my husband has quit smoking a couple of times over the last few years and started back after several months of terrible diarrhea. We have talked to other "quitters" including his mother who also suffered from this problem. Please help.

Quit 21 days ago and the last 5 days have been nothing but time on the toilet. Almost every hour I am awakened at night because of the the gas, diarrhea, nausea, and sulfur burps. Exactly what is being described here is what I have going on. Imodium is my only minor relief. This really sucks....does anyone know how long this could last and some safe foods to eat that could assist with the process. I was a smoker for 14 years and if I had know this could happen, I would have never started! The things we do to impress the ladies.....:-P
Day 2 or 3 into quitting smoking I had to run to the bathroom and sit down, nothing but air and lots of it. Good thing I was not smoking I could have blown up the place. Lol
Its week 4 and things are getting better still some diarrhea and still some gas, not as bad as that first week. Been a pack a day smoker for 25 years and glad I quit.

It has been 3 months since I quit. Constant diarrhea since week 2. I haven't really found any relief. Tums help a little with the burping. I'm not giving up though. Just wish I knew how long this will last. Good luck everyone and hang in there.
Really, does ANYONE know how long the diarrhea lasts after quitting. Pretty painful and I have to work - as a teacher!! Pretty tough to keep running out of the classroom.
Please let me know.
Thanks SO much!
Day 8 and the diarrhea has really picked up in the last two days. The gas build started about five days ago. I'm drinking water quite a bit so my bladder is pretty active as well.
This is my second real attempt to quit smoking. The first time I only experienced the diarrhea for a couple of days. The gas lasted alot longer (months longer). The diarrhea this time does seem more severe so don't time there's a set time frame and based on other posts I think a just varies.
Am in the same boat.
Quit smoking 5 weeks ago after 34 years of a couple of packs a day, but also was starting to cut down fairly seriously for 3 months before I stopped.
Was told that one of the things that followed from quitting was constipation. Well, that is hardly my experience! I'ts been quite the damn reverse! Don't really want to go in to descriptions of this or anything - noone really wants to know how anyone else's guts are faring - but, by gee, for me it's been a constant attachment to the porcelain for this last month or so I can tell you!
Anyway, I'm just happy to know that others have also experienced the same thing, because I was really starting to wonder if something wasn't seriously wrong with my guts.
Cheers

Quit almost 7 months ago, and it is more or les gone. I had gas, bloathing and diarrhea during 6 months. Then I had knee surgery. After that it went away in like 1,5-2 weeks. after surgery I was on anti-inflammatory meds after surgery during a week or so. I belief that actually helped me out.
I had only been smoking for about a month before my boyfriend talked me into quitting, and I only had used Blu E-Cigarrettes. I'm on day 7 of diarrhea. I tried not eating for three days, and I didn't have any problems, but as soon as I tried eating again I was back to running to the bathroom. (I can't NOT eat, I'm losing too much weight as it is).
Can someone please tell me this will end soon? I really don't think I can handle having it for months, and not being sure what to expect is killing me.
I quit smoking 11 days ago, 1 pack a day for twenty years, I quit strictly because of cost.

I am not feeling all that much better or at all better for that matter
the only place i see a differnce is my wallet and that aint that much
bro...just be patient as i also went through the same thing and still having the same experience but know that it will not be permanent and just be happy bcoz every toxic substance is been flushed out so u can be healthy once again ....i will advice not to take so much immodium as that will also cause severe constipation ...just allow the body to do his own thing and i know we all will become successful quitters.
You are correct nicotine supresses/calms UC (which I have) - nicotine replacement therapy is sometimes prescribed. But first step is to consult your Doctor.
