Had mirena for 2 years now. I have bled, cramped & remained severly, i mean SEVERELY BLOATED for the ENTIRE two years. Horrible breast pain....NO SEX DRIVE (poss. due to constant bloating & blood non-stop.....that'll kill any mood). No health insurance, no other BCP is cheap enough or agrees with me......basically i have ruined my life due to my effed up stupid body. I hate it. Hate it. I am 30 & have not had sex or a normal blood-bloat-cramp free day in over 2 years. I need help & i cant get it.

Hey Ladies, it sounds like most of you are reporting the same issue...you are all having your menses start up again after the Mirena IUD has been in place for 2 to 3 yrs. I too have experienced a return of monthly bleeding. I had it place in May of 2010 and started spotting about 3 months ago (~2.5 yrs after the IUD was placed). Each month my bleeding gets a little heavier and lasts a little longer. This month it was up to 3 days of light, but continuous spotting. I wonder if it will continue to get heavier and longer each month. It seems the most logical conclusion for this return of bleeding (with no other major lifestyle or stress changes) is a drop in the amount of drug being released from the IUD. Since my bleeding is not too obnoxious yet I plan to wait it out a few more months and see what happens. If it continues to get worse I will ask my doctor to replace it with a new one. I love the convenience of this IUD and the benefit of no period.

I hate my body :( I wish I was born a male. I am having it removed asap. I can't put up with the bloating, and the constant nonstop bleeding and buying tampons and being disgusting. I guess my body just does not accept any kind of contraception. The pill hates me, the shot is just the same as mirena....nuva ring has been the only thing that is problem free, and of course its $80 a month that i refuse to spend. I will not be able to go on any form of BTP now. I am horribly depressed.

When it was time for my first Mirena to be removed, my GYN knew that the strings were going to be difficult to grasp as they had almost fully gone into my uterus. Fortunately, there were short sections that had stayed outside and curled against my cervix so she was able to grasp them with the removal tool. My husband never felt the strings from the first Mirena or the second one I had put in this past July (2012). I occasionally have a very light period for one day, the hormonal mood swings, and very rarely cramping (I was never prone to cramping).

For those that are experiencing something resembling a period rather than spotting when you have had the Mirena for 4 or more years, it is quite possible that the hormones are running out or have run out. Mine was replaced two months prior to the 5 year mark because I have high blood pressure and if I were to get pregnant the medicines I take are contraindicated for use during pregnancy.

Yes !!!! This happened starting this Sunday ... I haven't had a period since Ive had it and I went to the bathroom and there was like strings of blood in the toilet and when I wipe.. Then last night the same thing happened, I also had sharp pain and cramping !! What is wrong with me ? Did you ever find out what it is ? I hope its not pregnancy either -___-

Soooo i just paid a million dollars & had the Mirena taken out. I dont feel 100% but i definitely feel better, & i feel less bloat/pressure.....i REALLLLLY hope my belly goes down as time passes. The doctor told me my uterus was swollen & my body was rejecting the implant. I also cant handle progestrin (sp?) which is in every form of birth control, so basically i am f***ed. I will have "reverse pregnancy" meaning every preggy symptom u can imagine, which ive been experiencing 100%. He said i will continue to have issues if i use a BC with progestrin. Nuva Ring never gave me issues EVER, & it has extremely low releasing progestrin levels. Unfortunately, its also between $90-115 a month. Who can afford that? I'm extremely depressed & mad at my body. Im glad to have that horrible foreign object OUT of my body, but i guess its heavy, 10 day periods & disgusting condoms forever. I'm 30, & everything effects me negatively now. I always thought my body was so strong & tolerant. :(

Same thing for me. I got the Mirena put in January 2010. Haven't had a period until this week. Crazy PMS, terrible cramps and heavy heavy heavy bleeding. 4 days later it hasn't let up. Why?

Hi Rach, I was wondering, if you had a hysterectomy, how are you still having a period? I have been reading all these posts and you are the first to have had a hysterectomy. I am not ready for a hysterecotomy, I am 44 and still have a great uterus for childbearing. I have blood clotting issues, PCOS and this is the only thing I can use. Hoping it all regulates. I have had mine since July 2011.

I'm so glad I found his website to know I'm not alone! I had my Mirena IUD put in in 2009 and didn't have periods until about 6 months ago. Obviously I was pissed because I had gotten spoiled. My periods were normal (lasting about 4-6 days) then this month, it lasted a day and a half. I'm hoping my body has re-adjusted and next month it heads for the hills. I haven't had any problems out of it. Even when I got it put in, I didn't have any problems.

I have the same IUD and I've been having a semi regular period the whole time I've had it in and it's been about three years.

take a breath. calm down. I'm going to keep mine short. Yes insertion sucked but it was over in 30 seconds. Hot pack to help sleep the next two days then fine. 3 years no period. Today noticed some spotting. ran to the computer and saw some pretty scared posts. And started getting scared myself.

Then I stopped and thought... I have been more stressed than usual the past few days, walking a lot, and not sleeping. So.... I'm going to monitor for the next 24hrs stay calm and if it gets worse I'll call my doctor.

Before you freak out ask yourself:

Has my routine changed at all in the last few days?

Have I been stressed lately?

Have I been sleeping?

your body reacts to changes in your routine.  Give yourself 24 hours.

use common sense.  Your body is meant to shed.

Obviously if you are in serious pain or bleeding like an open wound go see a doctor.  But otherwise.  please. take a breath. I'm glad I did.
