This is so weird, but cool. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I just sat at my kitchen table and picked at my gums with a toothpick until they bled.

I was also thinking it may be an autoimmune thing, but nothing that I could pin-point. I work at an animal clinic, and we have some patients with autoimmune dental issues, so I know it is possible to be allergic to your own saliva. But mine only flares up when I eat something tough--like steak, pork, coconut, etc. I can't find a reasonable explanation for any of this.

I've taken NSAID's and even tramadol and nothing seems to help except scratching it raw. I'm just thankful I don't feel this all the time. My heart goes out to those of you who do...

Once again WOW!!! I have been having the urge to poke my gums with toothpicks every since I was eight years old. Every dentist I have been to couldn't find anything wrong. I do not have sinus or allergies. I am seven months prego and can't keep foreign objects out of my mouth. Usually the sensations come every six months and last for about a week. Now, its every month. What relieves it...hot sauce. I will poke all day at work, come home and floss, brush my teeth, and follow with mouthwash....then I swish hotsauce around in my mouth!!!! It feels really good!!! or sometimes I heat up water and salt and use that as mouthwash. I even carry salt around to rub on my itching gums. XD

Man here. I have itchy gums at this instant. Recovering from severe runny nose, mild temperature. Last I had this experience was 15 years ago while undergoing orthodontics. Odd freaks we all are.

wow, i just stumbled on this site, and i have the exact same problem, ever since i was a kid... gumline next to both fangs on top and bottom of mouth itch so much... not all the time, but it comes and goes. especially if i eat steak and certain other meats. i destroyed the area with toothpicks, paperclips, fingernails and anything else i could find to jab at them.. Feels great while im doing it , but as soon as i stop, it itches even more. i even stick objects under my gum in the affected area, but that usually makes it worse afterwards.. its got to the point where my gum has detached from my tooth, and the gap is getting worse everytime i mess with it, its like there's a little chunk of flesh missing...this is driving me nuts!! what is this called? and please don't tell me gingivitis, cause that cant be. its only those four same spots over and over, never anywhere else.. and they usually take turns of which one is itchier...making them bleed and gargling listerine is great, cause i feel that burn, but that feeling doesn't last long. after days of not itching them, the spots turn white, and looks all rotted, disgusting. i never tried heating anything up and branding the itch, but soon i will. im glad to know that im not the only one with this problem...my dentist thought i was crazy when i told him, and i even brush and use listerine every night..WTF man.. when people see me picking at my gums, i tell them im biting my nails, lol its embarrassing to admit what im really doing, cause they'll think im dirty.

I have the same problem. The best solution I've found is "The Doctor's Brushpicks". That little bottlebrush shaped end, aaaaaah... instant relief even if it is temporary.

I'm another person astonished by all the other people talking about this. I've dealt with this for as long as I can remember and I'm 30 years old now.

Right now I'm sitting here poking the hell out of my gums with a stylus pen, it feels so goddamn good, and the plus side is since its blunt and round at the tip it doesn't cause bleeding, even though I've routinely poked and scratched to the point of bleeding.

As of right now all my gums on every area resond to the sensation, and the bottom half of my jaw does as well (just under tongue and up the front incisors. Poking, scratching, rubbing rough, brushing extremly hard and flossing all just feel so incredibly good. When I try to describe the sensation I say its pretty simlar to an orgasm. It seriously feels that amazing and intense.

I cant for the life of me imagine what is the cause of this, poking myself anywhere else on my body especially to the point of bleeding is PAINFUL! But this, god it feels so good.

Since nobodies dentist has been any help can we try to get to the bottom of this? I have been said to have alot of alergies, I find that one of my nasal cavities is always clogged and I'm pretty sure I have post nasal drip. As far as foods go the only food I can think that brings this on or intensifies it is sunflower seeds, but that could just be because often find myself rubbing my gums with the seeds because it scratches them and feels so good!

Help us some doctor please!

I have had a focally itchy spot on my gums near one of my premolars for a couple yrs now. It got worse and worse and I noticed that there was focal recession of the gum line at that spot. I saw one dentist who tried going a deep gum scraping which didn't help. I was finally told that I needed a gum graft because of the recession. I had that done and the itching was gone...until a few months later! The itching came back at that same spot! I was told that I have gum disease and the itching may be a sensation I feel due to the nerves there since pain and itching are similar. I don't know - I'm having a revision of the gum graft for cosmetic reasons and am going to ask the periodontist but I doubt I'll find out anything more. Maybe I need a biopsy of the gum?!!

It's is really annoying, though. I also want to jab sharp objects there to relieve the itching but know from past experience that this only provides temporary relief and may even cause more damage. If I find out anything more, I'll post it. Glad to hear there are others in the same boat!

Hi, I am a 20 year old female and my gums drive me insane! Glad to find this page.

I never knew how to explain the feeling... I guess 'itchy' does the trick, although not completely.

I feel like poking and sticking sharp objects between teeth at the gumline but usually refrain. Just applying pressure with my fingers works a bit. Pretty much the same as all of you.

I mostly get it when I'm running, especially in the cold, or when I have a cold or sinus infection. Sometimes I'll get it for no reason at all.

My dentist and doctor didn't know what it was when I asked... and I struggled to explain it. They said it could possibly be linked to my birth control??
Any other females with this problem on birtch control, or more specifically Tricyclen-lo?

(Since a lot of you have had this for 20+ years, I'm guessing I'm stuck with this for life....)

I feel so much better already knowing there are so many people out there that feel like I do! My itchy gums only come and go. They never really itch all the time, but when they do, it's all I can think about. I hadn't had this problem in awhile, but I recently got a filling replaced in my upper molar, but now (I suppose from the discomfort of my entire mouth) my lower two canine teeth itch profusely.

I scratch them with almost anything I can get ahold of, but my weapons of choice are my fingernails and the cap of my ink pen. I will jab at them until they bleed, and now they both have a red inflammed spot where I have been picking. Now, not only do they itch worse, they are very sensitive to food/drink and even touch.

I regularly visit my dentist and have been told by him that my teeth and gums are in wonderful shape, so I know I don't have periodontal disease or gingivitis. I've never had a cavity except for the one that was recently filled (which was an occurance of caps that I had with braces YEARS ago that eventually wore down my tooth) and I brush and floss regularly.

Any explaination or forms of relief? Oragel does nothing to curtail the itch, just causes tingling in the gums which then cause, you guessed it, scratching.

When an itch hits me, I can't think about anything else but scratching it. It's like having a bad mosquito bite on the inside of your mouth....please help, I'm losing my mind!!

I can see that I'm not alone. I've had this on and off for years. Mine is only the right side of my mouth, nearly the whole gum on that side itches like mad. The itch seems to be worse around the upper 6th tooth. I've been known to floss or pick with a toothpick til it bleeds (as I have the sensation that there's something stuck between the teeth) . . . those interdental brushes are great. As a result I've had infections in that area before.

I've taken to swishing mouthwash around in my mouth several times a day now . . . but when I spit it out, the itching returns.

I've not notices a pattern to the flare-ups. But I have a virus now and it's really bad and so I'm wondering if there's a connection.

Again, I have to say wow I am not alone. Everyone that I tell (including my RN wife) think I am crazy for doing this. And I am not saying that I am not, but it is comforting to hear that others suffer from this weird affliction. I have not found anything to help me stop picking and scratching my gums, although a really concentrated salt solution does seem to sooth them after being picked. I guess the only thing to do is to get rid of any object that can be used to poke the gums... good luck right?

Anyway, hope this helps, and if anyone has a suggestion of how to stop I am all ears.
