i'm on my second repair from an incisional hernia right underneath my rib cage breastbone. the repair was in may with mesh. the swelling would not be an issue if it was not right underneath my breastbone so it push's up into my rib cage and is extremely painful , i'm pretty active so the more active i am the more i swell and the more i'm in pain. i dont see how this can be normal after so long .

I know this post was a long time ago but thought my insight on hernias might help any newcomers looking for information on the net. Having had 2 incisional hernia repairs with mesh in 3 months. To prevent the swelling that occurs following after all incisional(ventral) hernias especially where mesh is used, I suggest you wear an abdominal girdle immediately after surgery. This was suggested by my surgeon and I put it on immediately after surgery this time(operation last week)while still in hospital and with a drain. I will keep this on for 3 months. The swelling is still visible but much less and gives the abdomen support.
Absolutely no lifting, bending forward, exercise that involves abdominal muscles, even vacuuming should be done with care. These ops have a reputation for failing so the more you do to make things stable at the beginning the better.

I had a huge umbilical hernia. Began as a child and a penny was placed over this until I was about 98 when it was obvious the protrusion was not going away. My parents did not allow me to be operated on and over the years the hernia became larger and the base bigger. By the time I was pregnant at 23 the hernia was so large and so painful that I could not touch it and it hurt to bend or stretch. I saw a specialist on the advise of my doctor who removed my entire navel leaving a massive scar down my whole belly.Since then I have had three smaller but more painful hernias repaired around where my navel used to be. Now for the past 3 - 4 years I have pain in the area where the navel used to be even though I have no actual belly button. It hurts if I strain or stretch and a lump appears to be getting larger in the area. I am loathe to have to go through another operation and cannot understand why I should be getting this all the time after so many operations. Anyone have an answer to this or been in the same situation. the original hernia was protruding 14 centimeters from my skin and was purple at the base and swollen.

Hi. I have the very same problem. I had my surgery 10 days ago. I have the ridge but also extreme sensitivity to the skin around base of penis and also inside of thigh. I am in such pain that the Vicodin does not help, I'm not sure if I should warm or cold compress the area. I had to return to work, or lose my job, but wearing clothes is so difficult. Sitting is painful and entire area has a burning sensation. I am so disappointed as I usually heal quickly, and reasonably healthy,. I am totally downhearted, anyone know if I should compress or put a cream or ointment on the irritated area, obviously not on the incision site. Thank you very much Timothy

Neilly, I was curious as to whether your issue was ever addressed. I too had the same hernia surgery as you and I am experiencing the same thing. Please respond if you can.

The swelling could be caused by a blood clot that's formed between the repair and the skin as I had it with mine an doctors just told me it would gradually go 12 months later it was still there so demanded a second opinion as soon as next doctor see it sent me for scans and that lead to a second op to remove it, 8 months on and everything's fine now.

I am a female too and had femoral hernia surgery 7 months ago. My scar is half way puffy and it itches at times. I haven't seen the doctor for this. whenever I press the area I have pain, but must say the pain has subsided gradually.
