sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!

i had this and found out i had a vertebrae out of place. go to the chiropractor!!
It could be trigeminal neuralgia
I'm 44, and I first had these symptoms when I was around 23. It generally hasn't lasted for more than a few days, and I can go years without it occurring. Just got back from a four-day hunting trip in Montana, where there was a lot of wind. The symptoms started during the last two days and haven't gone away yet. It kind of feels like an ear ache in my right ear, but the pain shoots up my head. Lasts for several seconds. A couple of guys on the trip said they experience the same thing and attribute it to altitude sickness. I noticed, however, that the wind seemed to have something to do with it.
I dont know if any one will even see this since has been so long ago..but I started having these same exact symptoms. I too am female in my mid 30's..smoke maybe 10 ciggaretts a day. I have had it and went to the dr with it atleast 4 times. The diagnosis i am given each time varies-first 2 said ear infection but the pain was absolutely unbearable..i was given pain med and infection med. the next time the dr thought it might be TMJ. he gave me pain med and anti inflamatory. i went to the dr again, just today. he said it sounded like a nerve inflamtion in the ear..but said it was rare to hear it from somone my age, said thatits mostly elderly people who had/has the shingles. he gave me steroriod shot, steroroid pack, antiflamatory and paid med and some ear drops as well. i would like to know if you had any further diag.
I posted earlier this summer on this post as I was experiencing sever nerve pain above and behind my ear (along with other symptoms..but this was the most significant).  I was originally given a diagnosis  of rashless singles  on the head (and told by a few Dr that I was making up the pain) and then when it got worse and didn't clear with shingles medication.and ended up hospitalized due to immobility  ..was tested for LYME DISEASE and came up POSITIVE.  I've been educated on ticks and LYME  since my diagnosis in AUGUST and highly recommend that anyone who has this sort of pain  to be tested (LYME mimics LUPUS and various other diseases and can be misdiagnosed...as well 50% of lyme test have a false negative ) .  Just a suggestion....I'm in the Ottawa area of Canada..(where lyme via tick bite is consider rare...only 15% of ticks have lyme and they have to be attached for 48 hours...I didn't realize i'd been bit camping until they showed me a picture of a non bullseye rash after diagnosis ...id thought the weird bite after campting was just another horse fly bite). Ticks are now rampant in  our area this fall for the first time ever (had 5 friends find them in their homes..in the past week).  If there is any chance that this pain could be from a a tick bite/ lyme.(camping , running out doors, animals in the home...ect) .get tested...The quicker you get antibiotics..the better (stage one early detection is within 72 hours of a bite...if you are feeling symptoms...like nerve pain in the head like this post..you are a later stage and need immediate care and antiobotics.)
funny but I am having the same problem today, It started a couple hours ago, but it is not funny, very sharp and sudden, I just started sleeping with the clear gadget for the internet close to my head and also my laptop close to bed I was wondering if that could be the cause not sure but I feel like my head is being attacked and I don;t smoke, I quite this time last year glad to say I have felt a lot better, and I owe becoming a real x smoker is due to my choosing to be a vegan, I just eat raw fruits, and veges before that I would always go back to smoking, no more I am around a lot of smokers where I live. I also lost the 20 pds I tried so long to loose, Life is a lot better after giving up TV, and eating cooked foods, but right now that pain just hit again I will let you know when I find out what is up Thanks for reading.
Holy crap. I just tugged on my right ear lobe a few times briskly and immediately felt relief. I've had this same symptom as everyone describes, but only while or just after having a nasty cold (I had runny nose/cough for 2 days up until today). The pain behind my ear started this morning and slowly progressed up the back of my neck/head ending at the top of my head. The right side of my neck is sore as well. I'm taking a couple tylenol and plan on tugging on my ear lobe some more if I need to Thanks for the tip!
Carol This is the best one I have read. If I did not have the Lord in my life I would not have made it. I am wanting to write a book about blessings that God has done for me. I am not good in composing a d will need to get a writer.
any person that smokes is shortening their life. if you treasure your life, stop the smoking. do whatever it takes. my daughter is a smoker and she has been smoking too long now. I told her, if she loves her son as much as she does, then why would she continue to smoke and jeopardize her health? Smokers look awful too. I look down on smokers now. I was one myself but had the BRAINS to stop at age 40!!!!!!!!!!! One you stop you will feel better. You THINK you feel better smoking, but it is all in your mind. I did it and so can you. Kissing a smoker is like kissing an ashtray! If you love life then STOP SMOKING. If you dont care about your life, then continue smoking. Also just think of the extra money you will have in your pocket.  Smoking is costly.  Costly and detrimental to your health. You are paying for destruction to your body.
I have suffered with this on and off for a while, the pain radiates up over the top of the ear in my case but does feel like an electric shock, really unpleasant sensations. I just want to share that a number of years ago I had my lower wisdom teeth removed and due to the one on the right growing back into the jaw I had a large number of stitches. The area has never been completely right since and every so often becomes sore and inflamed, I have noticed that this is proceeded by the jabbing pains in my head, which I have been suffering from for the last couple of days. I am under pressure with levels of work at the moment so this is likely to my my stress factor. On waking this morning I have found that once again the lower side back of my jaw is inflamed and this feels like what has been building up over the last few days, although the head starts before the pain in the mouth. Off to take some diclofenac and see if it helps. Good luck everyone with getting it sorted.
Same symptoms but lately it is more permanent and it feels like there is pressure at the back of my right eye ? Any comments ?
Actually that poster might have been right on -- for himself. His prayers won't do YOU any good, but prayer can lead to all sorts of good effects in the person who is praying. Turn all your troubles and tensions over to "God", who lifts them from your shoulders.
Let me guess -- your wisdom tooth was extracted by a dentist! RUN, DON'T WALK to a competent endodontis (who, among other things, are expert in the root systems of teeth). (If you can't find an endodontist in your area, go to an oral surgeon. Call ahead and describe your symptoms.) Normally, all molars (including wisdom teeth) have four roots. When the dentist yanked it and found four roots on the tooth, he was satisfied. If he found only 2 or 3 roots, he would have "explored" for the others to get them out -- potentially a difficult thing to do as they may have grown into the bone if you waited too long to get them extracted. It's important to get all the roots out because they can become a center of infection if left in -- like a sponge left in the body after a surgery. But SOME molars have FIVE roots. If the dentist left a root behind you could be experiencing pain due to infection. Infection of the teeth (yes - tooth decay) can cause all sorts of problems elsewhere in the body. The inflammation you're experiencing may very well indicate exactly this. Pain "radiates", so you can't necessarily tell what's hurting. (I know for a fact that pain of gall stones can feel like a back ache.) Infections are very dangerous. Get treatment right away.
A number of people have posted similar things. Sounds to me like what I call a "stiff neck" -- which usually, but not always, involves a real stiffening in the neck. A stiff neck is in the muscles of the head, neck and back, but sometimes feels like it's in your head. The pain can be intense at times, though other times it won't hurt till you move. Prevent a stiff neck by NOT sleeping in a draft, by using only appropriate pillows (so you don't hyperextend your neck), by sleeping as much under covers as possible, and by changing position from time to time as you sleep. Wearing a turtleneck to bed might help -- if you can stand to do that. Your muscles always have a low level of blood circulation to them. It may surprise you that muscles, unlike brain and heart, can do without blood circulation for a fair bit of time (whereas if brain or heart are deprived of circulation, you die). Accordingly, to conserve body heat, your body will constrict your arterioles to the cold muscles. This can result in stiffness of the muscle. So, if you sleep in a draft, what happens is that the muscles exposed to the draft (usually neck and head, because you normally sleep clothed and/or under covers) get chilled, and circulation gets reduced to them. You wake up and find your neck is stiff (or at least feels stiff). I can attest that a stiff neck HURTS when you try to move it. The remedy is to gradually warm ALL the chilled muscles to restore circulation. A hot water bottle applied to the area is the safest means of doing this. (Soaking in a hot bath would work, but you might need to keep your head under water and use a snorkel to breathe!) If you use an electric heating pad, be very careful -- your temperature sensitivity is not absolute and you can "cook" yourself if not careful. (The rule is to put the pad on top of you. Don't lie on the pad. Especially since you can fall asleep in that position.) However, warming alone has never worked for me. I need to start working the muscles as well -- and that hurts. In my case, a stiff neck can sometimes hang on for a couple days, gradually getting less painful. I have never found a pain killer that works on it.
