Me again, spider bite lady. I will say I do get ingrown hairs which develop into abscesses somewhat regularly. Like maybe 3 to 4 times a year so I know how large and painful they can be. So maybe my spider is an ingrown, but the neat little pea sized blister atop a knot I'd not noticed this morning makes me think not. It doesn't matter. If it's large, hot to the touch and discolored or like someone else described as a "crater" the ER is not overkill. In fact, I was going to go to urgent care, but my ex's girlfriend advised me to skip it and go straight to the ER as the urgent care was likely to send me there anyway. She was 100% correct. When you have a knot or abscess or pretty much any health problem you've never had before it is definitely easy to get alarmed. As a waxer for many years I'm fairly familiar with ingrown hair abscesses.

The heat, radiating redness, and very dark discoloration made me pause on this one. Because of the odd little blister I am 100% sure this was not an ingrown hair, but what if there had been no odd little blister and I'd just brushed it off as another abscess? Well this is not just another abscess and I'll tell you it went from red to black in hours. Even if I got into see my regular doctor tomorrow it could have been so so much worse. The skin is starting to die and flake on the top already just a few hours later. It looks just like the early stages of a brown recluse bite, which it is definitely not.

The point is it is possible to be a paranoid hypochondriac and run to the ER too soon and too much unnecessarily. It's also possible to be someone like me who continually downplays everything and has to virtually prodded with a cattle prod to go to the ER. Not because I don't want to "overrun" the ER. Because I hate sitting in waiting rooms and it's freaking expensive. Do research and ask for opinions from knowledgeable folk. Most of us have at least one level headed person in our lives who can offer reasonable advice. Even an ingrown hair can become so infected it causes cellulitis and the tissue starts to die; like the person who posted who ended up in the ICU over one, it's not the cause of the infection that warrants the visit, it's the severity.

A medical professional turning away a patient when you obviously haven't taken the time to understand the intricacies of their situation. In so little as 10 seconds you could read and assess that this patient is looking for help with a case that they have no grasp on but the nearest they can attribute it to would the visual charachteristics of an ingrown hair but it's more painful and obviously must be something quite a bit more than your day to day ingrown hair.

And we wonder why just a few posts up we've got someone heating an exacto knife to just cut through 'the first 3 layers of skin' on his own at home to take care of this problem on his own.

Nice to see someone so educated and we'll spoken to be working on an ER. That's sarcasm by the way

It could be a staph infection. Which is VERY much possible seeing as they picked at it. So yes, go to the ER. If it is staph, and you leave it untreated, you can die.

They always say don't do this but I get ingrown hairs now and again and they're never small. I always pull the hair out ( or pull back layers of the skin everyday until I see it) . the thing is you can always feel the "milky green pus" lump where the hair is. Well if you let that sit there, the folicle will close and that will get bigger and could do damage. Its always a tad painful but I grab the lump, poke a hole with a sterile needle then push all of it out. You will see all the grossness come out which is good because now it's not stuck under your skin. But you want to keep pushing until it bleeds where you can see no more discoloration. Then wipe it down. It will slowly feel and you might have to do it a bit more depending on the area. But I have never had an issue after.

Okay seriously? Why is everyone so intent on making everything a conflict. If you are having a problem that you don't know how to deal with go to the ER it might be worse than you think. It might be infected or might not even be an ingrow hair it might be a disease. Stop making random problems up when we are all here for the same thing, to get help and to give help. If you are not a doctor and are not qualified to treat and diagnose a patient, do not give advice such as to not go to the ER if you think it's an ingrown hair because you have not seen it how could you possibly be so sure that he/she should not go. ER exist for a reason you go there when you think theres a possible threat to you're life. So do as such if you think there is. Some of you might be giving the wrong advice that is causing people to go to these places too late and get a serious infection, etc.
Thank you.

If you were a medical professional, I would think you would know the correct spelling of things like
Professional
Absurd
Hospitalization
Emergencies See the trend here?

You're clearly not in the medical profession because you would know how to spell.

1) Please read your post prior to publication (for grammar and spelling errors). 2) If you are indeed a "medical professional," as you stated, you must be of age to vote (for or against whatever healthcare system you the appropriate). 3) Please don't be so self righteous and pointing fingers regarding someone going to "your ER." The readers/posters on here are your fellow humans. Be nice. Be positive. Don't be mean.

alot of you guys are nuts(aimed specifically at the ones aimed at the "medical professional" be it for or against)
ER maybe a stretch but what i can tell you, is if your pubic area, mind you, one of the most SENSITIVE parts of your body is inflamed and has been for several hours or even over a day or week like most of these cases up here, having blood and puss come out and ESPECIALLY if you are a young person whos never experienced this its scary and you want help and you want a quick solution i.e the Emergency Room.
Sometimes its hard to make appointments and the fact is most of the comments dont even have a grasp as to what is going on some hell most of us thought we had a dang STD.

You are not a p***y You are in pain You just want the pain to stop and You want your dang-gone crotch to stop hurting.
Dont be a-holes guys just cause you decided to do it yourself at home and/or either accustomed to it doesnt mean the rest of us here on the internet, looking for an instant answer freaking out here, aren't.

Whatever, I had to go to the emergency room because I couldn't take the pain caused by an ingrown hair on my armpit. It turned into an abcess. Don't tell people what they need to do if you don't know their situation. If you're a real medical professional, you would understand or better yet, empathize with someone that has a bump around that area. besides, if you worked in an ER, you would know that they choose what case is the worst and they go in order of importance. Someone that really needs to be seen will be seen! Go rant somewhere else? Why are you even here? Where's your ingrown hair?

You can't start a sentence with, "So".

Wow! I completely understand how annoying it can be when someone utilizes the E.R. for a non-emergency related issue. That being said, I sincerely hope your bedside manner (a doctor's approach or attitude toward a patient) is a bit more compassionate than this.

Lmao! I love this... especially when you asked why that person is even here & where's his/her ingrown hair! I didn't like the snotty attitude from them either.
