Hello!
I need advice, because something strange is happening to me. For the past two months I am smelling smoke all the time. I keep on asking people around me if they smell it too, but the answer is no. I smell it everywhere/ in gym, in office, at home… Does anyone have any advice what this might be?

I've been smelling a cigarate smell for a few weeks. First 2 weeks, actually, I've been smelling bad odors (sweat, number 1 and 2) with onion-like scent. I thought there is someting wrong with my sweat, but my wife said I smell ok. Then I started to smell smoke, burned dust, and later more like cigarettes smoke. I found out about Phantosmia and went to ENT last Friday. The Dr didn't find anything, prescirbed antibiotics as precaution and sent me to take MRI. After that test, when he opened my nose canals to put camera inside, I've started feelieng better. That night we started using himidfinder with essential oils.
The smell is less intense and less often. I'm not sure if it is slowly going away? Or it's just a phase. Should I still do the MRI?
Can anyone tell me when it goes away, is it slow process of less and less intense smell, or should it be gone completely?

Thank you for your reply. I woke up with a heart burn. I had tums and was going back to sleep when I felt some dust in my nose and sneezed. I was smelling burning fire or smoke at the time. I had a sore throat a day ago and it has cleared up. Mystery of smelling smoke is solved thanks to your post ! I am type 2 diabetic and feet are feeling hot at night. That seems to be related to keeping better control of my sugar levels.
I cannot thank you enough! God Bless you. This works!!!!
I can't recommend a Dr., however I can tell you what has made a huge difference for me. I had the same smell in my nose. It drove me crazy. I started researching blogs online and I found several similarities that I had with other people with this problem. The main thing was GURD and a PPI inhibitor medication such as pantoprazole, nexium or several other PPI inhibitors. PPI inhibitors block your stomach and intestines from absorbing vitamins. One gentleman suggested taking vitamin B supplements. I went to my local GNC store and purchased their B complex 100 vitamins which contains several B vitamins. I took it about a week and I noticed the smell went away. I took the vitamins for about a month and then I forgot to take them. In about three days the smell came back. I immediately started taking them again and in a few days the smell went away again. Every time I forget to take them the smell comes back. I am positive they are solving the burnt electrical smell issue I am having. I tied another B complex and it didn't work as well for me as the GNC brand. I hope this helps you too. God Bless.
Hi! Don’t cry. It’ll be all right. I am on this website because I’ve had a burning smell for 2 months. I had a mild concussion in Sept, then a upper respiratory virus that led to bronchitis, then an infection with coughing. I still cough, can’t go to sleep until I inhale steam & have an inhaler, it’s allergic asthma, my doc thinks. I have to go to an ENT because of a sore in my nostril and a scope for my throat too. I have acid reflux, and a hoarse throat. For your asthma, U might want to have allergy tests by an allergist. I did, years ago, then got desensitization shots—which helped me tremendously; I have to go back for new allergy tests & probably new serum & shots. Taking out carpets, covering your mattress & boxspring, changing & covering your pillows with allergy proof covers, and air filtering devices might help. I am 60, my sense of taste diminished in my 50’s, but I always have a stuffy nose, been on antihistamines, Flonase. You also might want a plastic surgeon consult for past nasal surgery. The air you breathe goes through the turbinates, which helps to humidify & circulate the air. I have a humidifier in the House, because dry air can contribute to sinus infections. I also have a little facial/nasal humidifier I inhale for my nose, throat and bronchi. I use a Nettie Pot saline rinse for my nasal passages every night before bed. You can consult an attorney who has medical experience & litigates medical liability cases. Also consider your environment can cause asthma & allergies, there’s air pollution. Try changing your diet, take out gluten first, then dairy, then soy. An allergist can help you. For sinus infections keep your sinuses unclogged, there’s decongestants. Try a Naturopath consult. Hope this helps you. Stay strong, keep researching and trying different things, specialists. Hang in there.
I have Gerd and take a PPI. I have been smelling like a burning wood types smell for two months. When it first happened, I searched every inch of the house including electrical outlets, for burning. Went to my doctor for bronchitis & infection and told her, she just didn’t know about smelling burning odor. I just got some B-Complex at Costco, I’ll try your advice. I haven’t taken vitamins for awhile but got some because of being sick. If these don’t work, I’ll try GNC vitamins. Thanks!
To all of you on here....if you are smelling smoke the most likely cause is a sinus infection. I speak from experience. It could be a tumor (RARELY) but that is the most often cause. The last one I had didn't even cause a runny or stuffy nose.
I went to the doctor today and I personally don't have a sinus infection but am smelling wood fire smoke. I live in a home with drafts and have neighbors that burn wood so I assume I am smelling that most of the time. She didn't think that it was serious, and if it was a tumor, I would be having other issues. Anyone else smell wood fire smoke in their home with no wood fire?
I know I’m late to this topic but I have a good idea what this is. I’m very sensitive to bacterial, molds and mildew smells. I can smell mold and mildew incredibly well when most people don’t even notice. The “smoky” smell is likely coming from the HVAC. I notice it especially with high-efficiency systems and cars like VW Beetles which are susceptible to mold growth in their cooling systems. I find in the winter on really cold days when the HVAC runs a lot that those microbes are “baking” or “burning” and that gives that cigarette-type smell. Almost the same smell occurs when seasonal changes occur and the systems transition from heat to cool in the same day. I recognized the smell was a version of what I smelled from our micro lab during testing and plate incubation or cleaning. While it’s always a good idea to first rule out any medical conditions with your physician, you may find you are simply very adept, more so than others, at sensing these microbes as they are responding to environmental changes.
thank you for your response. After a round of antibiotics given to me by my ENT doc, the smoke smell is back even stronger. I have another appt with him so not sure where we'll go from here. Location doesn't seem to matter...if the "smell" is there, it is there.
What struck me was that you said it feels like it burns the inside of your nose. The "smoke smell" I have is VERY acrid...not like wood or cigarette smoke...and it does feel like it burns the inside of my nose. I have two prescription nasal sprays that help for a little while but it comes back within an hour or two. Nothing has shown up in brain CTs. I do have sudden onset double vision in one eye (started 4 years ago) and have wondered if there is a link to that or to the high dose steroids I was on for the vision issues. The smoke smell comes and goes...I'll occasionally have 2-3 days where it is just gone. I too have discovered some food intolerances and have been on a plant-based diet for about 2 mos.
I'll try that! Thanks
