Hi/ i also have tongue swelling sometimes and pain in the throat like someone kicked me in the throat. It is allergies, weather, food, and acid reflux I am told by my doctor. yes it is so frightening, and the pain in the throat bone hurts. Prilosec helps but not tht much, but never stop taking it I did and ended up in the ER, almost died. Reflux, makes you throw up dry heaves, and swollen tongue is the worst, throat swells too and no saliva, this condition can also cause, constipation or the runs, and you get dehydrated. go to ER, get fluids and sometimes a shot for the nausea, and then you can go home and you will be well again in a few hours. But, take it easy for a few days. Watch what you eat, just do bland, and it will be calmed down and not give you anymore symptoms, if you do not eat spicey or drink bad drinks, you can avoid the ER. Don't be afraid to go,to the ER if you absolutely have to it is ok, if you cannot do it at home call 911 get the ambulance and go and believe me they will help you, and you will feel better knowing you are going to be treated for this condition and be well again in a few hours. The Doctors will treat it, but if you just don't eat anything bad, and don't drink anything bad, just water and cranberry juice, or a little ginger ale, will help to rehydrate you and clear up the problem, in a while. Praying for Us All! GIGI

Hello, Im having a similar problem, Im 13 years old, and it feels like my throat is closing up I get it through the day and sometimes through the night. It aches, but what Im most concerned about is that it feels like its closing up, but I can still breath, it aches but its a worrying ache %-) I was wondering if any of you could give me any advice Im really worried. I've told my parents but they wont take me to the doctor for a check-up or anything like that, my mum doesnt really like doctors unless it's something really important. So if anyone can give me advice that would be great, I'm really scared :-) Thanks x

It takes a real genius to Google "stop breathing while sleeping disorder," and then to diagnose themselves with Sleep Apnea... Out of all the responses I can see only two that actually give constructive assistance to the people who stop breathing at night, other than that, other forum posters write their personal stories(which they seem to think is somehow different that the poster before's) over and over again and then providing THEIR personal belief to what they think they have
Kudos to the people that pointed out asthma, allergies, and anxiety. These are the most likely real causes for the majority of people. To all the people that believe they have sleep apnea, I hope you realize that there are a lot of risk factors that make this more likely. If these risk factors are pretty straight on with you (overweight, older, smoker, etc. etc) then perhaps you do have sleep apnea. A 14 year old 120 pound 5'6 girl most likely does not have this issue. Also Sleep Apnea has such a broad spectrum to describe the individual who stops breathing while sleeping. Meaning it may happen to a person once or it may happen multipe times a night, but they're both considered to have the disorder. Please do not be so quick to associate your symptoms with a disorder; it can alter how you speak to your physician about the situation, and it diminishes your ability to accept other disorders/health disparities as possibilities.
For the people that specifically said "I freak out about having Sleep Apnea and am scared to go to sleep" most likely need to take a "Chill Pill" and realize their anxiety is what causes these symptoms. The individual who read the symptoms for Sleep Apnea and then started to feel they had it as well, please seek assistance for your hypochondria.

I also have this same problem and have esophogeal reflux. I am not so sure that they are related though as I take Prevacid everyday as a deterent to the reflux. It only seems to occur in the morning when I awake and I have not had any stressful or anxious dreams. It feels like it gets tight and stays that way for about an hour or two unless I put a licorice starlight in my mouth and let it slowly desolve. I am wondering if it is a dry throat problem or maybe lack of enough water. I am also guilty of not drinking enough water everyday. I have developed the skill to just relax into the sensation and not panic anymore because it has never really shut of my breathing. I also wonder if it may not be related to mold or mildew in the air plentums in my house. I have heard of that before too...hopes this helps.
Hi, Based on the information about how it started after your son jumped on you, I think you may have a hernia. There are different kinds of hernia. I think you may have a hiatal hernia. Here is some info. I found online. Let me say as a disclaimer that I don't have a medical degree like most people posting on this site. Please discuss with your doctor to see if this is a possibility and why/why not. I would also consider getting a second opinion if you are dissatisfied with your current treatment. I hope you find effective treatment soon.

Hiatal Hernia Overview
Hiatal hernia is a condition in which the upper portion of the stomach protrudes into the chest cavity through an opening of the diaphragm called the esophageal hiatus. This opening usually is large enough to accommodate the esophagus alone. With weakening and enlargement however, the opening (or herniation) can allow upward passage or even entrapment of the upper stomach above the diaphragm.
Hiatal hernia is a common condition. By age 60, up to 60% of people have it to some degree.
There are 2 types of hiatal hernia.
The sliding type, as its name implies, occurs when the junction between the stomach and esophagus slides up through the esophageal hiatus during moments of increased pressure in the abdominal cavity. When the pressure is relieved, the stomach falls back down with gravity to its normal position.
The fixed type (or paraesophageal) implies that there is no sliding up and down. A portion of the stomach remains stuck in the chest cavity.
Hiatal Hernia Causes
Suspected causes or contributing factors
Obesity
Poor seated posture (such as slouching)
Frequent coughing
Straining with constipation
Frequent bending over or heavy lifting
Heredity
Smoking

I've had the same problem at different times this year. We may be getting close to the source! I'm having a reaction to an omege 3 supplement. I took it in April, ran out and started taking it again several weeks ago. Both times the problem occurred. Sometimes more severe than others (I'm not super consistent in taking it). So I experimented. Went without it for a week - no symptoms, added it back in and it's back full force. It could be the fish oil, or the gelatin capsule that it's in. Still researching it. Misery! Angina is still a possibility as a parent has it and it is somewhat hereditary. Silent Angina has few symptoms. Irregular Angina is dangerous too. An allergy would really be better.
Dear Butterflygirl,
Freaky coincidence, but the same exact thing/treatment happened to me. I originally had bronchitis a few weeks ago. After wrapping up the round of amoxicillian, my throat started to constantly feels like it was closing up on a daily basis. It started one night when I sprung out of a sound sleep unable to breath in. I went to my primary care doctor who referred me to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist who gave me an endoscope and said everything looked fine. My airways looked great, etc. He decided to start me on a 6 day worth of methylprednisolone which I'm still taking but I'm still having this terrible feeling. Sometimes an antacid tablet like Gaviscon will quell the feeling for an hour or so, but it's been an issue that I'm still struggling with every day.
After talking to my family about it I found out that my grandmother was a case study because she was going through the same exact thing for 9 months until they had to put a trach in her. (They still hadn't figured out it was acid reflux at that point). She hadn't been showing any of the typical symptoms of acid reflux other than troubling breathing. Now she takes prescribed medication for it every day, and uses Gaviscon whenever she feels the sensation coming on. She also had a surgery where they shrank the portion of her stomach where it met her esophogus so the acid wouldn't come up as much, and needs to go back every 4 years to have it stretched.
I'm hoping I can get my situation under control before I have to go through something similar.

It feels like my throat is closing at night, and I start tO shake real bad.
My name is colin...im 17 and am going through a lot of stress. My dad just died about a month ago and im starting to have anxiety issues. My throat felt like it was closing, it also felt dry. My legs get shaky and feel weak, and i got hot. I am on an antibiotic steroid and helps but only a little.. at first the doctors thought it was either strep or mono but now they believe it is because of anxiety. after watching my father die in the hospital, it is hard to not think about death and after this first started, all i thought about was me not waking up in my sleep because of my throat closing. hopefully i calm my anxiety and all will be well i hope everyone here gets better also!
yea i was in a life threating accident which thankfully i survived... and i already had panic attacks and mild anxiety mostly due to smokin and drinkin alot... but after that, everything went for manageable to almost being the walking dead... i cant even be around my friends because i no longer feel comfortable.. i barely work cause i can barely get to sleep or wake up... i have numbness in my limbs, pain in my chest, neck, vision blurryness, choking in my throat... feels like a stroke or a heart attack regularly... and to this day, i dont think i would be able to tell the difference... ive almost lived at the E.R. for the last six months, and since i cant get anxiety meds kuz i already had a drinkin issue and smokin pot from time to time, which was semi regulating my anxiety, but after the accident.. i found myself drinkin almost 12-18 beers a day just to function properly... altho now its only made my anxiety worse, and i get the violent shakes, tremors.. its a vicious cycle and im finally gettin to detox and treatment... not because i dont beleive i could stop myself, but because im terrified of being alone with all these symptoms, and yes choking has recently just started happening to me, not to an extreme but somtimes it just feels like my throat is closing for no reason... i even have sores on the side of my lip, and they gave me a topical steriod, which made the chokin feelin soo much worse... i wish one day just to feel like i did when i was 19, before i even knew of the shitty parts of life, woulda never taken my health for granted but i beleive if sombody like me has hope for anxiety and panic attacks... we all do... just stay strong people.. life gives us sh*t hands somtimes, but things are what we make them. and we can make them better...
I have been having the same problem with the throat closing up and can't talk or breathe... I have come to the conclusion that it is allergy related and post-nasal drip because I keep mentholated cough drops with me at all times and when I feel this coming on, (sometimes no warning, but sometimes it starts with a cough), I suck on a cough drop as fast as I can and the menthol really helps to stop it. I take Benedryl, an anti-histamine when I feel like the post-nasal drip starts or this problem starts or I have seasonal allergies... I find drinking lots and lots of water throughout the day helps quite a bit as well because it keeps my throat lubricated and if I have mucus the water thins it out. I have also noticed that when this happens if I panic it makes it worse so I try to remain calm and do the above things and also try to keep my stress levels as low as possible because I think stress also brings this on... I started having this issue when I was working for a major airline doing reservations and talked non-stop all day... You HAVE to keep your throat lubricated... Water consumption is EXTREMELY important and those cough drops are literally a life saver to me... I don't think I will die from it but that's because I do these things and they are pretty much a quick relief.. I know how scarry this is though because it feels like you aren't going to be able to breathe and you are going to suffocate...
If your thoat is horse for a long time though you really should see a doctor because hoarsness can be a sign of something serious...
Just try to relax and try to keep your stress levels as low as possible and keep that water, Benedryl, and those mentholated cough drops handy..I also keep water and cough drops bedside if I wake up in the night and feel really dry...
Good luck and God Bless! Hope this is helpful...
I have had anxiety and panic attacks for years along with high blood pressure. I had a wonderful therapist that taught me how to lower my blood pressure and relax and reduce the anxiety and panic attacks by daily doing some quiet meditation. I get in a very quiet place with no distractions and close my eyes and put my mind on something that makes me feel relaxed (I picture a beach with the Carribbean water and try to hear the sounds of the water breaking on the shore... I like to visualize a sunset across the water and the palm trees gently swaying along the beach), then you breathe in to the count of 5 and then just relax with the picture in your mind and hold it a few seconds then release your breath to the count of 5 and do this for about 10 mins or so...however long it takes for you to begin to relax and you will be amazed at how well this helps. I do these meditation exercises any time I feel the anxiety or panic coming on or throughout the day just to keep myself calmer and it helps to lower your blood pressure as well.... I have also quit listening to the news as often and try to keep negative thoughts, people and actions out of my life because we become what we think and that is why we are really the only ones who can help ourselves... I believe in God and have a daily relationship and conversations with Him and that keeps me grounded and with a positive attitude even when things are going badly because I believe as a Christian that God has me in His arms and will never let me go and I feel safe knowing He is with me always... I hope this helps you and you are feeling much better very soon!!! God Bless and please don't resolve to alcohol and drugs... we all have so much more to experience in this life and we need to have a clear mind and healthy body to be able to experience all the wonders of life... God Bless!
