That is good to hear! Considering that when I first read your story I thought all my god I've been dealing with this for the last year-and-a-half I got staph infection from my mother who has stage 4 cancer and the pseudo skin the thick skin that peels off is almost calloused on my lips now and I'm going to try what you tried because I've tried everything else my lips peel and bleed and sting and burn my own saliva burns them they get to the point where when I try to eat my mouth rips constant it's ugly it's horrible and so I'm going to try what you tried and hopefully it will take the calluses on my lip down son because it looks disgusting. I mean after a year-and-a-half of dealing with this my bottom lip is just completely callesto I was afraid they were going to have to skin graph it but I will ask my doctor

So im honestly not sure if anybody is checking this anymore but I've been afflicted with this for well over a month and FINALLY went to patient first and hospital yesterday. About two weeks after it started, I treated with probiotics and clotrimazole, had some laying around from kids. It seemed to help but the break outs kept coming back. After I hit the month mark and my lips swoll to the point where they actually split, yes they did and it was tremendously painful, was when I went to patient first and hospital. I'm not on prednisone, acyclovir, grisefunval, azithromycin, norco(for pain), plus clotrimazole and triple antibiotic ointment. Essentially because my regular meds, I'm taking 11 pills a day. This was after trying everything OTC, lavender, coconut oil, olive oil, 9 different chapstiks, Vaseline, aquaphor, benedryl, literally everything. And my ER doctor said he's never seen anything like it. I've followed up with my PCP and I'm getting a blood test and biopsy next. But I'll keep y'all updated. This was the first board I found where people didn't assume it was herpes or just really chapped lips.

I'm still reading it....I seem to have had a minor issue right after I went to the dentist (this past Thursday)and they tried to rip my face apart....seemed like the next day I started getting REALLY chapped lips and redness around my lips I immediately started using the muricin that my skin Dr. prescribed me and ONLY Vaseline (Dr. suggested to not use anything else) and it never got the point where they were swollen and cracked up like before but as of today they are still very chapped but I think I nipped the complete takeover of my lips in the bud. I will use this treatment for any further cases....oh and I really only used the muricin a couple of times, I probably could have been a little more diligent but that's just me :| MRP

Hey guys,
'In the same boat' sufferer here.
I won't bore you with my symptoms other than constant chapping / peeling, redness around the lips, burning, tightness etc etc. No lesions as such ... but fordyce spots (according to the derm) become more inflamed with irritation, hence there are some teeny tiny spots around the edges of my lips when the skin is stretched.

My question to you guys, who have managed to snip this thing in the bud, is about the duration of treatment.
I've tried a number of anti-fungals and low potency steroids, but have discontinued after two weeks of use.
(Needless to say none were effective!)

In your experience, can it take longer to respond? Should I have persevered?

Much love to you all. This is a debilitating condition to live with. :-(

Did the Emovate work for you? I've been using it for a week ... whilst there is slight relief of the discomfort the issue still very much remains. Perhaps a 10% improvement at the most.

I have been using the mupirocin topical and it has cured the worst of events in a matter of days...taste like c**p but I'm fine with that :)

Did you get a diagnosis or just source the mupirocin yourself? From what I've read it's an antibacterial and not a steroid isn't it ....?
If you don't mind me asking, what were your symptoms and how long had you suffered?
I've literally been putting up with this for 9 months!

I did get a diagnosis, and it came back like a staph infection, the derm said Staph is everywhere, I could have gotten it from something as simple as picking my nose :|
My symptoms initially started at the end of a hunting trip in mid October with severe chapped lips that were sore and read around the rim, I am prone to weather related severe chapped lips so I really didn't think anything of it but then I started getting the cracks in my lips which led me to think it was Angular cheilitis so I started using an antifungal medication which basically did nothing, soon after the cracks came the blisters (small) but surrounding the lining of my entire lips and they basically acted just like herpes (which by the way you can get herpes 1 AND 2 on both your lips or genital area) ooozing then crusting SO..I thought it may have been a cold sore outbreak and tried every application I could for that ..abreva..lysine everything I read that would help.. and nothing really helped, after over a MONTH of my lips being embarrassingly nasty, I finally went to the dermatologist to get a culture (I HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO EVERYONE TO DO THIS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND DON'T WAIT UNTIL IT IS CLEARING UP) he said it had signs of staph and gave me the mupirocin and within a week they were basically back to normal. I have had a severe outbreak again after that and had to call the Derm again to see what they prescribed because I have many things laying around the house, I started taking it diligently and again within a week I was basically back to normal.
Now, as soon as my lips get to the point where I have that severe chapping and red rim around them I start applying the Mupirocin and it has never gotten past that point so far.
Take heed that my initial altercation from this could have been a combination of everything which is possible and obviously harder to attack and diagnose so that is why I recommend getting a culture as soon as you have a break out.
I hope this help because I know how horrible this is not too mention embarrising, no one like sores on there face :(

I think one of the main problems is Drs these days just try to take the most easy route...you have cracks in your lips its fungal..here have a Rx...you have blisters on your lips its a cold sore here have some Valtrex... Do your selves a favor and request/demand a culture be taken.

OH and by the way my Derm said use NOTHING ELSE but Vaseline so I'm taking it from him and doing so and I'll be honest it's what my grandmother used for EVERYTHING and I forgot how amazing it actually is!

Wow, thanks so much. Sounds scarily similar to my own issues!
I may take things into my own hands if the derm won't play ball and source some mupirocin myself!!

Has anyone's lips gotten worse with alcohol? Everytime after I drink alcohol, the next more I get teeny tiny pimples all over my top lip. I mean all over. I could run my finger over it like bubble wrap and pop them. It's very gross. Then it peels for about a week. I am scared to drink alcohol again. Any suggestions?

I don't blame you..

I thought that may have been my problem after my hunting trip...consumed my fair share of alcohol, but I have since been quite intoxicated with no effects. It also could be an immune system thing, my mouth is the first thing that tells me if I am getting sick in any manner..flu, common cold, whatever
