my husband has quit smoking a couple of times over the last few years and started back after several months of terrible diarrhea. We have talked to other "quitters" including his mother who also suffered from this problem. Please help.

I quit smoking 7 years ago and I've had to take 2 Imodium every morning. A couple of nurses have told me that my situation is common and advised me Imodium is the best cure if it works.

Yes, I'm about to go into my third day, can't sleep its 2 am. Was in the gym earlier today; after about an hour of lifting I had to let it out. It was explosive diarrhea. I had diarrhea the day before also, in pretty good shape so I think my body is expelling the toxins quickly; getting gas, headaches, insomnia for sure. I am sick and tired of these damn things controlling me. Good luck to you. Never, never, never, never give up -Winston Churchill.
I quit smoking over 5 weeks ago and have severe diarrhea since. Went to Dr. and they want to do a colon test. I than started to wonder if my diarrhea was due to my stop smoking. I am convinced that is the problem. Told me to stay on imodium and pepto. Also wants to do a colonoscopy but I am putting that on hold to see if my quit smoking is what is causing the problem. I am sure the body takes a major hit when you have smoked for years and then quit all at once. For me it was all or nothing, had to be cold turkey.
thanks for all the answers folk are saying my husband stopped8 weeks ago and we are quite worried about this diarrhea, he has an appointment today with the doctor so might get something as we are away on holiday in 2 weeks to Australia
Dipping- Proud to say I am on Day 8 of my quit. I was a can a day dipper for 7 years. My gas and diarrhea showed up on the 4th day of my quit and is worse today. I realize a lot of it may have to do with the fact that I am irritable, mad and needing something in my mouth IE(Eating More) But this is the pits I tell ya! Hopefully this ends soon and I can enjoy life more while quitting!
It gets better. I'm almost at my 6 month mark. You can do it!
Same here!!!!

I quit 8 days now and i hand the same problem. I'm about to go to my doctor and see what she can do cuz i can't keep doing this. Tmi but from the diarrhea my but hurts so bad.
I'm coming up on 5 weeks now, and this is the second time in the past week and a half that I've had somewhat painful gas and bad diarrhea. The funny thing is, I'll have to run to the bathroom 3 or 4 times (it's rough, I'm not going to describe it, chances are if you're reading this you know what I mean) then it subsides.
However when the diarrhea ceases I don't have any kind of bowel movement for days.
I guess when you smoke for 25 years, pack a day, then stop, your body is going to adjust. It's not all going to be pleasant.
I'm clearly no doctor, but I think I can see that this (and my diarrhea symptoms) is all my fault.

Nicotine does harm as well. It is not an appropriate treatment for any medical issue!!
I quit 2 days ago, and I am having terrible bloating, gas,and diarrhea. I contacted my Dr and he advised me that quitting smoking does affect the intestines. He said that the issue can sometimes take up to 2-3 weeks to resolve. Hang in there!!!
