Jumped into this discussion a year after it was started.  I've had this problem on and off for 30 years.  It feels as if it's on/in my carotid artery but ultrasound shows no remarkable plaque buildup and I was 35 when it began.  I am a trained lyric soprano, did a LOT of professional singing, and that's when it started:  a sore spot, almost like a tonsil pain (I still have my tonsils) but it's not an infection and it's not in my tonsils, it's to the left of the thyroid gland but NOT the thyroid gland.  It hasn't bothered me for a long time but it is NOW.  Years ago I had the camera thing down the throat, MRI, and last year had an ultrasound of carotids and thyroid, no one has ever found any abnormality.  I think it's deep muscle tissue due to strain.  I started singing again after a long hiatus and pushed myself last Saturday, two days later: bam.  Nothing that lasts for 30 years can be deadly lol.  But it IS a PAIN IN THE NECK, and let's see how much of THAT is stress and subconscious suggestion??????  Use Advil (sparingly) at night and rest your voice.  Be careful how you sleep (pressure makes it hurt the next day: the ultrasound caused it).  It will go away.  Of course, always have stuff like this checked out to be sure it's benign.

My situation is very similar.  I started feeling it like a month ago.  It occurs on the left side of my adams apple 1 cm or 2 up.  Its like a muscle pain or but it still hasn't gone away.  Its a mild discomfort that only really bothers me when i swallow and its not the pain you get before getting a cold virus.  I also get up once or twice in the middle of the night every day for my baby.

I was thinking maybe if it is muscle, it's not healing because i dont get enough hours of sleep.  Who knows.  Anyone have any diagnosis?

thx

Hi,

Great write up. I have similar issue. Just wondering if the pills and diet has helped and how long did it take to start feeling relief?

Thanks,

I have the exact symptoms for 6 weeks now and it is driving me nuts. I have been to an ENT Dr. Who sent me for a thyroid ultrasound. Everything came back normal but the pain is stll there. I especially feel it when I swallow. It feels like something is compressing my throat. I also can pinpoint the spot but cannot feel any swelling or localize it due to the fact it is deep in my neck. It is not in my throat and I am getting the clicking and popping also when I turn my neck. Were you ever able to diagnose your symptoms?

i just left my doctor for this exact thing and I am being scheduled for an ultrasound immediately and put on baby asprin to prevent clots. I started off with an ear infection that was so bad it took me to hospital and now the ear is fine and its been 3 weeks. My left side of my neck has been ever increasing in size and has become extremely painful. Dr. found a sore spot right over the carotid artery where it pulses and was immediately alarmed.

You may have carotid artery or coronary artery issues and may want to have your blood checked and the affected area as well. I don't think its something you should ignore especially if it is very painful. I think our bodies tolerate a lot of pain even when we shouldn't.

Following my previous post, I had the pain for about a month. It did not get better nor wrose and yet one morning I awoke and it was not there. That was about a month ago and it has yet to return so hopefully some of you will have the same experience?

I get something similar to this every time I catch a cold. Lately, I get this even when I'm not sick. My naturopath (whose an MD too) told me it was an deep ear infection/dysfunction. An Eustachian tube dysfunction. It can happen because you have a rare condition in which your Eustachian tube is always open or individually, yours can be slightly mishapen (I'm in the latter category). I don't know what it is in your case - but if your throat looks fine on other tests and it isn't your thyroid ask your doctor to run investigations on your Eustachian tube. It isn't common - but it happens.

Oh, and there's nothing you can do about it (Eustachian tube dysfunctions), but try and keep your ears clean and dry while keeping your immune system up with Vit C and Vit D. At least, my naturapath tells me. I guess there's some sort of surgery... But Vitamins help me and I don't get it anymore sick or well.

Was in the Er last night for the same thing last night. The first time I felt the left neck pain, in the corner of where the big tendon in my mandible, was a month ago. It had me in tears last night. They just gave me pain med, referred me to an Ent, and sent me home. No answers!!!!! This is frightening

I have for the third time, what feels like, an abscess in my carotid artery. I can palpate the exact spot. The pain increases, over several days, until it feels like its going to explode, not something you want to feel in your carotid. Then it gets suddenly better. The first time I went to the ER, it was late and I thought my carotid was exploding. They made me feel like i was nuts and/or seeking drugs, which I told them from the beginning, I didn't want. To placate me they auscultated the artery, not hearing a brut, they sent me packing.

The second time, I called an ENT doc, since I was a new pt, I couldn't get in for several weeks. I knew it would be healed by that time but I went anyway. He gave me the name for it, I don't remember it (sorry), told me that he didn't believed it really existed until he experienced it himself and to call him the next time it happen so he could sono it. I call him yesterday (Thursday 11/29/12), he can't get me in until Monday. By then, it may have done it's thing and there will be nothing to see but at the least I will get it's name. I'll post it so everyone with strange neck pain can check it out. Check out TMJ too. Some of you described it to a T. May you find answers and healing.

I have these symptoms too. I can live with the condition but was worried that it might be something more sinister. Otherwise my general condition is great.

I have been suffering from pain in and around my throid(adam's apple) for about 6 weeks now. I was sick and got rid of the infection without antibiotics. The last part of that infection was laryngitis. I saw an ENT and he said if it is getting better, leave it be. Well since then, it has gotten much worse. The pain is like a band around into my back.(neck) I called to get another appointment with the ENT next week. I have Barett's esophogus and lots of mucous. SO, I will also see my gastro to see if it could be that....Pretty nervous about all of this. I hope next week will give me some answers. Have you received any anwers?
