years now. It starts below my ears and extends all the way down the side of my face on both sides. It's now happening with other alcohol too and only takes a few sips before the pain begins. I searched many times to find and anwer on the web. This is the 1st time I've seen anyone else mention it. I too have Fibromyalgia. How many others have this correlation? Any info. is appreciated.
I'm getting jaw pain from alcohol too. It used to be from wine only but has not started with just a few sips of beer or other alcohol. it goes from under my ears all the way down my face on both sides. I have Fibromyalgia too. Does anyone else have this connection? Any info. is appreciated!
Huh I thought I was unique in this or my doctor thought so saying he had never heard of it. I only get the pain when I drink wine. Just like the others the pain starts right below the ear and runs down my jaw.
This happens every single time I drink wine these days. Which is why i stopped drinking it. No other form of drink causes me to get these pains.

*As 'Guest' explained on page 6, I think, the commonality here is DEHYDRATION. The jaw muscle is small and all of your jaw muscles are different from... well everybody elses. ;-) You all live different lives and you all hydrate differently and each person hydrates differently each day. Yet here we all are with a SIMILAR problem. Its probably going to be one of the first muscles to lose water and react harshly to stimuli in that condition. :-| My conclusion is that it is not a disease or syndrome, just 'one o those things'.
Every now and again I experience a little twinge here, a sharp jab there or a slight tingle here... etc. I think to myself 'Hmmm, that was freakish' and think nothing more of it. Im 36 and I cant remember when the jaw pain started or what I was eating/drinking when it happened. I just figured it was similar to one of those twinges; it happens, 'Dammit, could that pain be any more annoying?', the pain tapers off and goes away and Im on to my next thought. Well after that we all end up going in one direction or another. Is it this, could it be that, it was nothing, 'For the life of me I will find out what this affliction is and speak of it at major malls and big events to raise awareness ! '
The doctors look at you like youre a crazy hypochondriac (sp?) because they arent expecting one to report every twinge, cramp or tingle. I am not a doctor :'( but I did read all of the posts and thought, I too, am experiencing... well, pretty much the same thing but slightly different, ya know what I mean?
As I was reading and realizing the common links, i.e. alcohol, eating, dehydration, I figured :-| 'Cool, its not just me. Oh right, now that I think about it, I remember getting that cramp in my jaw sometimes 1st thing in the morning when I drink... anything and sometimes after I been drinkin' (with a little smirk on my face) or even when I take a bite of something after that long stint of not moving my mouth. And sometimes its worse than other times and sometimes I dont remember it 'happening or not happening' with the same thing each time. But when I DO remember, it always SEEMS to be with the same thing... %-)
Right?...right?... hah?....

Man, I've been wondering about this on and off for awhile now! Have periodically searched the web for an answer and never found anything til now. Thanks, finally, google.
o.O
Happens to me mostly with dark drinks like wine, rum, whisky .. don't drink beer, but sounds like if I did I'd have the same problem. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does it's very sudden and disturbing!
I've mentioned to friends that I think I'm allergic to alcohol b/c of this weird pain but was always met with disbelief (especially when mentioning it after a few drinks lol)
At first I was thinking tannins too, but so far can't find anything to confirm that theory.
Not sold on the dehydration thing, but I will keep it in mind and try some water in the future! If it was dehydration wouldn't we feel this pain at other times w/o alcohol? And what about those who only experience with certain kinds of alcohol?
I would agree with others who said it can feel like when you blow of balloon up to hard/fast. Location-wise for the pain happens on both sides of face where ear and jaw meet up.

wisdom teeth still in place

I had the same symptoms as you all, though I'm surprised no one has mentioned smoking a little sweet cheeba. Pain goes away instantly and makes you laugh at the Hodgkins theory.
Good luck!
Good luck!
Well it's good to know that I'm not alone. I get the same symptom mostly when drinking red wine. It started a few years back. To me it almost feels like a muscle cramp. I still drink wine occasionally though :-)
I can't really buy into the dehydration theory because I only experience this problem with certain types of alcohols. To add to that, this only began happening about 4-5 years after I began drinking. I have no clue what this is or how to deal with it. I tried the who, "just drink some water to make it go away" but that doesn't really work. The pain does go away but it isn't immediate. Therefore, I really don't think it has anything to do with the water. I mean, the pain will disappear after about 15-30 mins on its own...so the water doesn't have anything to do with it.
I wish some doctor would chyme in on this and tell us what the issue is. People are surprised to even hear of it and they sure as hell don't believe it.

I hope there is a name for this thing.. Because of this I can't drink anything alcoholic and some non-alcoholic drink like some fruit juices do this to me.
The pain starts out like sharp needles near my jaw in the soft spot of my ear and then worsens when I swallow, shooting the pain down my jaw.
On a few occasions I have had it cause twinges and slight pain in my neck.
It doesn't matter what alcohol I drink it does this. Some sour things will do this too. Mixing the two like a lime after a shot of Tequila will cause pain so bad I nearly black out.
I drink maybe once a year or perhaps ever two.. but every once in a while I will take a few sips to see if the pain comes on and it always does.
I will try the water thing but I would hope someone out there knows what this is...

I myself have the pain in the jaw and it is ONLY when I drink alcohol and only certain alcolholic drinks-I cannot drink certain dark drinks. This pain is a radiating very dull and deep jaw pain. I have often wondered if it is connected with the heart because as you drink it goes into your blood stream. In a heart issue the first thing that has pain is your jaw. I do not believe this is a dehrydration issue as I have had nights of drinking that I did not get this pain but got a hangover which is due to dehydration. So I believe that theory is null and void. I think it must be allergy to something in certain alcohols. I've experienced this paid with Rum and Kahlua are the two I have pin pointed so far as I don't drink beer. Hopefully someone will look into this as it is very painful and kinda scary when it happens.
I am 23 years old, and I have been experiencing some discomfort in my left ear after drinking a sip of any alcoholic drink. I keep searching the internet, and all I can find are articles on Hodgkin's. I talked to my doctor a few weeks ago, and they tested my blood count. The results came back, and my blood count was actually above average. My doctor said I may be "allergic to alcohol." I was given an antibiotic for my earache, and it eventually went away.
I went to a restaurant tonight with a friend, and I sipped a very small amount of his beverage. I almost immediately felt a tingle in my left ear. That was about three hours ago, and I'm now beginning to feel the usual discomfort I experience.
I feel lost in this dilema. Why are there not more facts and figures on the issue at hand? Why does my own doctor shrug his shoulders in confusion and makes a guess at an allergy that I may or may not have to alcohol? I was under the impression that we are in an advanced age of medicine. To me, there should be a black and white answer to my symptoms. Any hints or ideas?

I have also had this for years, but not often. This week, I am having it daily. Right now, I am having it, and all I have had is coffee with artificial creamer. However, my allergies are flared up now with a lot of drainage.
In the past, I have felt it with alcohol, but also after eating certain tomato/pizza sauces and salad. I believe it is a food allergy/intolerance. One thing I saw online was a salicylate allergy/intolerance.
If it is food allergy, it would likely be worse when you are already having airborne allergies, as your system will get "overloaded".
I wish I could pinpoint the exact ingredient so I could avoid it.

Well, this may sound strange, but I know that yeast exists within alcohol. The other day, a friend came over for dinner and we had yeast rolls. Almost instantly, I could feel the back of my throat begin to have a "swelling" effect. Is it possible that yeast is causing these allergic reactions? I have never experienced a food allergy until now.
I'd like to join the cramped jaw pain club. My doctor also suggested an allergy to some yeast or preservative used in alchohol because not every drink has the same affect on me. Love to see a proper study into this!
It's not our imagination or dehydration. It has something to do with the lymph nodes. I have had it with margarita & mexican food restaraunt, and I've had it with red wine w/ sea food. Just under the lower corners of my jaw there was on each side a tiny area of excruciating pain, like something was going to explode, x10 pain level. I felt little hard swollen spots where the most pain was. I believe there are lymph nodes there, aren't there?
