This was a year ago, but, I just had to say something! Whitestang86, you failed to mention how they wrote "emergincies" rather than "emergencies", and "hospitalzation" rather then "hospitalization". I'm sorry, that was really funny. Anyways, I have one of those little buggers (ingrown hairs), and it is driving me NUTS!!

Did u ever figure out what it was and how did u resolve it? thanks!

Look. This can be a much more serious thing than just a ingrown hair. Now I am a really clean person who showers every day sometimes twice a day and have never ever had any big boils or wierd infections on my skin or anything. then one day There was a little pain in my pubes like on top of my pubic bone and when i looked at it there was a spot what I thought looked like it was a ingrown hair. So I plucked all the hairs i could see in that area which was smaller than a dime. it went from being less than dime size to golf ball size in 3 days, and with the constant pain of my skin burning and hurting. It was almost unbearable I told my bf I needed to go to the ER. He tried to say it was just a ingrown hair and I needed to wait till it came to a head and then pinch it and i would go away. My response was a ingrown hair is not supposed to feel like this. So he took me to the ER. When the nurse took a look she said "wow that looks painful. I'm not going to touch it. Let me go get the dr to take a look." When he came in and looked at it he said it was a abscess probably from a ingrown hair or a nick from a razor and it had gotten infected. The infection had gotten down into the deeper tissue and that it would need to be cut open, drained, then packed with gauze that would be left inside for 3 days to drain any of the remaining infection. The dr ordered a MRSA (Staph Infection) culture to be done, IV Antibiotics, and Dalata in IV for pain medicine. He said when you come back in 3 days we would have the results of the culture. They did all that which still hurt a lot but the pain meds helped a lot too and then sent me home with 10 days worth antibiotics and 4 days hydro condone. To make a long story short, when I went back to get the packing pulled out and the results were positive for MRSA. It hadnt really improved any in the 3 days so had to have it drained again with basically the same procedure as the 1st visit to the ER. Only differsnce the 2nd time was a much more aggressive dr who gave me nothing for pain and then cut it open deeper and pinched it over and over to get the puss and blood out. Really it was probably the most painful thing i have ever experienced in my life. So. Incase you are unfamiliar with MRSA or staph google it. Its like "the new super bug". It is highly contagious. It can get into your blood and cause all kinds of problems and if not treated with the right antibiotics can hospitalize and even kill you. So if that's not a good enough reason to waste the ERs time cuz "its just a ingrown hair" think again! It may be life or death!

Long but IMO some good advice?

First: To the med school dropout (most probably a CNA at a nursing home) stop giving medical advice that is way off base and I fear you may have prevented some people with question that needed immediate care not to ::bother:: ther ER! Many people believe they have an ingrown hair when it's actually a cyst and it is getting infected. If squeezing it and using sterile tweezers doesn't result in a hair coming out, don't keep trying to do it. I've had ingrown hairs that I "took care of" after trying and trying I ended up having to go to the ER because I had a HUGE egg shape bump that turned out to be so badly infected. I told the doctor that I felt stupid, etc. He assured me not to because it was so infected, it was spreading. I ended up with a huge hole that he had to pack and put in 2 stitches to hold it together. Didn't learn my lesson, happened again. Turned out it was a cyst that I was trying to dig into to find the hair that I just "knew" was there. My PCP sent me to the hospital (they have non emergency and emergency triage nurses evaluate you and put you where you belong) So please do not take advice from some interwebs "medical professional" who can't spell and does not have a clue how the ER is run. Getting an immediate appointment with a dermatologist was just not working out in my case (my doctors office made the calls on my behalf) Another big hole this time a lot of puss! The latest one I have now, I poked with for 5 minutes. No success, I gave up. I put antibacterial ointment on it and put on loose clothes. ALWAYS WEAR LOOSE CLOTHES AFTER YOU SHAVE THE BIKINI LINE! Also, shave in the direction that the hair is growing. Ya'll may know that already. I didn't! I was taught to go against it for a better result.

I see the dermatologist tomorrow and from all of my experiences with this (I am too ashamed to admit how many times I've forgotten the previous infections and gave it a whirl!) It actually feels like a mix of a cyst and an ingrown hair with a side of a bit of an infection.

If it hurts and looks really infected, try getting into a dermatologist ASAP. If the infection is making you concerned, go to the ER. They have specialists on call. NO to urgent care. They can't do anything for that, they aren't equipped to do the procedure. Most of their diagnosis' come from a central medical system look up (A medical Google, if you will, so it's hit or miss)

Hot compress using a moist, clean washcloth. 30 minutes on, 30 minutes off. That tends to draw a head, then give popping a go. Non serious issues can turn extremely serious when you have an infection and you don't know it as a first timer.

I'll end this unintended novel with some SIMPLE TIPS:

No head on bump, hot, moist compress. 30 minutes on/off. Results in a head, use clean hands and tweezers in good light, go for it. Never dig or use sewing needles! Still nothing, antibacterial ointment (not cream) wear loose clothes. If it just starts to get larger and red/purple, get to a dermatologist before it gets serious. Not fear mongering, it can be really serious. If you see the red around it spreading at a good pace, get to the ER even if you have a few days to go until your appt. with the dermatologist. If you haven't made an appointment yet, go to the ER. Remember, there is tissue surrounding there, the infection will spread. They will have to (in some cases) remove surrounding tissue. Cosmetic yuck, healing and pain double.

I make no claims that I'm in the medical field, I make no claims that I'm not. Lessons I learned well before I became educated. So for you all young and old first timers with this, as my Gran would say "stop fussing with it and see someone!"

Good luck, be safe, be smart

Excuse me, but did you say the size of a hamburger? If there was a bump the size of a hamburger on your pubes you definitely should have seen a doctor.

I'd also like to add that it's "emergencies", not "emirgincies". Thank you.

you can't even spell absurd, hospitalization, stuff, emergencies, or put together a proper sentence. You sure seem like you have 8 years of higher education (plus residency) under your belt. BTW: Don't disagree with your message.

Too long to quote, but THANK YOU for making an intelligent suggestion. Listen ladies, it does NOT matter what others say, think, or claim to be. It is YOUR body, and yours alone. It is not "humiliating" or "disgusting" to get a professional opinion, or tell your mom. They have seen the same exact thing, if not worse many many times. I JUST got home from the hospital because of this. If you want, you can even ask to have a female dr./nurse. There is a good chance that it is just an ingrown hair, and will drain itself in a couple if days. HOWEVER it could be any number of things. Unfortunately they can be very dangerous. MRSA, staph are the big ones. Both LIFE THREATENING if not treated! To you young girls PLEASE go see someone who us qualified to examine what is going on. It has nothing to do with STDs and there is nothing about this that will upset your mother, father etc. Don't think that these comments are facts! Or a diagnosis! Because it just isn't. Make an appt. w your Dr. if you can wait that long, ( 1 week or less ONLY! ) if you can't get in before that, go to the ER. MOST urgent care facilities will just send you to the hospital because the area it is in is so delicate. Save your money, (avoiding urgent care), the worry, the pain, and stop taking forum comments as medical facts. Most of it is all sh*t.

These people are not doctors. Nor am I. I just am in nursing school, and have a CNA license in the state of NY.
Most importantly, take care of yourself! and don't squeeze and pop until it's ready. You can cause the infection to travel, swell more and even get into your blood. Possible sepsis. You will know its ready when the "head" is clearly visible and starting to ooze a clearish, white fluid. Keeping hot packs on it will sped that process up.

I like that you misspelled 'absurd 'and 'emergencies ' while emphasizing that you're a medical professional.

Seriously? You are an id**t. & yet another jackass as a "professional". If you are honestly a "professional" you should be fired & lose any sort of license you have. I wouldn't want anyone I know to take any sort of professional advice from you. If the area gets infected bad enough it could lead to staph infection. Which could kill you. & it is indeed possible with something as little as an I grown pubic hair. A "professional" would know that & not say something as stupid as you just did. There are so many people who have delt with an ingrown hair (or several) & have tried to take care of the issue at home & it gets worse. Im not saying you shouldn't try to take care of it yourself first because sometimes if you get rid of the hair the right way & actually clean & take care of the area, the problem is solved. No, you shouldn't go to the ER at the FIRST sign of an ingrown hair that isn't infected or anything, but DO NOT hesitate going one bit if it gets worse (gets bigger, more red & swollen/full of puss & more painful) Its so easy to get an infection & sometimes can be harder than you think to get infection to go away or keep it from getting worse. It might sound stupid to some people but believe it or not, something as little as an ingrown hair can cause a lot of problems for you very quickly & in some cases can lead to deadly infections.
