white chunks on tonsils

I have been experiencing a recurrence of white chunks on my tonsils. They often cause discomfort to me. Also their texture resembles the white part of a popcorn kernel. I wonder what those white chunks are caused by. Do they maybe indicate some serious illness?

I have the same problem I've always wondered what it was!!! Good to know its nothing serious! For me it only comes every once n awhile but it is super gross and the smell ugh! I have nails so for me I just stick my finger in there & scrape the stuff out with my index finger nail
They are called tonsil stones.  It's food debris and bacteria that catch on your tonsils.
I'm so glad I'm not alone! I am so self-concious about my breath and I spend a good 15 minutes every morning and night finding new and creative ways of getting these little buggers out. My left tonsil has an oval hole in it that is easily 1 1/5 cm (my tonsils are HUGE) at it's longest diameter.  I get strep constantly and you can actually see the swelling from the outside on a regular basis. I just lost my insurance and my mother and boyfriend were begging me to get my tonsils out before I no longer had insurance. I'm an idiot and should have done so! I found garggling warm water mixed with hydrogen peroxide and salt helps loosen everything up and then I use a q-tip with peroxide to clean them all over and dig some of them out of the giant hole. I think the bobby pin method is the best for the really tough ones. I've also used a waterpic which works well but it always makes my tonsils bleed so that is a bit of a last resort. I know all of this has been said before but it just feel good to get it all out and talk to people who know what it is like.
I remove mine with the end of a bobby pin ! It works great no gagging for me ! I first used a q tip but that made me gag ! The end of a bobby pin is great !
I agree when you have bad breathe because of these yellow popcorn things, you tend not to want to speak to people about it,Luckly I spoke to an ENT doctor to get my tonsils out and will be taken them out.And yes peroxide does work
Do Not use hydrogen peroxide except for a very small amount diluted in water or mouth wash. Peroxide kills off the good bacteria that helps fight off infection and all the other bad bacteria. After all of it is killed off the bad bacteria comes back faster and it can make the situation much worse. The best things to do are to brush your teeth, floss, brush your tongue(with sm. Amount of paste) use mouth wash, gargle w it too. Then use warm salt water, swish in mouth once(may help kill bad bacteria off) then gargle as much as you can(like a sm. Dixie cups worth). If u used saltwater to swish you can re-swish with mouthwash. I have heard other people's methods and I suggest a small LED flashlight in one hand and a bent q-tip in the other. I bend just below the head of it and to a 90 degree angle. Caution: do not buy cheap q tips as they break when bent and will be far more risk to injury. Buy Q-tip brand. When you are all done use chloreseptic spray. I have only made myself bleed a few times in the last 3 months when that happens don't further agitate the area in any way. This is the first occurrence with this issue, I don't currently have insurance or a docto, I'm sure I will in the future. If this issue happens again I will not relent until I have had surgery. I know my medical rights and I'm not putting up with no. This issue is fowl to every degree. I hope these details will help you with your treatment.
Hate to tell you this, but having your tonsils out doesn't necessarily help. I had my tonsils out when I was 10 and I'm 51 now. I get the white chunks in the tissue of my throat where my right tonsil used to be.  This has been happening on & off for the past 15 years.
I find this happens to me quite often when I eat I get something stuck on my tonsils which is really annoying. I've had one that's been annoying me for a few days and couldn't get rid of it by gargling. Tonight I found that I was able to gently push around the white bump using a mini wooden spatula and this white chalky lump oozed out leaving a red hole - pretty gross I know but it was so satisfying to get it out because it was so uncomfortable. They seemed to be worse just after I had a cold so I think they may be linked to the sore throat that I had. Just go gentle on the tonsils and I would suggest to be sure you disinfect any implement you use with a mouthwash before touching your tonsil with it, otherwise - if it's an infection you could possibly make the problem worse.
I also get these nasty chunks of disgusting ness on my one tonsils it seams that about every 3 or 4 days i will start to get this really bad itch in my throght and then will come a nasty taste and i know i have one so i get my flash light and bobby pin the back of it gets all kinds of chunks out its the best tool for the job it really sucks and would rather have my tonsils removed
I have them at times. I always take a toothpick and sterilize it and then take it and pull those out. It works, and YES they smell horrible due to the bacteria, it makes the smell.
I had my tonsils out because of this. Best decision I have ever made. :)
Try cutting out dairy products, it may sound odd but I only get these when I start drinking a lot of milk / eating lots of cheesy stuff. I've tried stopping before (cheese is delicious), and they go away... but once I get weak and start back eating dairy, they start showing up again.   (As a note, mine aren't in pockets, but they sit behind my tonsils in the folds and taste of decay... I poke them off with q-tips because they're exposed)
I am 50 and just now have started having issues with this.  For the last 3 weeks my right ear and throat gland has hurt whenever I swallow. I  discovered two days ago that the right side of my tonsils was very swollen and whenever I touched it with my finger I had this awful smell on my finger.  Last nite I placed a mini flashlight in my mouth and used a magnifying mirror to take a closer look.  I started pushing on the swollen area and I could not believe what started coming out.  Huge chunks of the most foul smelling goop !!  Anyway, I continued to push until the  swelling was completely gone and then I gargled with hot salt water and then peroxide.  This morning the swelling is completely gone and my ear no longer hurts.  I guess this is food that gets stuck and will continue to build up over a period of time.  Very strange thing.
I have the same thing I'm getting my tonsils out March 24th I have gotten strep every month since I was 11 and now I'll be 20 in June so finally found a dr who agrees I need my tonsils removed he said they are very unhealthy and I have some of the worse crypts in my tonsils he's seen and is also get those tonsils stones they are nasty so I'm having my tonsils removed and a deviated septum fixed bc my septum is pushed almost all the way to the left of my nose so I'm basically only breathing through one nostril
I have had this horrible problem for 25 years now since age 17 and it is when I am feeling run down I start to notice the rough feeling in my throat. Sometimes I cough up the disgusting chunks. I now squeeze them out with a finger. It is a safer method than foreign implements. Human design fault I guess..
