sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!
i'm glad it's easy for you. Many people "troll" this boards trying to get answers they couldnt get from doctors. Many of us were once healthy individuals now debilitated by unexplainable weird pains that we are wanting to fix

I started noticing this a couples of days ago. I don't know what caused it. I don't know is it from smoking spice for the 1st time last week or is from my bad posture. So what should I do to help this constant pulsing pain behind my right ear?

Hi I am a 28 year old female and I have the sharp pains on the right side of my head that come and go. Sometimes they last several minutes and sometimes I just get one quick one and then no more. They are quite random and there is nothing my doctor and I have figured out that could be triggering them. I have been dealing with them for about 4 or 5 years now. I was working with a neurologist for about a year and I had just about every test known to man done to me to try to find out what is wrong. My doctor needless to say was quite baffled and couldn't find a thing wrong. The only thing I found out in the 1 year I was seeing him was that my inflammation levels were high indicating possible fibromyalgia or arthritis both absolutely nothing to do with the head pains. I finally gave up on seeing him due to him telling me he just dont know what is wrong with me. These pains are so random that shortly after I stopped seeing my doctor the pains went away for almost a year and a half and have returned recently. I am currently seeking a new doctor who might be able to help me a little more. I would love to know if you have found out any information since you posted this in 2007 so if you could please let me know, thank you.
Very interesting theory. I'm surprised nobody has picked up on this.....
For anyone with these symptoms, sharp pain behind ear with dizziness, especially after already having had either headache pain or neck/spinal radiating pain, these are very likely the causes, in particular the first diagnosis (if there's no trama related): ***this post is edited by
moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed*** I just started to experience the sharp ear pain (base of right ear) with dizziness (no prior trama) and based on previous symptoms ongoing since last week, I really think id the cervicogenic headache cuase by a pinched nerve in in my upper spinal cord (based on a dull achy pain in that area last week when I began to have moderate repetitive headaches ongoing for several days). As for treatment, my doctor put me on a muscle relaxant and anti-inflamation meds for 6 to 8 days. As many have said, regardless if you thihnk you find a name to a condition, always have it confirmed before self-treating with anything "prescribed" previously or for someone else (which you should take). Though my doctor never told me what I have, my symptoms a exactly those of this condition and his treatment is consistent with it. i'll see after the treatment period is finished whether he'll prescribe physical therapy or other related treatment (which is the logical next step I think.) Again, go to a doctor as soon as you can to elimaate your fears. As for God and illness, God didn't bring sin into the world, man did by CHOICE, and the consequence of "sinful" choices have affected man and the earth ever since, so no God doesn't give you pain to make you pray for someone, but He allows us to live, and that in a sinful world, and as a result we all (Christian or not) suffer the choices of the bad (or good) circumstances in life. That said, when suffering, whether it be pain or any other type of suffering, praying ofr others often helps alleviate how we experience our suffering, and definitely can't hurt! ;-)
I have the same sharp pain, mine started after my cycle did and has been going on for four days now. It is a sharp pain that last a few seconds and then is gone. It occurs every few seconds, and the pain is so intense when it comes it has me in tears. The area behind my right ear feels sore it has happened so often, but yet when I look at the area I see no signs of anything abnormal, no redness. The peircing stabbing pain is on the top part of my bone behind my right ear. Sometimes it occurs every few seconds, then later it will occur with bigger spans of a few minutes. It seems to wake me every morning around 3am. I've been taking Advil liquid gels for cold and sinus....it seems to be the only thing that takes the edge off. Yet it never completely goes away. I don't have a cold or any sinus issues but the anti-infamatory properties of the medicine must help a little. I have had a little neck and back pain before the onset of this. If anyone has any answers I would love to know what to do about this. I had this one other time in the past and went to the doctor, but he could give me no answers. When I had it before it was intense, but not as intense as this episode. It has been 4 days straight and I'm wondering if I will see an end, the pain is unbearable. Anyone have any answers please post.
hi i have had the same electric shock stab and the back of my right side head few yrs back. its kinda coming back again. anyway i went to see a doc and he mentioned that it has to do with nerves if im not wrong pinched nerves i think. i was given this pink pill which is egg shaped and the pain immediately stopped and i never had had it since recently. im not sure what was the pill name sorry cause that was few yrs back. just go to a normal clinic and the doc will advise you and by the way as some has mentioned its also related to vitamin b (lack of).
Hi, I am suffering the same pain right now and have been for several days. My doctor sent me for an MRI yesterday. They found sinus inflammation and infection although there are no other visible signs. I have had this before. The pain can get bad and drive you crazy. I went to the ER room before, they gave me an antibiotic, it cleared it up in a few days. I go to the doctor tomorrow. I think they will prescribe an antibiotic again. I believe it is allergy/sinus inflammation and infection. I know the antibiotic cleared it up a couple years ago when I had seemingly the very same thing.
I strongly believe it's a nerve issue. I recently was diagnosed with rashless shingles (Zoster sine Herpete) when I had sever nerve pain in my mid back going around to my front ribs in a band after flu like symptoms...this pain was the worst I've felt in my life....and I've had 2 10lb children without meds:)...went 7 days with no more then 20 minutes sleep cause I couldn't even lay down..just sat and cried all night. Pain diminished after 4 weeks and just became itchy..but at the same time i started having these same zapping / feeling like electricity being shot into my head on both sides at the base of my head (where the it bumps out) and all around my ears and even my ears HURT (not ache..but hurt with the same pain). It's the same sore zapping pain I had in my back and ribs for 4 weeks (this pain in my head / around ears is continuous zaps about 3/4 times a minute when I'm not taking 400gm of liquid advil...and even then ..I can still occassional feel the pain through the meds..just not a sever). There are apparently nerves in your spine that can effect your head and ears...Dr believes that these were effected by the shingles...but I would think anyone could pinch them and have the same issues.
I was reading through these. Came across it when I was looking for answers. I also have pain over my right ear. It just started and doesn't feel good. Something in common with several of you is that I have had coffee and caffeine products today and recently in large doses when normally I don't. Age 23, and female. I don't think it is sinus but I could be wrong. I have had sinus trouble many times before but never quite this symptom. My headache before from sinus was different.
How can you suggest that the person not worry about it, you're not a doctor, so stop trying to act like one.
I have had these behind the ear stabbing pains 2 times in my life. If I ignore them, they get worse until I can't stand them. Both times they have been cured by the same thing. A sinus scan to diagnose what it is, and then, an antibiotic cures it. After 2-3 days on an antibiotic, its gone.
If you find out, please let me know. I have the same thing that started August 8, 2012. It is killing me.
