Dear Guest, did the swelling ever subside? I'm currently going through the sane thing.

Scrotal swelling is common. My surgery was oct 5 and my surgeon told me it would happen, not that it might happen but that it would and would eventually return to normal. Since your husband had bilateral repair which means repair of left and right inguinal hernias he most certainly would get temporary scrotal swelling.

Had hernia surgery right side. was my third surgery and first time I had the swelling. Was painful first and second day but just kept them on Ice. Was pretty freaked out that evening after surgery when my right testicle swelled to tennis ball size. But the ice and Ibruprofen seemed to help. Day three tested the equipment and everything is working meaning i masturbated. My penis did get some blood settled in from the erection but I guess I just wanted to verify all was well with operational aspects. The seems to be alot of brusing from the blood. I think the hospital and Dr should have better prepared me for the swelling as for a guy it freaks you out alot. None of the pamphlets given to me post surgery discussed this effect at all. New about the blood into the penis from erection due to previous surgery. Have been up and around more and more each day this is day 4 and feeling very normal accept balls are still very large and the bruising but that the equipment is all well put my mind at ease.

I'm 53.  I recently had a large inguinal hernia repaired by open mesh surgery under spinal anaesthetic.  It went well, and I came home the same day.  I first noticed the hernia at 14 (sports injury), but had no real problems with it until a couple of months ago.  By the time of the operation, the hernia was officially categorised as "large".

Reading here, lots of guys seem to be very worried by their own experiences of hernia surgery.

Relax, folks.  Any incision is going to generate fluid.  This can only drain out, and gravity will take effect, so and liquid will first go downwards.  What's there? Your penis and scrotum!  Mine grew to three or four times their normal size, which might have been fun, but wasn't (although I did take photographs!).  I never had a penis that could accommodate both hands before.  It was an interesting experience (sigh!).

Anyway, after 12 days, everything reduced to normal size.   I can now retract my foreskin, and my other half has been kind enough to relieve my frustration, orally.  No problem, much enjoyment, and huge volume!  Bladder sensation (after spinal) fully restored after 2 days, bowel back to normal after 7 days.  Never been constipated for 7 days in my life, but it was OK.  Been off my feed after the op, so that probably helped.

I still have some pain in the area of the incision, but no infection/inflammation, and I can see that in another couple of weeks, things will be absolutely fine.

All I can say is, so long as you have no obvious infection, don't worry.  Things will work out.  Swelling is normal, if incredibly uncomfortable and painful.  Try and get up, and move around as much as you can.

Yes, having a huge scrotum is difficult, but the more you move, the more your lymph system will help disperse the excess fluid.  Support your dangly bits with a jock strap or some tight-fitting briefs.  They will help.  And don't be too proud to take pain pills.  I used tramadol and paracetamol for 8 days.  Whatever you do, keep the drug levels up, and don't let the pain get ahead of the meds.

Within 2 weeks all should be fine.  To start with, I regretted having the op, but after 16 days, I'm glad I did it.  God bless the British NHS.

I just had my surgery 2 days ago. Right open inguinal (sp?). My penis at the base to half way up was engorged. Discoloration too, but not black. Called the doctor and said it was normal and would not cause lasting damage. Fluid and gravity. More ice and meds. Also laying down more. Would have been nice if warned. Seriously why no warning? Obviously concerned enough to have found this site and now a little less concerned. Sill waiting for the bowel movement without being able to push.

Thanks to all who posted before me.

I had my right inguinal hernia surgery done 5 days ago, December 10, 2012.  OK, maybe math doesn't work.  That was Monday, this is Friday.  I expected to be in pain but was surprised when it subsided 1 1/2 days post surgery.  I have a lot of pain pills left over.  I had sever swelling around the site and blood accumulation in the scrotum and penis.  That scared me.  Still scares me.  But, after reading these posts I now feel that its normal so I won't panic.  My follow up visit with the surgeon is for this upcoming Tuesday.  My wife is also very supportive..."suck it in"...says she.  No whining.    This is my third hernia operation.  Compared to the colectomy I had done 6 years ago, this was a piece of cake. I'm 72.

Glad I'm not alone with the bruising! A pig part of my scrotum is black, and it's been 5 days since hernia surgery with mesh, so I think now i'll wait a few more days and see how it goes. No swelling, and not much pain, so I'm lucky there.

Anyone here have a followup with end result?

Had laparoscopic bilateral inguinal hernia surgery 6 weeks ago.  Everything was great the first 2.5 days, then the swelling apeared.  Having a grapefruit down there was NOT something I was warned about!  All I was told is I "might" have some swelling after, but no mention of location.  I assumed the entry points.  Boy was I nieve...

I've seen the doctor 3 times after surgery (every 2 weeks) and this last time he set the next appointment 4 weeks out.  He says it will reduce over time, but I'm already at 6 weeks.  I see sites claiming 3-9 months!  God I hope not.  Doc says he will do an ultrasound if it hasn't improved at the next appointment; 10 weeks post surgery.

So, how long did it take for all of you for the swelling to go away and return to normal?  Or did it evolve into a lifetime pain/swelling thing like I keep reading about?

All I can says is it would have been nice to get much more accurate information up front...

I have exact problem too but mine is day 4 and I am so worried.please don't hesitate to publish your outcome as soon as u see your doctor like my own doctor said "your body will absorb it within 4weeks "and I looked at him like "woow" 4 dam weeks with swollen testics.I just hope it will be over by then because I had a better relief before the surgery only that one cannot live with the sore throughout his lifetime......my name is Gazal,34years old!

Laproscopic Bi-lateral Inguinal Hernia Repair with Mesh

Just returned from the doctor for my 10 week follow up like the prior poster (2 months and 2 weeks).  I still have swelling that varies between a baseball and tennis ball, with testies inside the sack still swollen from original size, as all the wrappings around them.  In addition, the right testicle remains drawn up tight against my body and doesn't want to drop back to its' proir normal position.  Only regular ache/pain at the top of the right testicle and what feels like the other end of the inguinal tube.  This concerns me.

Started 3 days a week on the tread mill at the gym last week without problems and the doctor gave me the okay to start my normal gym workouts.

The doctor claims my continued problem issues are just swelling and will go away over time.  I will believe that when everything returns to normal!  Next scheduled appointment is in 2 months (18-20 weeks).

I thought I had it bad till I read some of your post's. I had my right side done with mesh on a Tuesday and its now Friday. No swelling or brusing but still having a lot pain while getting up or walking around. I'm hoping this is just normal. Had my second poop since surgery this morning and I still wake up with a stiffy both are a relief to me. Haven't masterbated yet like some other chap had said so I'll leave that chore up to my wife in due time. I'll be glad when things do return to normal as it is boring as hell lying around doing nothing.

Left side inguinal hernia repair 20 days ago. Still have swelling in left testicle, still have skin numbness below the incision.

Doctor says both are normal, numbness should go away over time. He says the swelling is normal too, but it is very concerning after 20 days.
