I'm 20 and this is the first time this is happening to me, i will probably see my dentist in couple of days cause now is weekend and he is not working... At first I got really scared and crazy because of this but after reading your posts I realize that reason behind this itchy problem might be the cold i had a couple of days ago, now it's passing away but this problem started yesterday, so it might be connected, and i really hope it is and that it isn't some serious problem like dental disease or something... it's periodical, it itches for 1 to 2 hours and than it goes away for about the same time, can't wait to see the dentist, i am getting crazy over this but this thread helped a lot...

I have itchy gums occasionally , seems to go along with sinus problems also. I recently was sent to a periodontist for the gum tissue changing color around the upper teeth. He did a biopsy to rule out cancer, fortunately the results were ok. I'm posting this to make you aware of what he told me during that visit that I didn't know.Since you mentioned you use Listerine every day, you may want to avoid using for a while. This is a specialist in our area. He said never use Listerine. I, like you was using it. He said it could cause , in the most simple terms, chemical burn of the gums. He wasn't promoting any product, just said use a milder rinse. Needless to say I don't use anymore. All is well.

This recently started for me. My gums have been itching between my lower central incisors for a few days now. I feel like I am teething or after a cleaning and my gums are "healing". When i'm not busy doing something it is very annoying. I tried topical anesthetic (20% benzocaine) to no avail. I am currently suffering from a cold/cough like many of you said is what brings it on for you guys. I hope it goes away soon!

lol, it's quite amusing how long it's taken me to find people talking about anything near the kind of gum issues i've had since i was a kid. i am a 21 year old female, and my gums have itched since i've started having adult teeth.

these days i'm becoming more concerned because of the amount of accumulated damage to my gums has completely changed the alignment of my teeth. sometimes it gets so bad that one or more of my molars next to the fangs will become extremely loose or threaten to end its misery. i've been having many vivid life-like dreams about my teeth coming out. kinda disturbing. in one of them, all my teeth were cracked and fragmented to the root, and it made my eyes go blind for some reason.

after paying more attention to my body and considering the anatomy of the mouth area, i'm getting the suspicion that our problem has nothing to do with the gums, but the nerves beneath/around the roots of our teeth. this is going to sound really gorey (cause believe me it is) but the only way i can get the horrible itching to stop is to use a metal tooth scraper and push it directly up into the gum between the teeth as hard as i can until i "reach the itch". the sudden relief always coincides with the spurt of blood, almost like my blood was itchy! or maybe the vessel was swollen/under pressure. after a couple minutes of generous gushing, the bleeding stops and i feel fine enough to return to my life. if it comes back, it usually takes at least a day, but at least i have real relief from it for a while.

anyone else experiencing it to this degree? i have virtually no feeling or pain in my gums in those areas of my mouth anymore because i guess i've killed the nerves. regardless, i can still fully feel that horrible itching sensation. there's no way it's from the gums.

try a decongestant and some rub some benzocaine on the itchy parts (both available over the counter)

12/19/09 guest who pokes gum at the root...FINALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLY someone else in the world GETS IT!!!!!!!!!!! I am 44 and have been ripping my gums apart since I was in 2nd grade! No dentist has ever been able to solve the mystery and they all say they have never encountered a patient with this complaint before. My current dentist has even consulted a gum specialist who has brought the topic up at a conference...still nothing. At my last appointment, the dentist shot some novacaine into that spot kinda just to see what would happen. It made it a thousand times worse! It was so bad that while I was waiting for him to come back in the room, I literally took my earring out and shoved it down into the gum to get some relief! Thankfully this awesome dentist was willing to try jabbing the tooth scraper tool (the really sharp one) into my gum and he said that every time I indicated he'd hit "the spot", he had gotten down to bone! After he mangled my gum with multiple punctures in that spot, it did not itch for actually a couple of months! That is the most relief I have ever had. As a kid I would slide my fingernail between those two bottom front teeth because pulling them apart gave me great relief. Then I started sliding things between my teeth like credit cards, pen caps, and my driver's license because the more I spread those teeth apart, the more relief I felt.Maybe that was because by pulling the top of the teeth apart, it squeezed the bottom of the teeth closer together which hit the itchy spot. I have flossed as deep as I can and then pulled the floss straight across to rip out the gum...which felt good at the moment I did it, but did not solve the problem. I have tried those Christmas tree shaped brushes, but the itch is deep inside the gum so that just irritates the outside. I literally can only get relief by puncturing the gum. My entire life I've been told to stop messing with it because I'm going to get an infection. Well, I finally believe that SOMEONE (YOU!) can understand the level of itching I experience which is so intense that the risk of an infection is something I don't consider for even a moment. I have just recently taken a straight pin and I have punctured my gum and sort of moved the needle around to try to identify the exact spot that itches. It is literally one teeny, tiny, miniscule, specific spot. Yesterday I pushed the pin down into the spot as much as I could stand and let it just sit there. The relief (pain...but unbelievable relief) was incredible! I left the pin in there for about an hour til the effects seemed to subside. Then just a slight shift of the pin and I could get relief again. I'm convinced it is a nerve gone haywire and I am wondering if an acupunturist could maybe kill the nerve????? Topical solutions do nothing as the itch is soooo deep in the gum. I've tried to freeze the area, but can't tolerate the ice on my teeth long enough to get the whole gum numb. The WEIRDEST thing is that my 8 year old son recently told me his gum was itching and he pointed to the exact same spot where I have the problem! His description of how it feels was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too accurate for him to have been copycatting me. PLEASE someone tell me you have solved this problem. ANYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh myyyyyyyy gosh! I can't believe theres more people! It's unbearable! I came online to see if there was anything you could do about it but itchy gums no one seems to understand how horrible it is unless you have them. Only relief i find is putting a nail between the teeth or by just itching it and poking it and mouth wash. I can't believe how resorted to pain we are!

Hi ALL!

I'm a bit late in responding to your posts but I TOO suffer from itchy teeth.
I told my dentist and he had no clue what to prescribe me. I thought that I was the only human being with this bizarre condition. My dentist noticed that I had small spaces between a few of my teeth and so whenever I would eat, tiny food particles would get caught in between my teeth- causing irritation. I can remember being 7 and constantly poking at my back teeth with a tooth pick for hours till they bled because the irritation was so severe. Since the procedure, ( my dentist filled the tiny spaces) I seldom have irritation.
I am wondering if the pesticides on fruits and veggies contribute to this problem as well.

Just to add that I always get incessantly itchy gums whenever I have a cold. The worst thing is that I can't stop grinding my teeth into the spot where my lower wisdom teeth should be and end up cutting all my gums open which then makes the situation even worse. Told a doctor about this but they didn't listen and gave me treatment for cold sores which I had on my lips passing over the main problem that was driving me mad. So glad I'm not the only one out there who will poke their gums to till they bleed, wash their mouth out with alcohol or even use a bottle of anbesol in a couple of days just to get some relief.

I have had this since the 3rd grade. I finally got temporary relief from a prescription called Magic Mouthwash. It has lidocaine, which is a numbing agent in it.

Hello again all,

I posted a comment in March 2009 about how my gum above my right front tooth has itched since about 1985-86. Just to refresh (so you don't have to skip back)

~I had a skin graph done by a periodontist. It took but I, of course, picked the new gum away

~I had sinus surgery in 2002 after the ENT found a polyp on my maxillary nerve. Itch remains

~I have been to a nuerologist. Had an MRI - nothing resting on my nerves. She diagnosed me with Tri-geminal neurologia (which is a nerve disorder) She prescribed diff. meds (tegretal - weight gain) and Topomax (weight loss, but slipped into a depression) Stopped the meds. She precribed Maxalt (migraine meds) but they make me feel crappy too.

~Back to ENT today and asked him to look in my sinuses again - they're clear! He suggested going back to the neurologist and perhaps she can prescribe me beta blockers. He also mentioned OCD!!! He said maybe I have a tick and I picked at my tooth so much that I caused trama to my nerve.

~Been to several dentists and they all say my teeth and gums are healthy.

Questions for all of you:

Do you have an irregular heart beat? I do. I skip some beats here and there, but it's nothing serious (been to a cardiologist)

Do you suffer from migraines?

Do you suffer from OCD?

This is driving me NUTS! We need to find a doctor that can help us before we rip out our teeth!

forgot to add to above post:

~received acupunture for up 2 to years

~had my teeth filed to fix my bite

clearly nothing worked.

OMG, I'M NOT ALONE EITHER! I thought i was the only person in the world who experiences this problem. Its specifically worse after I eat fruit, especially apples. I avoid eating fruit, and the only fruit i've eaten recently is apples and oranges, and this is rare because the itching is so bad afterwards, i can't handle it. The itching also spreads to my lips too. I think what the reason that I have an itchy gum problem is because I brush my teeth way too hard, so i think it makes my gums somewhat raw, and once eating fruit, the acids irritate my gums. Same thing with my lips, I have a lip chewing/biting problem, to where i make my lower lip bleed, and the acid gets into the sore/raw spot and irritates the gum. Does anyone else have raw gums or bite their lower lip???? Just curious....maybe this is all the problem we have in common and are not realizing.

wow, i too suffer from this but only when i get a cold, and i also suffer with my sinuses, infact i have to have an operation to drain them so i am almost 100% convinced its down to sinus problems, i too worry that its a gum problem but my dentist says not, the fact that i get it worse when i have a cold or a sinus issue must mean something.

to the poster who said they had what they thought were sinus problems and popping up their nose alongside tiredness and other symtyms i am exactly the same, i would suggest going back to your dr about your sinuses, just because they were clear at the time they were looked at means nothing.

i do hope someone finds a way to solve this irritating problem

yes, my gums also itch when i have post nasal drip... i think... maybe the mucus is acidic or basic and that irritates the gums. I think it may be cured by a weak acid or base to neutralise the effect, like rinsing ur mouth with vinegar... That may stop the itching..
