sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!

I also get the sharp pain behind me ear. It is so intense that stop what I am doing, bend down and squeeze. t only lasts a few seconds. It has been going on for many years. I don't have any medical insurance so can't find out what the cause is.
I just started having this same problem this morning. I have a sharp pain behind my right ear, it doesn't last but a few seconds and it takes my breath away. I have had issues with migraines and cluster headaches for a few years but this is a new symptom for me. Its pretty scary and I am not sure if I should be concerned or not. I would love to get some feedback if I could. Thanks.

I get this pain as well, and I've narrowed down what causes it for me. When I was first getting it, it was scary because it was sometimes accompanied with another symptom, which was one side of my face and head would get numb and tingly, or really oversensitive, like, if I touched it, it would feel like I had a bad sunburn. I had an MRI taken, and it showed up that there was nothing wrong with me. At a suggestion of a coworker, I stopped taking the multivitamin I had been taking. I stopped, and the pain went away completely. I have since tried many different kinds of vitamins on a regular basis to see what causes it, and I have narrowed it down: It's Vitamin B complex. Anything with Vitamin B complex in it will give me that pain. I'm not sure which exact B vitamin it is, but I'm going to start taking just folic acid (B9) and see what happens with that. I'm willing to bet that all of you who are experiencing this are taking a multi vitamin of some sort. Try stopping for a while, and see if the pain goes away. (even if you drink energy drinks every day, stop doing that. Energy drinks, especially Red Bull, contain a lot of B vitamins.) We all may just be experiencing some sort of hypersensitivity to B vitamins. I doubt doctors even understand that this is possible. I know a vitamin chemist, and his whole science is based on the fact that vitamins work the same way in every body. No one in western medicine seems to be taking into account the fact that we all may have very unique biological make-ups. Here is a site that I found that lists negative side effects of B vitamins... Please post back on here if you try easing up on the vitamins and it works for you. I'm curious to know if it's just me, or if others find they are sensitive to vitamins as well. Think about how often people experience strange symptoms of things that never get diagnosed. And then think about how many synthetic vitamins we consume daily, even if you DON'T take multivitamins. It seems that taking in synthetic nutrients in vitamin fortified food is bound to disagree with some of us sooner or later.
I am a 21 year old male. I recently began having this same intense pain behind my right ear. It comes and goes quickly but it really is quite intense. I dont know anything about it - and it seems nobody else does either. But - after reading that someone had seen a dentist about the problem I did realize that it came at about the same time as an infection of my right wisdom tooth. Ive also heard it has something to do with sleep and I have a terrible sleep cycle (4am-1pm). Either way - it makes me want to do nothing but hunt for painkillers and sleep.
DESCRIPTION Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is described as a sudden, short duration (seconds to minutes), severe, sharp, lancinating or electric shock like pain occurring in the face. Trigeminal neuralgia, also called tic douloureux, is a condition that affects the trigeminal nerve (the 5th cranial nerve), one of the largest nerves in the head. The trigeminal nerve is responsible for sending impulses of touch, pain, pressure, and temperature to the brain from the face, jaw, gums, forehead, and around the eyes. Trigeminal neuralgia is characterized by a sudden, severe, electric shock-like or stabbing pain typically felt on one side of the jaw or cheek. The disorder is more common in women than in men and rarely affects anyone younger than 50. The attacks of pain, which generally last several seconds and may be repeated one after the other, may be triggered by talking, brushing teeth, touching the face, chewing, or swallowing. The attacks may come and go throughout the day and last for days, weeks, or monthTrigeminal neuralgia causes facial pain. Trigeminal neuralgia develops in mid to late life. The condition is the most frequently occurring of all the nerve pain disorders. The pain, which comes and goes, feels like bursts of sharp, stabbing, electric-shocks.s at a time, and then disappear for months or years. People with trigeminal neuralgia become plagued by intermittent severe pain that interferes with common daily activities such as eating and sleep. They live in fear of unpredictable painful attacks, which leads to sleep deprivation and undereating. The condition can lead to irritability, severe anticipatory anxiety and depression, and life-threatening malnutrition. Suicidal depression is not uncommon. People often call trigeminal neuralgia "tic douloureux" because of a characteristic muscle spasm that accompanies the pain. The most frequent cause of trigeminal neuralgia is a blood vessel pressing on the nerve near the brain stem. Over time, changes in the blood vessels of the brain can result in a blood vessels rubbing against the trigeminal nerve root. The constant rubbing with each heartbeat wears away the insulating membrane of the nerve, resulting in nerve irritation. There are certain factors that can trigger the onset of trigeminal neuralgia. Stress and genetic tendency are the main factors that are significant for trigeminal neuralgia as causations. Apart from these, in some cases physical damage to the nerve caused by dental or surgical procedures, injury to the face or infections may be responsible for it. This sharp pain is very strange, i never in my 32 years had it , then one day it started, sharp pain rising to a peak then 10 to 20 seconds later gone as if it never happened. I take zero medications and zero herbal suplements, i work in a very low stress restaurant. Went to the ER , tested on various things , they said i was having stress head ache from anxiety , whatever. Now my 13 year old son has been getting them and he never had them before this year either. This seems to be a growing problem, I'm not rulling out gov interference if you know what i mean, vie air waves, or through our water. Think about it.
I am having the sharp pain on the back of my head, right side. I'm 64 yr old male, never smoked. The pain comes so sharp that I wince involuntarily and almost black out. Fortunately the pain only lasts a second, and then goes away. Sometimes the pains happen every few seconds, and sometimes I go for hours without pain. I went to the doctor today, and he said that a sharp pain stabbing at the back of the head like that is not due to a brain tumor or anything like that. He said it was some form of neuralgia or neuropothy, basically caused by a nerve firing for no reason. He has put me on Gabapentin for 6 weeks, which both he and the pharmacist said was very effective on neuropothy (nerve pain). I hope so, because when I'm getting the stabs of pain, it feels like someone is hittting my head with an axe, always in the exact same spot. The spot feels bruised, although I haven't bumped it. Hopefully the gabapentin will do the trick.
to the first post.. did you ever find anything out.. it is the same story for me
Let's lick this problem together. I have read many of the posts on this site related to the pain behind the right ear. I too suffer with this intense pain that comes in waves. I also take multivamins and B-complex supplements. I am of the opinion that the problem is simple and therefore easily overlooked by traditional medicine. I too have been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia and put on neurontin. I could not tolerate the side effects and feared that it would cause live damage as I had hepatitis as a youth. Here is what I would like to propose. I want to create a website devoted exclusively to this issue. I would develop a lengthy questionnaire exploring your medical history with the hope of finding a common feature or trigger that we all share in common that might be contributing to this problem. To protect your privacy you would register with just your email address and a password. Survey findings would be posted online for member review as well as solutions and remedies that members have had success with. I would also create a advisory board of doctors, dentists (I was publisher of Doctor of Dentistry magazine) and other healthcare professionals to review the collected data and offer their suggestions. Those interested in taking part in this venture please send an email to: with the subject: Idiopathic pain behind right ear. I am confident that if we all band together we can find a cause and a cure ourselves. That's the real beauty of social networking. ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed ** Please read our Terms of Use

Hi -- I have been suffering with the ear pain for years -- and it is definately flaring up this week. My doctor told me it is nerve damaged caused by wearing glasses...and my eye doctor conferred. I should wear contact more often -- but needed sunglasses all last week -- so here I am now suffering. Titanium glasses (super light) help. Once the pain is here, crainoskeltal therapy helps.
Try to stay in front of Quartz Heater and your pain will be gone, It shows up when it is cold otside only...mostly - from previous head injuries and when your immune system is low..Well balanced food(vitamines, minerals, phyitoncides, isoflavones, cathechins, fluoride, choline.... etc....) helps mostly... 8-|
hello everyone... i am a 25 year old female and i have been having the same problem as everyone here just a little different. I get a sharp pain behind my right ear and it starts a week before my cycle starts. then it will go away a few days after my cycles begins and they it will come a week before my next cycle. This has been going on for a few months now. This time, the sharp pain hasnt gone away. it still comes every 5-10 min and its a sharp stab and i have to stop what im doing for a few seconds until it goes away. but my cycle came and ended and the sharp pain did not. Im making a DR apt. this week to go check it out. I have a feeling its probably normal and im sure stress has something to do with it and i have had a kink in my neck on the right side for a few weeks now as well so that might also have something to do with it also. My mom told me to take a sinus medication to see if that helps. Does anyone get this pain around their cycle?
I have been getting these same pains as well, for the past 5 days. I started taking Alka-Seltzer Plus for cold and it seems to be helping.
