sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!

I am experiencing these symptoms as well. I know I have a problem of grinding my teeth (bruxism) and I have anxiety. And im going through a lot of stress in law school because of finals. So Im pretty sure the sharp pains on the side of the head and ear aches are from teeth grinding/clenching at night, which is ultimately caused by stress. I read somewhere that the amount of pressure you create by clenching your teeth at night is equivalent to a football player standing on your morals. So im trying stress reduction.
Hello! I've had headaches for as long as I can remember. In high school, they were pretty bad. I am 32 now. I was diagnosed with MS 2 years ago in February. Lately, I have experienced severe instant sharp pains behind my left ear...almost in the back of my head. We're talkin' debilitating pain! Although it's only instantaneous, it's scary and bothersome. A lot of the damage in my brain, according to the MRI, is on the left side of my brain...so maybe I can blame it on that. But, I'm definitely going to call my Neuro. to take a look. I'd hate to have another MRI, but it may be necessary. :(
I've been experiencing this pain as well. Personally, it occurs for me during especially dry weather, and when I've been eating or drinking a lot that day. I think it's a combination of pressure in the sinuses and the chewing/swallowing motions. I've noticed that taking allergy medication makes it almost disappear. Perhaps it's a type of allergic reaction.
I have suffered from this same issue for 10+ years - - I can usually tell it is coming on because I will start getting a pain in my ear or discomfort in my right jaw or gums. Eventually I will get the shooting pain in the same spot intermittently for 2-3 days. It is enough to make me wince however once the shooting pain has stopped there is vuirtually no pain. A slight discomfort or bruised feeling on the side of my head. I have also been told it is a form of neuralgia - - I have simply put up with the pain as I know it will usually last just a couple of days and then be gone as quickly as it came on.
I'm 64 diabetic. I take my diabetic drugs but due to a complain of pain in the arch of my foot while walking. my doctor 3 weeks ago put me on vit b6 50mg x 3 a day for 30 days which he said would help some nerves. This morning I started having this sudden sharp pain on my left cheek close to back of ear. Could this cheek pain be an overactive of the b6 which I have religiously used for the past 25 days. I will go back to him but please let me share your experience.
I had all of these symptoms for the past two weeks. Last week it was so severe and I found this thread but no solution or answer. Today I am back to tell you what I was going through. Maybe it helps some of you. I had Mumps, throat infection and Wisdom tooth coming out on that side which resulted in sharp throbbing pain near the ear. I am 34 female, married. So maybe for many, its just that your wisdom tooth is going to be popping out.... :) Take care of your health guys...
I'm experiencing almost similar to yours. Every now and then I experienced headache on the right side of my head while at work and I noticed that it only happens when I'm almost having my menstrual cycle. When I research about it, it looks like a migraine occurs during menstrual cycle but lately I have had this stiff neck, it's a sharp pain starting from the right side behind my ear runs through my neck all the way down to my shoulder blades. It's a constant pain and very bothering. My doctor prescribed me ibuprofen 600mg 3 times a day and flexeril 10mg also 3 times a day as needed for muscle relaxant. My doctor also recommended to get a new pillow not too elevated and not too low and apply ice/heat pack then self massage to relax the muscles around the area. I followed my doctor's treatment and I'm seeing the progress in a matter of a week but the only pain that didn't go away is the pain behind my right ear. It's not as bad as when it started but I'm hoping it will subsides soon.
hi everyone - i get the "sharp pain behind the ear" thing too. it feels like an icepick being stabbed behind there. the only drug that works at containing it (for me) is tylenol. advil takes too long to work and then doesnt surpress the pain. one time when this was happening to me, i happened to mention it to my chiropractor. he grabbed a firm hold of my ear lobe and gave my lobe a fierce yank upward. you would think that would hurt, given the stabbing situation going on, and it does a little....but begins to relieve the pain almost immediately. it made a popping sound not dissimilar to when you crack a knuckle. he explained that sometimes the eustacian tube in your ear becomes compressed from various things - stress, loud noises, not enough sleep, holding your mouth open at the dentist office, etc. and that this movement stretches out the tube again. so, if you happen to have a chiropractor you trust, ask him/her if they know this maneuver. my chiro told me it's the one thing he learned in college that he thought he would NEVER use and he uses it quite frequently to relieve headaches in his patients. it really does work.
Is it possible to have a brain tumour if you're blood work has come back normal? As i'm havig stabbing pains in my head especially at the right side, and if i was to bend down it gets worse and i go terribly dizzy. My doctor just sends me away with paracetomol, or any other ''migraine'' prescription. It doesnt feel like a migraine it feels more than that. Also, when im walking i could be anyway and i will just get a stabbing pain my head go automatically really dizzy and feel as though i'm about to faint. I'm quite worried, as im only 19.
Yes, my pain is in the same ear that I hold my cell phone to.
WISDOM TEETH!!!!! As simple as that.
What kind of screwed up God puts people in incredible amounts of pain to remind us to pray for other people? Are you delusional? If God is causing pain bad enough to make me want to put a bullet in my head, then he's no friend. You are grinding your teeth from stress, not because of the "lord's glory". So basically God is a sadist according to your logic, or lack thereof?
