I noticed this morning the ignored ingrown hair I had was red with a minor swelling! By late afternoon it has since become the size of a football almost! After being told the doctor could not drain it due to the severity of it! I will need to go back to the hopspital tomorrow for another attempt at an I.V (this failed 3 times this evening!) Also to drain it!
So in response to anyone that lets this go...they become seriously swelled and infection can travel into your bloodstream if not treated.
I was pretty lucky! I now have a huge red swollen thigh and an infection through my leg muscle!
Also will be returning for another painful bout with my ingrown hair that turned abcess!!
I just learned this today, feel silly really, but using a single bladed razor also helps with ingrown hairs!
Just felt the need to leave my ignored ingrown hair and the result if left untreated story!
Thank you

Funny you mention NOT to go.. since my mom IS a doctor.. and she TOLD me to go! If an infection gets that bad, it spreads and sometimes it is WAY too painful to deal with. My DOCTOR recommended that I go too because it was THAT bad. It hurt to sit down because of where it was too, so I was taken in right away. I had to be given something to numb the area and it was worked at for almost half an hour because no hair was visible. All they could do after searching was give me a shot to 'hopefully' try to keep the infection away, but i didnt see the hair itself until about 3 months later under the skin, and when I poked and tweezed it, it was SO long.
I guess all you can do is go to your doctor and do what THEY recommend.. not what some 'claimed' medical professional on here says to do. If they really were a medical professional, they more than likely wouldnt be on here, spelling something as easy as 'stuff' wrong.

For all those that feel the need to insult doctors and nurses....just remember two words........1. General 2. Practice....is that not basically what a medical professional has to do is go through a routine of various possibilities to figure out a cause..........Because if we knew what was wrong we would not a doctor.......and a doctor would not need a nurse and so on and so forth. And no I am not a doctor I just play one on t.v.
so like what about the ingrown hair problem? you guys are so dramatic. as a medical professional, you should be giving the advice, and im sure everyone realizes the ER is not even gonna take a patient in for an ingrown hair.
INGROWN HAIR SOLUTIONS: -Do not squeeze it! When its red and painful, leave it alone, apply lotion because its important to keep it moisturized, do not exfoliate. When the infection has cleared and its just a little problem, use a warm/hot wet towel to open the pore and the hair should just come out. If it doesn't, feel free to use tweezers to help it out but DO NOT puncture the skin.

well most ER's are taken advantage of, and going to an ER for an ingrown hair is not appropriate. If you do, you will probably wait for hours as there are "emergencies" that will be seen in the ER before you. I would suggest a clinic or Gyno, or your regular doctor you attend. If this is a reoccurring event talk to a Dermo. If you have thick coarse hair, ingrowns are and will continue to be a problem. I salute all out ER nurses and doctors, as they are most generally under staffed and over worked. If my mother was a doctor,I would not waste type inquiring on the Internet with medical questions, I would ask her. Maybe she would have informed that you waited too long to treat the "ingrown hair"............
I have gotten those ingrown, pus filled bumps twice in my life. I found with the last one that I sanitized it, let it pus out, and dealt with it for a week or so. I was scared at first. My dad, a doctor, said I could go to a doctor and get it taken care of but I didn't want to deal with that. Finally, it went away on it's own after a month. I recommend taking care of it hygenically like with witch hazel, hydrogen peroxide or any anti bacterial (i use egyptian magic that is olive oil and beeswax.) I think it should go away on it's own, don't worry! Most small issues like this tend to get healed by the body if you are a normal, healthy person. Your body will fight it on it's own even if it has a small infection and eventually will bring any bacteria to the surface and purge it. I get these because of sex with my husband. We aren't doing anything unusual, just regular, no waxing or STDS, it's just something that happens. I don't get nervous anymore, I just use patience. My boyfriend doesn't think it's a big deal. He helps me take care of it when it happens.
Hahaha, you are very ignorant. When i was pregnant with my daughter, i got an ingrown hair so bad, that i could hardly walk. It was exruciating and very swollen. I tried all the warm compresses, but it would never come to a head, and even if i did, it was to sensitive to even try to squeeze. The only thing that i could find to relieve the pain was sitting in hot bath water, and even that was only temporary. So i my hubby ended up driving me to the hospital at like 1 a.m. to have it lanced. It was painful, but was alot better afterwards. Ever person has the right to go to the emergency room, and for you to say that is obsurd is ignorant. Its not your place to judge what we feel is medically necessary. I doubt anyone would go to the hospital, wait for five hours, and pay hundreds of dollars for no reason. And even if they did, you being a "medical professional" should appreciate the business, and not judge the patients.
You all need to stop attacking each other because I petty misspellings!
Now, the reason this page was set up was to answer this poor woman's question. So, I personally have the same thing going on at the moment. It's horrible isn't it!!! What I normally do is try to stop messing with it for a while and this normally leads to mine being less red and puffy. Then as it's settled back down, see if you can squeeze the hair out of it, but gently, if you do it to hard it can cause scaring and just get it all red and puffy again. If that doesn't work I recommend making an appointment with a dermatologist. However, if you think it's infected then i recommend going to your local urgent care, the place where they deal with things like strep throat and other small things like that, going to the E.R. will not only be an overexageration but it will take way longer.
Best of luck!

I get these very often do to waxing I just use tend skin and they go away within a few days. It's kind of pricey but it's worth it. I hope this helps : )
excuse, me, Mr. "Medical Professional." Learn how to spell absurd! You are telling this person what a ridiculous idea they had, yet I'm assuming you went all the way through med school and still can't spell absurd? THIS is the true problem with American healthcare.
I once had a patient that had an ingrowing pubic hair. It then developed into cancer and he was dead within 6 months. So be very careful and dont underestimate them.
I think the reason it happens so much is becuase the skin covers itself when flacid. must be even worse for uncircumsized folks
warm cloth. hot shower or bath/
then needle poke to break the pore /
squeeze like crazy, pulling skin taught and pushing from underneath is a good idea.
careful not to go too friday the 13th on it. scars are an explaination themselves. but get it.
more often than not, for me at least, there's a hard ball under the skin under the pore you don't want to get. but you DO want to get it.then the hydrogen peroxide, for sure neo sporin sure, bandaids maybe.
seems *like this is the remedy. just dropped about 2 tons in chips off my shoulder from finding this site.
also was freaking. have been for a few months......no STDs. woo!
breathe out gentlemen.
breathe out.
but yeah, any tips to stop them before they start?
shaved too much as a lil kid.

9i am so happy i found this thread... well for about a few days now i have experienced the same thing. i shaved and about a week later i noticed this pimple... i popped it and it turned into just this bump with no pimple head on it. i squeezed it again and it looked as though my skin had peeled away. i was so horrified because along with this came excruciating pain, i couldnt sit down, and it hurt to walk. i kept the area clean and put just a dot of neosporin on it (my overly hairy boyfriend suggested this since he is used to the ingrown hairs and remembered his first one... on his booty lol)... nonetheless it worked and it is now well on it's way to recovery. to the person for the ER comment. it is obvious that you are not one who is concerned about your body. when a person notices a change in their appearance that they feel may not be exactly normal, why would they not go to someone who could check it out?
Any infection that is ulcerated and infected warrants medical attention - even an ingrown hair that you have picked at can poison the blood. Sure like everything try and remedy it yourself, but if it isn't getting betterit does deserve medical advice - ignore the "proffesonioal" as they are incredibly ignorant and probably work at rite aid
