I am 31 dont have kids, never been pregnant. I spent 7 months with the problem majority of the ladies have described. None stop heavy bleeding, going through heavy flow pads 4-5 times a day, clotting, heavy painful cramping almost all month. I would only get 2 days break. I started carrying what seemed like a mobile pharmacy in my bag of vitamins to try and prevent becoming sick. I attempted to seek the help of an OBGYN did my research and thought i had gone for a reputable and local one. To my disappointment not only did i have a very hard time understanding a word he said to me, but it seemed like he didn't want to be bothered with my issue. As normal, i gave a urine sample and was so worried i decided to do a pap. He applied some cream(progesterone cream) and gave me 10 pills to take for 10 days. I wasn't told to call to reschedule or when to call for results. It was the worst doctor visit ever. It was my first time seeing a male OBGYN and i hated it. Never again. I stopped bleeding heavily for about 2 days and then it continued like i had never gotten help. Months passed and I began to feel weaker, always tired, irritable and i pretty much couldn't even do simple things like bend over and tie my shoe without pretty much hemorrhaging.

This past week i got the nerve to try and seek help again. I decided to go back to the clinic I first went to when i became sexually active. They were great. Luckily at the time of seeing the doctor i wasn't bleeding a lake so i went ahead and had my pap. I was given a higher dose of BC to take during the 2 week wait for my results. Now here is the scary part. I was told I have signs of a bacterial infection and the time I spent waiting and bleeding could have possibly made it worse. They drew some blood and prescribed some antibiotics. I have to take 2 of those 2 times a day with with food and my BC twice a day because they are too strong for me to take both BC pills at the same time. The antibiotics make me horribly groggy and nauseous by itself. The strong BC adds to it. I have lost my appetite and have to force myself to eat or else i get hunger like stomach pains followed by extreme nausea and tiredness. I wont know my results til Feb 1st. I am worried. But the only good thing is my bleeding has stopped. Unfair trade but I hope it all goes back to before the past 7 months soon.

Im 16 and I have just started having this problem again, the first time was in 7th grade and the doctors just said it was a hormonal imbalance and put me on birth control, I ended up not taking it anymore after 6 months because they didn't work. The heavy periods and clots didnt start agin until two days ago. I don't want to go the the doctor again because they don't try very hard at all to figure out whats really wrong, what the heck are they there for if not to help all the can! ?

I guess I'm fortunate and only bleed HEAVY HEAVY for 6 out of 7 days. I have been bleeding heavy since I'm 11 yrs old - I'm now 36. For years I was told that it is growing pains, I'm allergic to chocolate and it's all in my head. Having to leave school cause you have bled thru 3 pads, panties, shorts and pants is definitely all in my head. The one thing that would make things slightly easier is I would have to sleep the whole 2nd day of my period.

You may want to check with your doctor about endometriosis. About 5 years ago I had a hysteroscopy & laperoscopy done and they determined I had endo. They "zapped" it off and my periods became a "normal" persons heavy period. I some how got pregnant a year later :-) Life was great - for a couple of years... Now I'm bleeding worse than ever and the blood clots scare the c**p out of me. They are the size of my hand.

I guess I have to get back to the one gyn. that finally listened to me and have the surgury again...

Best of luck!

I went online hoping someone had the ansewers to this problem light great periods to the nightmare of pain, nonstop bleeding, clots like your liver is falling out, tired and weak to the point of passing out.   I am scared but I know I am still alive and will live through it. I look for the only close ansewer is a miss carriage at it's worst.  But I am not pregnet it's just my period.  I see family doctors, nurse practioners, specialist, even talk to old women all say the same it is in your head.  I'm I crazy. No women have lived though this and still told it is in you head.  I miss a week or more living like this. If I keep on living like this It will be in my head I will go crazy.  One week of the bleeding, pain, can't leave home for big liver clots or tired about to pass out.  There about 1 more week to regain my streath back.  I am not a lazy person.  My husband see me go through this he is scare I will bleed to death.  It is instulting to me to ask my husband to get out of bed 1 to 2 times a night to change bloody sheets, where I have bleed throw thickest pad I can buy, 2 extra thick towels, flowing blood to his side of the bed.  I had the pain of feeling I like I'm giving birth each month the pain is in the same spot as birth pain, only to clot and bleed non stop for 2 day or more. I will keep hunting for a doctor. As for my mind I will rest and hug my old friend my heat pad that massages my lower back. And say It's not me it's my body.  I may change history one day to help other, well, at least let other know your not alone and IT'S NOT I YOUR HEAD! Doctor say that when they don't know it's in their heads not yours. I thank-you all for sharing I do not feel so lost and alone. You give me the will to see my next Doctor I hope will not take my money as say the test are normal it's all in my head.  I belive if they do I scare the hell out of my fist head doctor bleeding through my clothes on his nice couch.  I can hear him say you need a doctor.  Only to hear my laughter while I say not the doctor said It's all in my head you fix my head. HA Ha. Love ya all going crazy or not?

I've had heavy periods since they started when i was fourteen. once when i was fifteen, i passed a clot that was about the size of a tennis ball, it sacred me a lot. The thing is i live wth my dad and he doesn't know much about this, so when this happened, he asked one of his friends about it and she siad its normal. I'm not convinced. I still get clots every period but i've never had another one quite as large. At any rate, it's made me nervous about going out during my period for fear of leaking and emabrrassing myself. I'm only eighteen and i've never taken birth control so i don't think it's a hormone imbalance. The "remedies" kinda scare me, like removing the uterus. Does anyone know what could be happening to me? This clotting is scaring me. :(

Hi! My sister experienced the same thing. she used to have 3 months of heavy periods with large clots that would stop for a week then resume again for 3 months.  she had checked with her OB and endocrinologist and was given a set of birth pills so her period would be controlled.  it worked for awhile but as soon as she finishes her medications, her heavy periods would resume.  she went back to her OB and was advised to take again the pills and while her period is controlled, she underwent vaginal ultrasound and a regular ultrasound (on the abdominal area) and the OB found out that my sister had a thick endometrium (lining of the uterus) which causes the clottings.  She had a minor operation called D&C and after that her period is bacame normal.

everyone that has posted on here really needs to have a doctor test insulin levels!!! i was just diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and they realized what it was because of the insulin levels. i had all the same symptoms, heavy heavy prolonged bleeding with giant clots, having the high insulin levels somehow makes your body not ovulate properly and pcos is one of the biggest reasons for infertility in women. i have a 3 year old child but ever since having her i hadnt had a normal peirod. im now 23 and so glad i found a doctor who actually ran enough tests to figure out what is wrong with me! one of the biggest things to treat PCOS is diet and exercise along with birth control pills or some other form of hormone suplement. hope this helps anyone! seriously look into this because it has made such a change in my life allready!!!!

Ladies,

I have the same symptoms as you have all mentioned and I have been diagnosed with endometriosis. ALL of you should talk to your gyn's and have them run some tests. However keep in mind that just because I have endo doesnt mean you do as well. I am hoping that since I recently had my tubes tied and had the majority of the endo removed that my "periods" will change and get better and no more clots/pain/ etc. Anyways good luck to you all!!!

I've had the same issues with heavy bleeding, clotting and extreme cramping. My doctor has changes my pills many times but that hasn't worked. No real cause just it sometimes happens in certain women. He has recommended an ablation to thin my uterus lining. The procedure is Her Option (name on the pamphlet info). I'm going to have my prework done soon to determine if I'm a candidate for in-office procedure rather than having to schedule out-patient. By the way I have a child and didn't have any issues getting pregnant and had a normal pregnancy. So no issues there. I would recommend you discuss the ablation procedure with your obgyn, the down side is that you can't get pregnant after the procedure (or highly unlikely). The upside is that most womens periods are completely eliminated after the ablation procedure.

I am now 36 years old and I have had this problem my whole life. Since puberty and my 20's I would go sometimes 3 months without a period then bleed heavy with big clots for up to 2 months straight. Sometimes this cycle would change so I can say I was never anything close to normal. I have gotten pregnant 3 times however. So I feel blessed to have had children. Of course I never knew I was pregnant until quite far along. Now that Im well in my 30's Periods are still abnormal and now I am passing clots just about daily even if the bleeding isnt there other than the clot and aftermath. This is weird. I have been to doctors on and off all this time with Normal hormone levels, Normal pap smears, Normal pelvic ultrasounds,, only a constant anemia can be diagnosed. This is all fine , I can deal with it not being some detectable source and therefore maybe its just the way my body works but the interference with my life and relations with my husband is annoying. I will be looking for a Herbalist or Homeopathic way to try and help myself. I am not and will not go on the pill and I want another option. I always joke that when they hand out Hysterectomies Im grabbing my camping gear and getting in line.  Good luck to all of you.

PCOS can be treated with Metformin and Birth Control. I have 2 beautiful children after 10 years of being told I"d most likely not have any unless I did invitro. My youngest is now 10 and I have been on the pill and metformin since she was 9 months old. My new doc informed me that i can come off the metformin since my insulin tests are fine. So I decided to come off. WRONG decision. I have been off for a few months and my period that had been down to 2 days of light flow and 3 of spotting with no cramping is now 7 days HEAVY and counting. Still cramping. Before I had kids and before I used metformin and yasmin my periods would sometimes go for months and I'd have to get shots to make them stop and shots to make them start. What a mess. I will most definitely be going back on Metformin. If for no other reason, Metformin is good for long term effects. Because women with PCOS have a higher rate of heart disease among other things. I take 500mg twice a day. I will be starting tomorrow. I feel your pain all of you with the infertility, weight gain, heavy bleeding. I used to have to wear 2 pads at once and sit on a towel myself so I know and I am sorry.
