Wow... So many people with my same issue... Well... Sort of....
I will try to "cliff notes" this as much as possible......
Symptoms: Lower back pain, BOTH kidneys are swollen and tender to the touch, when I press lightly 3 inches under the bottom of my sternum, it hurts, at the end of the day my feet and calves are swollen, I have bags under my eyes.

History: I am 26. At 15, I was diagnosed with manic depression and I tried to end my life with about 30(or so, didn't count them out, it was a hospital sized bottle) Tylenol. Went to the hospital sick as hell... Had enzyme test done and came back "ok." Never really drank. At the age of 16, I finished a bottle of Taquilla and got violently ill.. Did not touch alcohol until I was 21...(seriously.. But I smoked pot) At 24, I suffered from depression again and would drink a fifth of vodka every two nights, for about 3 months straight. Then, I sought help. At 26, I started experimenting with "RC's" such as methlyone and JWH. I am still 26. I no longer do Methylone or jwh... but I now cough up black and BOTH kidneys hurt like hell. I have not been to the DR as I am a stubborn guy... But after reading all of the posts, and after scaring the sh*t out of myself, I am going to go....

I wanted to outline my mistakes for you all.. And I will come back and update you all on what I found out... I wish I could take back the choices I have made in my life... I hope I have not totally screwed myself up... But it is not looking to bright.

I hope this can help someone, somewhere, somehow.... Everyone.. I know my choices were not right. But please pray for me. I am very scared.

God bless and hope all your problems work out and dreams come true.

I'm 25 and I've had this problem for 2 years. It started off every so often after drinking, my kidney would hurt. It would feel like high pressure, as though my kidney was inflated. Full of water. I thought absolutely nothing of it as it was very sporadic. However the severity and regularity increased, and particularly with beer - half a bottle of lager and 30 minutes later I could be in pain. Fast forward a year and I've had blood tests, urine tests, ultrasound, CT scan and radioactive tracer. Rather than being occasionally with alcohol, its now almost every time I drink alcohol and even sometimes when I haven't. My doctor initially had no idea what it was, after my blood and urine looked OK. However I researched online and discovered PUJ obstruction and mentioned it. It was then that I got sent for an ultrasound.

I'm currently awaiting the results of my CT and MAG3 tracer scans, which should tell me the nature and severity of the blockage. The specialist suggested that it's congenital, so surgery should be an option. I'll find out soon.

MY MAIN RECOMMENDATION: Do your own research, badger your doctors, and don't accept any pain as normal. Don't be scared to go to the doctor, develop a rapport with them and don't fear you're wasting their time. If you leave this pain for too long, your kidney function will become diminished and your kidney could need to be removed. Book that appointment. :)

you may have some liver damage. i used to go out and binge drink on a night out. i ended up with panreatis and gastric problems, and now have a fatty liver which is the start of liver disease. My advice stop drinkingor cut down, i only started drinking at weekends from age of 33 and now 40. Drinking causes many health problems. If you drink take milk thistle herbal tablets they help to detox the liver and drink lots of wate;-)

Drinking causes you your kidneys to release more fluid from your body by blocking a hormone known as ADH. That is, alcohol works like a diuretic and this is why you tend to urinate more when you are drinking. Therefore, if you are drinking excessive amounts of alcohol in a single setting, you are overworking your kidneys. This could be the cause of the dull-aching sensation in the area of your kidneys. But don't take these symptoms lightly. Consider it your body's way of warning you that your drinking is starting to have a negative impact on your internal organs.

The symptoms some of you mention sound like they could be due to many things ranging from nephritis (inflammation of the kidney) to a blockage of kidney function (i.e., a kidney stone). Therefore, you should consult a Physician Assistant/Physician if you continue to have this pain after you've stopped drinking for a few days. The PA/Physician will run some tests on you to make sure your problems aren't being caused by a more serious problem.

For now, stop drinking alcohol for a while (at least 4 weeks) and avoid caffeine. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. If you want to continue drinking after a 4 week period, keep your intake limited to 2 drinks each night that you decide to drink. If you continue to abuse alcohol, you may eventually cause irreversible damage.

I feel you so much. Reading these posts over the last year and a half, I am amazed at how such young people such as yourself are affected so early by alcohol. I have been a drinker all my life and never saw any ill-effects until I hit at 55. Did you seek medical help at any point? If so, what were you told? Again, my sincere sympathies.

I was having pain in my lower right stomach also and had a CT scan and all kinds of test and nothing, finally I went to an Internist and he did a really thoural hands on exam and he found I did have a pulled stomach muscle and sent me to a Chiropractor and he confirmed it and after 1 month of work it went away. With that said I also use to be a heavy drinker and after going on a binge I would get a pain again in my lower right quadrent, but nothing like the pulled muscle. So I just quit drinking, hardest thing I ever have done.............. and I am pain free. So you could have a pulled muscle, but you also could be doing major damage by drinking too..........................

I've been a weekend drinker for over 18 years and I am 43 now. For atleast 3 times during this time I have had these terrible pains on my right and left lower back. I did some tests at once and they told me one of my kidneys was swollen and the other was abnormal. That is what the doctor told me. It seems that when I drink a lot it accumulates and then the pain attacks me severely. I have been recommended to drink a lot of coconut water which I am doing. My pain was so severe two days ago when I couldn't breathe properly and I can't sneeze because the pain is too intense. Is it okay to take pain relief or will it just hide the fact that my kidney is in a critical condition. How bad can it be. I notice when I drink beers it is worst than liquor. What is the max I should drink on a weekend?
