sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!
I too am experiencing all of the symptoms. My neck is a little stiff, but the pain comes when I am experiencing stress. I too smoke 5-10 cigarettes a day. I hope I am not having weakening of my vessels in my head, an aneurysm. I am ironically a nurse. Well, for preventive measures, I am taking an asprin daily to thin my blood, so it will lower my chance of a heart attack or stroke. I really feel it is stres related.

Wow!! So let me get this right... God sends pain to you to make you pray for others? This "God of love" makes you suffer to tell you that you must care about others? Don't prey for others... walk out your front door and help them really if thats what you want, and don't do it because God gives you a headache, do it because you want to. And why only women? Don't men deserve to be prayed for as well? Believe me that "we men" suffer from stress far more than we need to as well. I'm sure that god doesn't want you to forget about an entire half of the population of his planet in your prayers...
As for the guy told us not troll around forums... you're a naive ***. "Feeling better already. Easy Peasy. GL all. " - shows your ignorance. For myself I am not a hypocondriac, I virtually never think about this thing. However its true I have suffered from it for a long time and I am curious to know what it is. I suffer from pain but I don't have crap in my ears, haven't been sneezing and have never had a whiplash... and I'll bet no-one else here has. I have suffered from this for 10 - 15 years. No, its not so important but I would like to know what it is.
The point is though that there are people who suffer a lot, who haven't been able to find an answer from a doctor and for whom this hasn't just disappeared with time. I suffered from migranes when I was you and believe me that constant pain (even if its of minor importance in the "great gamut of illness and diseases humans can experience") can be extremely demoralizing and stressful.
Telling these people who are just looking for an answer that they are being self-indulgent and hypocondriac is insulting and you should be ashamed of your behaviour. If you don't like medical forums then don't read them. Its simple.
As for myself, I have often considered that this might be stress related. I have a tendency to be a stressful person but at the same time this really doesn't seem to happen only when I'm more stressed. Often it seems to happen when things are fine and life is good. I'm really not sure that stress is the only reason.

I relalise that this subect is probably run its course but need to mention my pain its been like it since I had bad flu before christmas my GP has given me antibiotics which I have been on for 2 days but still not any better painkillers give me a bit of relief and yes its worrying sometimes it feels the whole side of my face and behind the ear including my back teeth and neck is just so excruciatingly painful I feel like crying I dont think anyone understands how painful I work for the NHS and have tried to put a name to this and cant doctors will say sinus but is it has anyone got any other ideas
I get the same thing about once every couple months. Seems to come when I'm not getting enough sleep and have a lot of stuff to do, like right now.
It is back right top corner of my head, and is that sharp needly split second once a minute worse pain of my life feel, followed my numbness in that part, and slight headache. :-S I've had it for about 4 years.
I saw a doctor about it and he said if it is not constant, then it is NOT a tumor b/c youd be able to feel it at all times pushing against your skull. He said it is some kind of nerve issue that really has no cure. He said try to work on my posture and stress level.
When you're getting an attack, take a lot of advil and place a hot washcloth behind your neck. It kinda works, either b/c the Doc is right or some kind of placebo effect.
Be well.
I have had the same sort of pain for a couple of years but just now recently has become more regular daily really. Also I've been experiencing pain in my neck. I am very fit and I am starting to do some yoga to stretch my muscle out as I think it could be related to the neck pain. I do believe that sometimes this sort of molesties are related to bad posture and also stress in general and I am trying to combat those through general stretching and I have to say that I have slept much better for the last two days. I'll keep trying these exercises and I'll let you know how I get on.
I have a sharp intense pain above my right ear, I have been having it since tea time yesterday - straight after I had a really stressful event happening that afternoon - I am not a stressed person but what happened to me was pretty scary and that night I have the symptoms, I had them during the night and most of today at work - I honestly think it is stress related - a couple of days and I expect it will be gone.
i think it could be one of these:
sinusitis
trigeminal neuralgia
occipital neuralgia.
it is most probably sinusitis.
Hi, everybody!
Seeing that so many people feel what I feel make me believe that is not something so bad.
I have this pain stabbing pain for three days now, a day after my son fell in the gym and got a head concussion. Maybe the culprit here is the stress. I am taking everyday vitamin C, has great antiinflamatory "powers" and I asked my chiropractor if he can help me with that. He did some electric acupuncture on my ear -no, he didn't sap me! ;-) - and....believe it or not for the rest of the day I had almost no pain. This morning though it begun again, more often than any day before.
i am taking vitamin B12, too, but in form of a creme. It is said it is pourly absorbed when taken orally.
Good luck, everybody!

I just woke up with this pain behind my ears and I am also congested and I am currently having bad allergy issues. I think a good decongestant will takwe care of it. I don't think its nerves, just sinuses.
I have had this pain behind my ear most of my adult life. It comes on suddenly and may last a few days. It occurs rarely. I was told in the past that it is most likely a congestion problem. There is a sinus or tube that becomes blocked. I take a few doses of a decongestant and it goes away. It is usually sharp and painful but has not lead to anything. I just deal with it.Best advice is to see a Dr. just to rule out what it isn't. Good Luck!!
I have been reading what everyone is saying about their headaches. My daughter is 3 years old and she has been having intense headaches above her right ear for a month now. I am taking her to a specialist out of our town. The majority of people her say they have had this for years and nothing is wrong. I just worry because at her age she can not fully explain what it feels like. I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem with their child. The longest one lasted a little over a minute and it always happens when she is active. She cries and screams and holds her head to the right side. The usually happen twice a day and sometimes she will go a day without them.
Thanks for listening.
