For the past few months, my fingertips feel like the skin has thinned and are painful. It thought maybe it was an allergy to something so I only use olive oil-based soap and use gloves when I wash dishes.
It's as if I've been in a bath and they feel like prunes.
It started right after I got my ovaries removed to reduce my breast cancer risk. I have read the the skin can thin dramatically and nails become weak after menopause.
Anyone else experienced this?
thank you,
Eileen

I have found that certain foods will trigger cracking and peeling. (A nutritionist once told me it was my body's ph and food combinations will affect the ph.) Mayonaisse will create painful cracking and peeling for months. If I eat jello or gelatin, it feels like needles are being jabbed into my cuticles. Oily cheeses, some chocolates, most muffins, bottled salad dressings, chips-a-hoy (my fave), greasy potato chips and popcorn, chicken soup, are just a few of the foods that will crack and peel my fingertips.
lotions and salves will temporarily soothe the pain of the dryness, but avoiding the foods that cause the problem is the only real solution.

@Shiflet: the gelatin capsule that contains the vitamin E, like any Jello or gelatin, will crack my fingertips very badly.
If I take a prescription that is dispensed in gelatin caps, I must empty the contents of the capsule into apple sauce, so as not to consume the gelatin capsule!

For about two years (I think, I haven't been counting) I have had a similar problem with my fingers. It is mainly on my left pinkie finger, but there has also been a less serious problem on my left index finger and right pinkie, as well as a more subtle problem with most of the other digits. The skin on the finger (not the tips though) goes really hard and cracks if I bend it, really painfully, and will usually bleed, and then it will appear to heal for a bit before it goes hard again. I'm only 14, I live in the UK and I don't know what could be causing this. It makes things really difficult, as when the finger is hard it hurts too much to bend it, and this hampers what I can do at these times. Does anyone know what it is, and how it can be cured? Thank you so much, if I can fix it it will really improve my life.

Hi! i had the same problem and i think i might be able to help you too!
its normal to have that peeling of your fingertips.
because when i was 11, i just remembered putting on some rash, bumps, and cuts cream. its a big tub, with whipped cream, in it. not really whipped cream! but like it. so try smoothing it on your fingertips where it is peeling off, and then keep pulling it off every few days.
it worked once for me, so maybe it will work for you.
Try doing it everyday with the cream, and smoothing it in where the skin is peeling off your fingertips.
Hope this works for you like it did for me! if it didn't, i have another idea you can try. just comment if it doesn't work.
Thank You!

Hi, I know how painfull this is because I had it for the last 5 years. I am finally back to normal! Check the products you are using for SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate/Sulfectant). SLS is a foaming agent in shampoos, soaps, cleansers and even toothpaste. Please google it for more info...it is a known carcinogen. I found relief within 24 hours. Staying away from anything with SLS in it has dramatically changed my life and health. Best of luck
PS....Jerks who don't understand the pain don't need to read or respond on this topic...GET A LIFE!

hello. I know it has been a long time, but has anyone been able to break this cycle? I experience the same problem as most of you. Mine stopped for about one year and now it started again. I am currently applying Lotrimin. It looks and feels like a fungus problem so I am treating it like one. please help.

HI, thanks for your post. What company makes "Handshield"/where do you buy it? thx, pvturtle

Yes , I have chewed my nails too. I kind of came to the conclusion also that my problem started from
nail chewing and chewing the skin off the tip of the left thumb. Maybe it allowed a fungus to get under
the skin. Tried a lot of creams and lotions, but can't stop the condition from coming back for about
a year now. Hope this helps you.

I have done so much research on this and I have come to the conclusion that it is something internal that is hey wired. Maybe an allergic reaction to something. I have been to two different dermatologist and an allergy specialist. I have used so many different steriod creams (even the most potent one there is) Some things work for a while but then it is like it builds up an immune to what ever I am using. I am currently using the strongest one they make (Clobetasol Propionate) and taking a allegra every night and they seem to be better. I read that you can drink a half of cup of water with 2 table spoons of apple cider vinegar and it has helped people. I did that too for about a week and then thought I would die from the cure before I did from the sickness. Maybe that being in my system even though I quit drinking it is what has helped. I personally think it is some kind of hormone imbalance. I haven't suggested that to any of the doctors that I have seen because I think they may think I am one of these ones that diagnosed myself via the internet. Good luck and please please please if you find something that works for you, share it with everybody. I am always open to try something I haven't tried before.

My finger tips have been peeling since last year. I think I have finally figured out why. Last year I bought rubber work gloves for doing yard work. I also frequently wear latex gloves at work. I think I have developed an allery to rubber. I have heard of people that are allergic to latex, think condoms. I hope this helps some of you.
