Getting cyst on scalp removed -- questions?

Hi there,
I have had a benign cyst on my scalp for a few years now. I am finally getting it removed next week. My question is, has anybody has this done? I am wondering what the aftercare will be? Will I have to wear a big bandage on my hair for days? Can I wash my hair?
The doc said it would be about a 1 cm incision with 2, maximum 3 stitches. He will just shave the hair exactly where the cyst is (about 1 cm).
I'm worried I will have to walk around with a big bandage on my hair and stitches sticking out.
Thanks!

I had a 3.5cm cyst removed from the back my scalp last month by a dermatologist. A very small amount of hair was cut to perform the work (no shaving). The local area was numbed so I felt nothing while the cyst was being removed. A couple of internal and external sutures were done to close the ~1cm cut, and I returned to the doctor for removal of the external sutures one week later. My scalp was quite sore for 2-3 days, with swelling in the local area for about 10 days. I took some tylenol for the soreness, which was what the doctor recommended, and could wash my hair 24 hours after surgery. Cost was $438 and not covered by insurance.

I had a 3 cm cyst removed from my head yesterday. I had it for ten years and it was growing. The doctor gave me two shots which hurt but were tolerable. The surgeon's nurse only shaved 4 hairs and put KY jelly on my head to move my hair away from the incision site. It took 5 minutes to get the cyst out. I have stitches that come out in a week and I can wash my hair in 24 hours. I took Motrin and am putting on Neosporin OTC to prevent infection. My skin isn't pulling anymore. Really glad I got it removed!!!!
Which doctor / surgeon did you use? If you are still happy with the result, I'd be keen to go with your recommendation.

How long did it take for the swelling on your face to go down?
Happy for you, you gave me courage, I am going to schedule an appointment too.
Hello had a large pilar cyst removed 4 days ago on top of head. Done by a dermatalogist in office procedure. It was quite large and he was still able to remove in about 15 minutes total time. Didn't feel a thing! Didn't have any swelling problems as some have mentioned was told to keep ice on it as much as possible for 24 hours. No swelling and helped mask the pain. The next day felt so much better no meds needed. Took several showers no problem. Was told to keep vaseline on the area until the stiches are removed in 2 weeks. Think since the doctor was young he is up on the latest and very confident about his skills. Very pleasant as well. Do have another smaller one that needs to be removed and will do as soon as this wound is healed. Would have done at the same time but wanted to be sure about the procedure and outcome. Such a relief to have it removed. The right doctor makes all the difference in the world!

Hi. I have just had the same procedure around 2 hours ago and I had two cysts removed from my scalp.
There may be blood and I was told not to wash my hair for 24 hours and then rinse it.
Procedure went fine and open yours is too.
Just had 3 removed outpatient surgery. They didn't shave my head. I got local injections of a numbing agent then he cut and scrapped and pulled them out. The first two didn't hurt but the last one did close to nerves and I felt every needle stick and extreme burning. After it was over they said take the day relaxing and take aspirin and yes I could shower and gently wash my hair. I wash shocked because I have had some taken out before less invasive and they gave me some pains and said not to wash my hair for a few days. I didn't need the pain pills last time I took one that day and I was fine. Now with this one I am in extreme pain, my scalp feels super tight and it burns and throbs, so no sleep last night. I am calling today to if they will get me something. I recommend asking for something.
Thank you so much for telling your story. I think I am in the exact situation as you were, and haven't had the courage to do anything about it. I brought it up to my doctor one time, and she mentioned she has not had luck removing these in the past - but after reading your story, I think I'll find just find a new doctor and get it over with. Thanks again!
