So glad I found this thread - it's helping maintain my sanity after not being believed by my doctor and insurance company for almost a year!! I fell down some stairs at work almost a year ago - slipped on wet marble and bounced down 4 steps full force on my left buttock. Following the accident, I had a horseshoe shaped bruise and indentation across my butt cheek, with swelling above. Months later, the doctors at the work comp clinic were still telling me that it would resolve with time, and even afterr I convinced them to refer me to a specialist, my insurance company refused to approve the referral. The lump (aka "third cheek" or "butt boob" as my partner calls it) did get a bit smaller when I lost some weight, but it's always visible under even slightly clingy pants and has started to be painful again when I'm lying on my back or sitting in a desk chair for extended periods. Just this week, I FINALLY got my insurance provider to approve me being seen by a specialist, rather than the state-mandated workers' comp clinic. Anyway, I want to share the research I've done in hopes it will help someone else get treatment earlier than I did. When describing your injury to physicians, use the following terms: "fat fracture", "post traumatic psuedolipoma", or "traumatic lipomata". Here is an article I found describing surgical treatment for this type of injury: https://www.cureus.com/articles/14522-surgical-approach-to-a-post-traumatic-fat-fracture . If the link doesn't work, search for El Khoury J, Adams D, Saliba C, et al. (September 27, 2018) Surgical Approach to a Post-traumatic Fat Fracture. Cureus 10(9): e3378. doi:10.7759/cureus.3378. I hope this helps someone avoid what I've been through for the last year. I will post updates on my case when I have something to report. :) Good luck and God bless everyone who is dealing with this.
Thank you
Thank you!
The good news is that one of my best girlfriends had the same thing happen and it went away over time. Also, my best friend's husband had it happen and it went away in 6 to 7 months. The key is to massage it daily -- or multiple times a day, if you can. Don't stress -- there's a good chance it'll go away on its own.
I too fell down an entire flight of stairs in March 2021. I now have a large slightly curved dent in my left butt check. I’m 5’8”, 130 lbs, 46 years old and wear Lululemon yoga pants and sometimes some form fitting dresses etc and my dent is noticeable.
Anyway, I just had fat grating surgery 6 days ago by a reputable Toronto plastic surgeon. He took fat from above my tailbone/lower back area and grafted it into the dent. 6 days out I don’t think it worked. I have a follow up tomorrow so we’ll see what he says. I’ve read that a subcision is required for opening up scar tissue and releasing it so the fat graft doesn’t end up sitting on top of the dent. I may need a referral to a trauma surgeon. I don’t know. The other option is injectable fillers but the plastic surgeon says they don’t last past 2 years.
