The 20 years of high level contact sports, weight training and few years of doing strongman competitions at the national level finally caught up with me. I just had a laparoscopic hernia surgery implanting mesh to fix a right side inguinal hernia almost a week ago, right before going on Christmas vacation. The surgery was successful and the fist-plus size portion of intestine that was hanging down into my scrotum has been put back in place. As you can guess I ignored it putting my carrier first and didn’t get it repaired for 3-4 years. My job and extracurricular activities are very demanding so it grew to a ridiculous size. For me I ended up with complications from the hernia that forced me to get it dealt with. Almost had emergency surgery three times before they got me in which took about two months from when I first saw the doc about it. Several doctors got to give me their input of the surgery itself, but not one of them told me about the possibility of my scrotum getting all sorts of nasty bruising and swelling. I was expecting discomfort in my abdomen, so the first few days I was paying lots of attention to the stitches and location of where the mesh was placed. The morning of day 3 post surgery I noticed my scrotum and right tentacle swelling and thought that maybe a little bit of fluidblood got in there from the surgery, no big deal. It wasn’t until the morning of day 4 post surgery that my scrotum and testicles became the funky bruised swollen mess that got me looking for answers. When I left the hospital after the surgery the doc gave me 5 weeks bed rest. At the time I thought that was excessive and was going to get it modified using my Christmas vacation to recover and then come back to work and ride a desk for a few weeks until the docs clear me. I had no idea that the worst of my problems would be that my scrotum and testicles would blow up like a balloons and hurt constantly for up to two months. I’ll be having a little chat with the docs about leaving me in the dark about this.

Hi guys.  Week 3 post op here.  My ding a ling is still swollen.  Looks like I went from cut to uncut there.  One thing that helped me alot the first week was using a cane.  Getting out of bed is painful so I hooked the cane on the head board and pulled myself out of bed.  Saved me some pain with that.  I guess we've  all taken for granted the muscles we use to get up off a couch or bed over the years.

I also used the bottom step of a step ladder to get me in my F250.  Good investment.  Good Luck everyone.  I wish you all a pain free 2015

Swelling after the hernia surgery for few weeks or one month  is quite  normal. But if it is going to continue  for number of months or years then it would be a  really  complicated problem. It may be due to entrapment, nerve injury or any reaction to the mesh. If the nerve handling is done properly at the time of hernia repair then it can decrease the chronic pain to an extent.I heard that  Shouldice Hospital in Ontario is a world renowned experts in these kind of causes, preventions and also provide better surgical treatment for hernias without any pain. So it is better you to consult them at the earliest and seek their advice.

This thread has been a great. Being able to hear first hand experience has alleviated a bit of my worries. Like many, I had encountered testicular swelling on day 2 post-op. I had an inguinal hernia and was treated by a doctor in Taiwan (Joshua Hernia Clinic), where he used a modified Shouldice technique. By the end of Day 2, the pain was excruciating (I have a decent tolerance of pain), and I insisted on meeting the Dr day 3. He and his nursing staff mentioned swelling is normal, but to console my worries he set an appointment. Day 3 pain was present and swelling was up to roughly triple its usual size. Where my story differs from most of yours is that my doctor diagnosed me with epididymo-orchitis, which is an infection and inflammation of the testicle. He advise two nights of Ciprofloxacin through IV and seven days of oral antibiotic afterwards. Day 4 saw a roughly 35% in pain reduction and perhaps 10% in swelling size. I regained some strength and the rest of me felt more normal. Days 5 and 6(today) were similar. There is little to no pain while sitting or laying, with the right positioning, but standing for some time will cause tenderness and pain. My body feels fine as if it's only being held back by the inflamed testicle. To note, I was never prescribed a pain killer. I was given Celebrex, an anti inflammatory, which I decided to stop taking today because of the horrific stories on ciprofloxacin. I am advised to intake 500mg of cipro every 12 hours which is a significant amount of arguably the most dangerous antibiotic. My next meeting will be Tuesday where I will see if I am allowed a reduced dosage. Most of my symptoms now seem to be coming from the drug itself. I wonder where my story and yours differ in diagnosis.

Just had my surgery Thursday & today is Saturday & right side repair but my entire sack is 3 times it's normal size & both penis & balls dark, he has me on strong pain killers 2 every 4 hours & I need help getting to the bathroom & it is hard to urinate & just can not have a bowl movement, he actually prescribed laxative knowing I already take softeners?? My next appointment is the 12th of February & my pain script has 50 pills, the pain & pressure I feel is the single worst thing I have ever experienced in my life & I am 50, & have had some pretty bad stuff happen to me, but hands down, this is the worst. Good luck to all & @ this point I will wait out the weekend & either ER or call Doc on Monday if it is the same. He never said anything about this side affect & was pretty froth coming on the pain so???

Hi there. I need your help. Im experiencing the same exact thing. I had an inguinal hernia repaired 11 days ago and my left testicle is swollen and it feels like the spermatic cord is hard and stiff and runs up war into the inguinal canal. Its very thick even thicker than my thumb. Can you tell me if this got any better? Will this go away? How long did it last for you? Im so full of questions and so worried since the doctor told me it was normal and would go away in 3 months but I really don't feel like something is right down there. It doesn't really hurt at all but its so uncomfortable. This is worse than the hernia I had to be honest. Please give me some insight and let me known what can I do if possible.

Amen. I just freaked out, expecting my schlong to fall off at any minute, and ran (as best I could considering the situation) to find the car keys and head to the hospital. I did call them ahead of time, demanding urology to be prepared to clear the runway for me and perform whatever emergency magic was needed to save my junk. Their very laid back attitude, "eh... ya, you can come and see us if you like." MY PENIS IS BLACK AND SWOLLEN - WHY IS NO ONE ELSE CONCERNED HERE?!? Well, as it turned out some ice and elevation has improved the situation and reading the above (all symptoms VERY close to me) has put my mind at rest. Doctors really, REALLY, need to give a little warning that this is a possible post surgery effect. I mean seriously - seeing this with no warning was a fairly harrowing experience. Looks like I may indeed live to have sex another day. Whew...

Thanks much for posting, as I concur with your experience about not getting warned of the possible side effects.

Regards this post I also had inguinal surge done 4 days ago and although technically there is little actual pain the member and gonads are vastly larger than normal with discomfort, discoloration, swelling, and itching. I am relieved to see that these are not abnormal issues from this site.  My follow up visit is an a few days so I guess I won't panic yet.

I also had bilateral inguinal hernia surgery. Mine was laparoscopic. I'm on day 7 post surgery. After talking to my surgeon an researching online it's normal even at your husbands stage to have swelling. The scrotum collects blood and all other related body fluids. My left festival is double in size and is very tender as is both sides of the scrotum. With all this extra weight he should be wearing a jock strap to lighten the load. Keep the scrotum on ice for 30 mins, on and off as much as possible. This will help a great deal. Make sure to take anti inflammatory meds. As long as there no blood in the urin he should he fine. Todd.
