sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!

I have also been suffering with really sudden sharp pains to right side of my head and it is behind ear. I can get several in a minute then none for a few hours or even a day. This has been going on for a couple of weeks now and it is starting to worry about it. Even when I put my finger up behind my ear it can feel very tender there. It feels if a blood vessel could burst also a dull head ache can come on. Even if I turn my head slightly pain can come on but not always though. I do not smoke, just social drinker and have retired from work as well. I also keep very good health and go on daily walks. I am not over weight either. Size 12 - 14 in clothes. Now after reading all these comments, I feel I am not the only one and it is not as bad as I think it is. I am very frighten it may become something really nasty in the future. I am going to see my doctor in a couple days time and see if he can put some light to it.  Really enjoyed reading all the comments about this problem lets hope someone can help us out. Thank you Rhona.  Australia
good luck to you
I have been experiencing the same thing, didnt get any answers until I went down to John's Hopkins to see an amazing specialist who diagnosed it as a peripheral neuropathy. He attributes this pain to sjogrens syndrome which I was diagnosed with about 8 years ago. Do any of you guys have autoimmune disorders or take adderall? I am very curious if either of these things are actually the culprit
I have had the same problem and thought it was sinus related but realized it happens when I wear a pair of sunglasses on my head that is too tight.  It actually makes a little indented groove when I wear the pair too long, so I'm getting a new pair.  case solved for me. :)
I know this is an old thread but I finally decided to research my own  above ear pain. I have had mine off and on for a good 15 years. I always assume something serious is going on but given that it pops up every so often for so many years maybe not. It gets me most often when I am tired and hits so hard I noticeably wince. Today it was in a meeting at work and kind of embarrassing. The day before it happened three times throughout the day. I am a very healthy male of 37 years old and don't smoke. I do drink a lot of coffee and occasional alcohol but not excessive. Would hate to have a sudden stroke that maybe I could have prevented somehow if I knew this was an early indicator. Any sure fire cause or known ultimate outcome would be extremely appreciated!
I've been suffering the same symptoms for the last 5 weeks and finally going to see the doctor, I feel fine and then all of a sudden it comes on in the right temple or just behind and above the right ear. Probably the chemtrails and electromagnetic smog and radiation we're subjected to these days. I won't rule out a tumour though.
2 days ago the same crazy thing started; sharp pain / electrical shock feeling behind my ear, and my left ear and left side of my whole head is sore to the touch.  The next morning when I ate it hurt to swallow.  That makes me think ear infection.   But who knows.  The pain is behind my left ear and I am a guy so maybe it is something else altogether, but it really seems like the same strange off and on sharp, nagging pain.  Tonight I laid down with 2 pillows under my knees instead of my head and no pillows for my head or a neck roll as needed and just relaxed and took a clonidine.  It came a few more times, but much more mellow, and seems to have faded all together for now.  I am taking bactrin for the ear ache and will try to sleep without a pillow or use a neck roll tonight to deal with any muscle fatigue from bad sleeping habits.  Hope this helps someone.  I feel for anyone that has to deal with this often.  It is a Chinese water torture.  But as some have touched on, it is a chance to focus on you and your body and how to heal and relax.  And to certainly appreciate when it is gone.  Normal becomes a real blessing.  Cheers.
Wow I just read you post I have the same symptons, I have been deaing wiith this for many years I only get a few times a year, but I am in sever pain every couple of seconds then it will leve for a minute ot two and come right back, I am trying to find out if you were ever cured from this? if so please repond back, I have seen a ENT and family doctor and dentist and still no results. Bad news guys. I have it too. BLAME YOUR CORDLESS PHONES AND CELL PHONES. Think about it. You hold your phone typically with your right hand, to the right ear, no? HELLO
I mean cordless phones and cell phones emit radiation and cause damage. Think about it.
I have the same problem for years so i decided to check with a ENT Doctor he checked me a told me that iam perfectly alright its because of too much stress or thinking about the same thing. he gave me some tablets for the pain, if this still cont, doctor told me to take a scan. so pls my request check with ur doctor..... dont delay.
