I get these too once in a while. I haven't really had them for years, but I recently started eating a lot of oranges (because they are dee lic ious) and drinking orange soda, and that's when I got them again. I remember I used to get these in high school when I would eat kiwi fruit so I think mine are related to acidic food and drink. It really is irritating, and I'm hoping they go away in a few days like normal. I feel like I wanna scrape my tastebuds off. No more oranges for me.

I've felt like there's a hair stuck at the back of my throat for several months now. I'm 40 yrs old, a moderate smoker and drink probably a little more than I should, so naturally was starting to get a little concerned. I can feel a couple of raised small nodules right at the back of my tongue that don't seem to be enlarging but then again don't seem to be going away. I've visited my GP who couldn't see or feel anything major but has referred me to an ENT specialist as a precaution. After doing a bit of research myself I'm thinking that I've probably enlarged Circumvallate Papillae. Their onset seemed to coincide with the time I started to drink red wine rather than ale ... I understand there's no treatment but I'm going to try and cut down the smoking and drinking and see whether things calm down.

I too noticed these enlarged bumps during a bad cold when I also had a yeast infection both on my Tongue and on my penis. This wasn't sexually transmitted by my doctors repeatedly misdiagnosed these bumps as oral herpes, oral genital warts AND secondary-stage syphilis!! Now that the cold and the thrush have gone, the bumps are still there, but I have found mouthwash seems to help a little. I am also taking acidophilous probiotic, which my doctor recommended

I've had a sore throat, especially at night, for about a week, and didn't look in the mirror until yesterday morning. I saw the bumps on the back of my tongue and immediately assumed I had herpes or syphyllis or cancer. I went to the doctor this morning and he told me that I had an enlarged circumvallate papillae and it was normal. If your bumps were roughly the same size, in a V-shape on the back of your tongue, and felt somewhat uncomfortable you were probably misdiagnosed. :)

About 2 weeks ago i felt a sensation of a hair or something stuck in my throat, so i looked at my throat and FREAKED OUT when i saw raised areas on the back of my tongue. I work with a doc who told me it was just my taste buds that were enlarged but i still have the feeling of the hair stuck in my throat!! Is it safe to assume that my big buds are tickling the back of my throat when i swallow? I only feel it when i swallow, there really is no pain, but it is sooo annoying!! Any advice?? Also, when i eat i somethimes get a sour/bitter taste in the back of my throat, and feels like i have mucous, but nothing will come up. Its driving me nuts!!

I started to use Dentryl mouthwash a few weeks ago and almost immediately got a sore throat. My throat cleared up but now I have enalrged circumvallate papillae (thanks to the diagnosis here :) ). I'm not sure if its the mouthwash or some rather spicy soup i made right before I first noticed them. I have some acidophilus, so i'll give that a go. needless to say i've chucked the mouthwash...

Thank you for all for the information here! It is very helpful since I got the same problem for several days. I had consulted with my GP and two pharmacists. My GP said it is fugal infection and gave me Nilstat and the pharmacists suggested me to take the medicine for a couple of days. Now I think I don't need to take this medicine any longer since I am quite sure they are enlarged circumvallate papilae and the medicine won't help. I feel a little run down recently, so I think I need something to help my immune system, and I believe that would help more.May be my bumps would disappear when I feel stronger.

Funny, i noticed these Enlarged Circumvallate Papillae about 3 days ago....I was scared crapless and decided to ignore it and hope it disappeared...Finally I after coming to terms that I might need a doctor, I read a book about tongues and found out exactly what my problem is..I just recently started taking One-a-day-women, I don't know if this would have any connections...I hope this goes away, it is a really unpleasant feeling at the back of my tongue and my palate.. but on a good note, I know a lot more about my tongue now.

I'm sorry that you got so scared by it but I'm glad that you were at least able to solve your issue. IN the future though if you're scared, try to see a doctor instead of being scared. It can help a lot!

So glad I found this site! I have enlarged papillae as well but mine have been up for months now and my throat is so sore! I have been to 4 doctors and a dentist and all said they couldnt see anything unusual but my throat looks swollen on one side. is it possible to have these things raised for so long? its really getting me down now, from when I wake to when I go to bed I cant think of anything else!
Anyone else had them for as long as I have?
Any advice as to what to use would be great too, just to relieve the soreness, Ive tried all sorts of mouthwash etc and they dont help.
Thanks

Yesterday I noticed an enlarge Foliate Papillae on the right side of my tongue. I'm so glad I found this forum I was like omg I have cancer or thrush which can also mean I have HIV. I now know I do not have thrush or cancer so in return no HIV.

I'm so glad I found this. I have an enlarged Foliate Papillae that I noticed yesterday. I freaked out I was so scared I started to have a panic attack. I've been eating a lot of M&M's lately and I haven't had soda in awhile, around saturday is when I started drinking Soda and eating the M&M's. I'm so glad that I'm not the only one with this. My aunt and uncle told me to wash my mouth with mouthwash or warm salt water 3-4 times a day. It just bothers me so much. OH I had surgery about 2 months ago. Could that have anything to do with the enlarged Foliate Papillae? ?

So very glad to have found this. My throats been bothering me for a few days, felt like something was in it (I had piece of food caught in my throat the other day and thought maybe I hurt my throat coughing it out), looked in my mouth last night and noticed my tongue had strange raised areas, today, throat feels the same, tongues the same. But after researching I am not 1/2 as worried as I was.
If it continues I will see the dr however.
Haven't used mouthwash here, no cold or flu either. I did come off antibotics about 2-3 weeks ago for a bee sting (of all things lol)

try rinsing your mouth with salt water often, i have the same thing and its really uncomfortable! i have a terrible cough and im beginning to lose my voice. it could just be linked with a sore throat but my boyfriend said he noticed them a while ago and i went the docs yesterday and she didnt really say anything about them. it was about my sore throat anyway but she would have said if she'd have seen them and they were somethin important! its really mingin to look at though haha :-P
