sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!

Yes mine is the right ear and they is the one I talk on.
Interesting. I had a molar extracted two weeks ago on the lower left and the pain just started yesterday on the right side. I'm wondering if some of it had to do with the fact that I grind my teeth at night and that may be irritating the nerve. I have a dentist appointment Tuesday so I'll have to mention this to them. I also noticed swelling on that back part of my head most likely where the nerve is and it's very tender to the touch. So much so that I can't even lay down on a soft pillow if it's touching it. I was fitted for a mouth guard and will be picking that upon Tuesday so hopefully I'll see improvement shortly after!
what a pious and self righteous assumption you make.
Above left ear flap, sudden piercing pain occurs occasionally, not continuously. Yes next day of alcoholic drinks also, but other time too. During pain period also not contineously paining, but when pressed it is unbearable. Can I get solution?
head pain above and in front of ear
My pain is exactly as the others have stated- a stabbing sharp pain lasting only a moment- it can come in clusters of burst after burst that lasts for hours and ceases for hours ; or just a random one her and there. Only it is on the left side of my head. Located behind and slightly above my ear. It started the day after I had been outside during a very windy day. That evening after being outside I developed a severe earache with shooting pains in my ear drum. It kept me up all night. The next day the shooting pains moved from my eardrum to their current location, and have lasted for days now. The earache, however, is completely gone. This similar pain has visited 2 other locations in my body over the last 2 months. Randomly appearing, causing discomfort for a few hours and then completely going away. The first spot was in my back shoulder area. Just below the shoulder blade. The second area was in my forearm. All three areas are the left side of my body. Have experienced 2 TIA's in the past, I fear there is some kind of clot moving its way slowly through my body. In addition to the stabbing pain the small area that is affected is also very sensitive and sore to touch. Whatever the relavency, if any may be there. I would like to participate in your study.
Hi.i have similar pain.i have pain starting from my right shoulder muscle and goes up towards neck and then above right ear.i also feel burning sensation in my right shoulder muscle and neck.i dont know what type of this pain..too much siting and walking increase the pain.can someone tell me what type of pain it is??
I've had the same experience for about 15 years. I go years sometimes without an episode. Have you learned anything more since you posted this?
Hi, I just came across this post. Every few months or more, I get a sharp zing above my left ear/side of my head. It lasts anywhere from a split second to two seconds. I also seem to get a skip or two of heart beats. I do have afib, but I'm not usually in it. This has been going on for over 20 years, but it does scare me when it occurs.
This is exactly what I get. Only lasts a short time. I am wondering if it is a different presentation of a migrane as yesterday I had pre signs to a migrant but it hasn't manifested like it normally does. But off and on periods of these pains today that stop me in my tracks.
i get the same pain
I am having a sharp shooting pain behind the right ear I havent been to the doctor yet but find that an ice pack stops the pain
I have the same thing..pain..sharp..about an inch or two above right ear. I had it before but never this bad...for 2 days now. Off and on. I do get migraines, but this is weird. I attribute it to sinuses.....but have also been having horrible neck arthritis. Any thoughts??
I want to say I have slight pain in same area I cannot tell you what it is but what I'd like to share with you is that the amount of caffeine taken in is important and I believe that is what is causing your palpitations and it could lead to other things so please be careful with your caffeine use. I heard it also can cause depression.
Got pain in back of my head on left side and in neck and ear what can its be
