Getting cyst on scalp removed -- questions?

Hi there,
I have had a benign cyst on my scalp for a few years now. I am finally getting it removed next week. My question is, has anybody has this done? I am wondering what the aftercare will be? Will I have to wear a big bandage on my hair for days? Can I wash my hair?
The doc said it would be about a 1 cm incision with 2, maximum 3 stitches. He will just shave the hair exactly where the cyst is (about 1 cm).
I'm worried I will have to walk around with a big bandage on my hair and stitches sticking out.
Thanks!

I had one removed years ago by a doctor and had pain the next day but Tylenol helped. He did a few stitches and had no hair removal. It healed just fine. But a few years later another cyst developed and actually burst in the shower. I had a little hole and it healed just fine as well. I did not rub it and was very careful when washing my hair or blow drying. Did spray hairspray on the area as well.

No you don't have to ware a bandage just leave it alone it will heal better without it being covered .none can see it either it sounds worse than it actually is .I had one removed and no one even knew it .good luck

Thank you for your detailed description.
So was it yourdermatologist who removed it or you were referred to a surgeon. Not sure if I can skip the dermatologist and go straight for the surgeon, if in fact he/she will remove it.
Well, I actually found the whole thing like a walk in the park, I was worried about the freeze injection and it was a little bit sore but not that bad really , no hair shaved , all done in 15 minutes, healing is not painful just a little nipping, so glad i had this done only yesterday, so those that are worried, don't be , a bit of gentle breathing and taking your mind to a beach helps loads, go get it done, they can press on nerves and hurt your head and neck .

Dr. Sandra Lee in LA... worth the drive. Look her up on YouTube. I was going to go to her while visiting from NJ but mine has suddenly started growing and is very sore. I'm having it removed in two weeks and I'm terrified that it's cancer.
Did it come back benign??
I had 6 removed a little over a week ago. It was an outpatient procedure and they sedated me. One of them was infected badly and had adhered to my skin, which is rare. She had to cut the skin off completely. The others were normal, but I did let some of them grow pretty big, and the big ones are painful. You will need something stronger than regular Tylenol or Motrin afterwards. She prescribed Oxycodine and it was a life saver. I needed it for a good 6 days after, and I also took some 30 minutes before my stitches had to come out. My infected one formed a scab over the stitches, so she had to scrape that off first before removing them (ouch).
I was able to lightly wash my hair 24 hours after surgery, but I waited 2 days since I was in too much pain. 3 days after my surgery, my face completely swelled up, I could barely see out of my eyes. I called the exchange and she said it was completely normal. The day after, my forehead started bruising and hurt to touch. I'm on day 10 and the swelling is still there if I do too much, but it is almost gone now. She said the swelling is from the infected one, so I don't know if this is really normal for everyone.
Now I'm healing, it's not painful anymore other than my infected one, but it's not bad, Motrin works well. But they are itchy and all scabbed over. She said that is normal and to also wait another week before brushing hair and scrubbing hair in shower. I go back to see her in 2 weeks to make sure they are healing nicely.
I know next time to not let them get so large, and to take care of them right away. It wasn't the worst surgery I've had but I didn't like it very much. lol
Who do you make an appointment with to remove a cyst? A dr or a dermatologist? Either? I have one right at the typical man's bald spot on the top/back of my head. I'd say it's 1/2'' - 3/4'' wide and 1/4'' high. It's not infected and doesn't hurt or anything but sure is embarrassing when I can't wear a hat.
How many office visits will this take? I work nights so it's hard to make appointments for me unless I take a vacation week.
I would ask your doctor. I was referred to a surgeon, but if it's rather small then I would think a derm would take care of it.
I have had a cyst removed from scalp over 7 years ago and it has never returned! There are no signs of the surgery nor do I have any side effects. I am perfectly fine
I had a huge pilar cyst removed about 12 days ago. My cyst measured over 3 cm and I would never wait this long again. Mine was performed in the dermatologist office and I was given local anesthetic which she gave me extra because it was so big. I really didn't feel much during it although they did tell me it was bleeding a lot which I could see it after the fact . I had to get 10 stitches on the outside and three or four internal stitches which would dissolve. the first day I had little to no discomfort but when I woke up the next morning I was in a lot of pain I guess because the ibuprofen had worn off . Each day after got easier and it feels so good to have it gone. Like I said I did take ibuprofen and also an antibiotic that was prescribed to prevent infection. I went back to the doctor today they removed the stitches and gave me another antibiotic as there was one spot on the scar she was concerned with and did not want to chance an infection.
For those of you who've had cysts on the scalp and were put under, how much did that end up running you? My primary care physician tried doing it about a year ago, and couldn't make it happen. I was referred to a specialist, but they were unable to tell me how much it would be to get it taken care of and I was afraid to get slapped with a huge bill, so I haven't moved forward yet. Can anyone put my fears to bed and let me know how much it costs to be put to sleep and the cyst removed? They tried local anesthetic and no matter how much they applied, I could still feel them cutting into my scalp every single time. I don't want to feel that, nor do I want to hear the sound of my scalp being cut open ever again, haha!
Were you put under, or awake? How much did it cost for the surgeon to do it? I've been referred to a surgeon but am super concerned about the cost, because they haven't been able to give me a solid figure.
Thanks in advance!
