I so agree with all the comments made. These posts are not only informative but made me laugh at a time when I was really concerned about my signs and symptoms. I had a left inguinal hernia repair a couple of days ago. The surgeon warned me to expect some scrotal bruising, but no warning that the scrotum would become swollen, and that the loose skin around the penis would also become swollen and bruised. It just looks so weird. I would describe my symptoms as discomfort rather than pain, in my lower abdomen. Fortunately I can still pee without problems, but I have to haul the swollen skin out of the way first. It is very reassuring to hear about your experiences in the USA. I live in the UK, but clearly we all suffer with the same sort of problems. I will try to keep the scrotum raised if possible, to speed recovery and am contemplating installing a pulley on the bedroom ceiling.
Thanks again guys and every good wish for speedy recoveries.
Glad to see my symptoms are run of the mill. I had laparoscopic right inguinal hernia repair with mesh 17 years ago and as memory serves...recovery was miserable at the age of 16. This time, 3 days ago, I had open repair of left inguinal hernia using native tissue, no mesh.
Post Op day 1 I went to my nephew's Baptism and walked around more than i should have. I took the Lortab (Hydrocodon/Acetaminophen 10mg/325mg) tablets 1 every 4 hours (while awake) as prescribed and used ice except for when walking. I took one stool softener (colace aka docusate sodium) that day and started having some gas, good sign the bowels are moving again after surgery.
Post Op Day 2 I paid for my movement the day before, still swelling and pain at the surgical site as well as left testicle so i stayed home and learned again why I vowed to never laugh, cough, sneeze or otherwise use abdominal muscles post hernia repair 17 years ago...dear God the pain is real...I switched to just Acetaminopehen 500mg tabs every 4 hours.
Post Op Day 3 I became concerned about the increase in testicular cord swelling so I switched to ibuprofen and back to ice. Reread my notes from the surgeon and remembered he said I would particularly have bad swelling...the reason J don't recall.
As for pain, the surgical site is sore but the testicular cord swelling causes more discomfort than the op site when walking... pillows DON'T help me with coughing, that seems to be a cruel misnomer....hoping this nightmare ends soon...
Of course its going to swell, think of the trauma its just undergone! The Spermatic cord is trying to pull that big boy back up as well. There's going to be some massive swelling and soreness.
No one panic. keep ice on and off every 20 minutes, ( through cloth of course, don't just throw an ice pack on bare skin. ) Try to walk around when you can, get some sort of laxative... your going to need it, STAY AWAY from any carbonated drinks, ( get some sort of juice, ex. I love V8 splash and cran- palmigranite. ( I'm sure id spelled that incorrectly ) anything with a lot of Vit.C definitly helps, because your going to start fighting off a cold soon. ) and make sure you get something to eat loaded with fiber. ( our bodies are now in repair mode. we're going to burn up a lot of energy just being on the mend. )
I had bilateral inguinal open surgery on August 28,2017 with mesh.. I had massive swelling in my testicles and scrotum. Day 8 & 9 it reduced to about 1.5x normal size, but, day 10, it returned to at least double size. The incision site is sensitive, sore and very hard. I had a follow up on Sept. 12 with my surgeon. He assured me that all of my symptoms are normal and that everyone heals differently. In my case, he said that it would be normal to expect at least 3 months of time to pass before I would see swelling to reduce to normal. He said to walk, no lifting for at least 2-4 more weeks and that "passive sex" is OK. He did not even look at my body or incision site because I described my symptions and conditions and he had no concerns. Hang in there guys !
