my husband has quit smoking a couple of times over the last few years and started back after several months of terrible diarrhea. We have talked to other "quitters" including his mother who also suffered from this problem. Please help.

This happens to me every time I quit smoking and ends up being the reason I start again. Not just the first few days as a withdrawal symptom, it continues for months. My gastro physician explained that I have a colitis that has been masked by the nicotine all these years. Apparently the nicotine coats your intestines. His suggestion is to take a nicotine gum or use a patch. Sorry but if I am going to remain addicted to nicotine I am going to smoke. I have been suffering with diarrhea for 5 mos and I am also seeking a cure before I go back to smoking. Several prescription meds have proven useless. Open to alternative suggestions.
I quit 18 July 2015, so just over a year. I quit by vaping. My diarrhea started 3 months into my quit but major gas and bloating before that. I thought it was from vaping so gave that up too. 3 months later I was admitted to hospital with Ulcerative Colitis. I thought the diarrhea would go away and it just got worse and worse and then the bleeding started. If you want to be sure ask your doctor to run a feacal Calprotectin test. That is pretty good indication of wether or not you have IBD. I don't want to scare anyone but please rather be safe than sorry. It is a well documented fact that smoking cessation can cause a colitis flare. It is known as a disease of non-smokers.
On a lighter note I have found some relief for the gas and diarrhea that I have not even experienced on rx Meds for colitis. I take one capsule of psyllium seed powder with two VSL#3 probiotic capsules at the same time and it is the best my stomach has felt in over a year. i am so excited about this. I read up about others who have also had amazing results. A colitis forum. Even if you don't have colitis it may help reduce the trips to the bathroom. It's certainly did for me. I hope this helps someone. I was so desperate I was seriously thinking of going back to smoking. This has given me hope for the first time in 9 months. You can take it two or three times a day. I have only been taking it once a day as I wanted to see how it would affect me. just remember to drink loads of fluid as psyllium can be constipating. The results have been incredible for me. Bleeding is decreasing everyday and I have gone from 10/15 movements a day to just 2 or 3. Good luck quitters!

This is just an adjustment of your GI system to the normal functioning without nicotine, since nicotine and other chemicals in tobacco has a phenomenal side effect on GI system it will take some time for GI to come back from the weird environment to the normal functioning in a poison free environment,, keep away from smoking and give enough time to get normal gastro functioning. ( i used to smoke 20 cigerettes a day and ended up with rarest IBS and indigestion)
I quit smoking cigs after 36 yrs. And yes i have 5 day and have diarrhea and bloating nausa headaches yes its real hanging in there staying strong
I'm on day 4 now mate, same problem too. Good to hear that we've all got the same problem and we have each other's backs...poor choice of words.
Okay so all we need is a knee op! hahaha
One theory, but I'm getting the same thing quitting oral tobacco. Quit for a few months last summer and was fine. Fell off the wagon in the cold weather and I'm back at it now with some very angry guts this go-around.
Don't drink milk . Omg do your research . Don't tell people stuff that can actually make things worse . Avoid milk !
Excuses excuses excuses
4 weeks into my quit I'm getting watery diarrhoea and found the following. Basically you may have coeliac disease or gluten intolerance. Not conclusive, but interesting. I'll now go gluten-free next 4 weeks.

I realize this thread is old but hoping for some help.
I have been mostly smoke free for about three months, maybe a bit longer. I am using nicotine lozenges to stay off the cigarettes and without them I'd be back to smoking. On occasion during the first few weeks of quitting I would smoke on a Friday night when I had a few beers after the work week. But now I have not had a cigarette in three weeks. Lots of nicotine lozenges through this entire time.
About the start of June I developed diarrhea and it's been non stop. In the beginning there was a good deal of gas at night. Far more than I had ever experienced. But now the gas has mostly gone away.
Have been to the doctor, blood test, stool test and brief examination. Blood test said I was vitamin D deficient, stool tests were all negative for microbiological ( ?) problems.
The doctor put me on a lactose free diet and greatly reduced the items which I can eat and he wants a colonoscopy. Fine.
But even after hot having dairy since the 4th of July I still have the problems.
I am beginning to think nicotine lozenges and the amount I have been consuming is the problem. Any input or opinions would be so helpful.
Thank you.
I'm so excited to read that I'm not the only one going thru this, I had terrible thoughts of stomach or colon cancer.
I quit on May 25th. 2017, the same day we found out that not only has my middle sister been fighting lung cancer since August 2016, but my baby sister was diagnosed with throat cancer on the day I quit.
back to the topic at hand, I to have been going thru stomach bloats and growls with minor pain, very fowl smelling gas and diarrhea nearly on a daily basis.
This makes it difficult to go anywhere or do much of anything. I've not seen it listed here, not I've had changes in my mood lately, I've been severely depressed as well, I don't know if that has to do with my only 2 sisters having cancer or if it's from not smoking.
Well, this entire issue has been resolved for me since I stopped using the nicotine replacement devices. I stopped the lozenges as I was overdosing on these things. Eating like candy trying to get rid of the cravings.
No more diarrhea at all since I stopped using the lozenges. Met a younger man who went through the exact same thing except he was using nicotine gum and lots of it each day.
Not sure how many of you are using these things but be careful how many you consume each day
