sharp head pain above and behind right ear

Hi, can anyone give me a clue as to why I am suffering from sudden sharp head pain above and behind my right ear? It has only occurred in the last couple of days. The pain is coming often, sometimes several times a minute, its very sharp, makes me wince and catch my breath and is then gone. There is no warning and is worrying me. The area is beginning to feel bruised, without being poked about. Sometimes, the pain shoots into the neck down behind my ear. Generally I am in good health, I am of average weight, 36 yrs old and I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes per day. I have been quite tired recently and have noticed in the last couple of weeks some muscle and joint soreness and stiffness (iv'e put down to arthritic or rheumatic pain), especially in my hands, back and neck - not dehabillitating, but quite sore. I hope someone can put my mind at rest that none of these symptoms are connected and the sudden onset of these sharp headache pains is just stress or something similarly normal? Oh, and I do have a cough from a nasty cold with fluish type symptoms which I got in China at the end of August - the cough never completely cleared up, but I guess that is down to the smoking.... I know the answer to that one, but anyone who wants to tell me to stop, please feel free!! Maybe it will help push me into it...! thanks to anyone who can help with the headaches!

It comes on sudden and the pain can go from a 2 to a 10 like an arctic blast. Cluster headaches I was diagnosed ten years ago. They have no ryamn or reason best advice find a good neurologist and then its trial and error to find what will work for you; also, sit your family down and discuss this with them because unfortunately, it affects the whole family. I hope this helps.
I am a very active 80year old female. I started getting these sharp pains last night behind my left ear. A sudden sharp pain that lasts mere seconds, but kept returning. Today I have barely felt it a few times. Not as intense as last night. I will try discontinuing my vitamins. Sharon
My dr. Told me it’s stress anxiety and I have TMJ also but to me it all feels like brain tumor.. had four hours I couldn’t remember anything
I'm going through the same thing - pain in ear feels like its coming from ear drum then next time it's up on top of my head or behind my ear.
Occipital Neuralgia Occipital neuralgia is a distinct type of headache characterized by piercing, throbbing, or electric-shock-like chronic pain in the upper neck, back of the head, and behind the ears, usually on one side of the head. Typically, the pain of occipital neuralgia begins in the neck and then spreads upwards. Some individuals will also experience pain in the scalp, forehead, and behind the eyes. Their scalp may also be tender to the touch, and their eyes especially sensitive to light. The location of pain is related to the areas supplied by the greater and lesser occipital nerves, which run from the area where the spinal column meets the neck, up to the scalp at the back of the head. The pain is caused by irritation or injury to the nerves, which can be the result of trauma to the back of the head, pinching of the nerves by overly tight neck muscles, compression of the nerve as it leaves the spine due to osteoarthritis, or tumors or other types of lesions in the neck. Localized inflammation or infection, gout, diabetes, blood vessel inflammation (vasculitis), and frequent lengthy periods of keeping the head in a downward and forward position are also associated with occipital neuralgia. In many cases, however, no cause can be found. A positive response (relief from pain) after an anesthetic nerve block will confirm the diagnosis.
I am suffering with this same pain. I have noticed it after having an episode of fever blisters (herpes simplex) I believe. When this virus is active I have nerve pain that runs from the top of my head down the right side and behind my ear. I’m thinking it’s related to shingles since shingles affects your nerves. My scalp is very tender as well. Anyone else notice these being related?
Do any of you grind your teeth at night?
My husband is having this same type of sharp pain behind his right ear. Could it be Occipital Neuralgia? Did you ever find out what your cause was? Thank you and I hope you don’t have this anymore because he is really in pain.
Having the same problem and today is my first time, so that's how I got here. This morning I felt my jaw was kind of stiff and I'm pretty sure I've been grinding my teeth hard last night. I'm no doctor, but at first glance it makes sense to me that these two would be related.
What email should I send to?
I went through that about 3 or 4 weeks ago - started with what felt like earache coming on then pain felt like ice pick from way down in ear - every 6 to 8 seconds the pains were coming and traveling up to the top of my head. My dr looked in both ears and said there were no bubbles or signs that would have exploded and killed me - no wax build up -
I have an infection in my right bottom wisdom tooth and also have this pain!
It is completely wrong to say God gives you pain. Jesus suffered at the whipping post just so we can be healed so that we don't suffer. We are already healed by his stripes is written in the bible. I had to comment about that in case anyone should consider that. feeling pain may give you compassion to pray for others but God isn't one to just curse you like that and couldn't let people believe that nonsense. I do agree that you can be healed by praying sincerely for others sometimes but it should be prayer for everyone that suffers pain here and in the entire world wherever they are. I had this pain so much that it hurt just to touch behind my ear and then I put my hand behind my ear and prayed and said this promise out loud that by his stripes I am healed several times. Nothing changed right away so I tipped my head from side to side and massage all around that area for a few minutes and the pain vanished! Prayer or massage or faith or combination or head rocking? Can't believe I can touch this area now! I also put some almond oil in my nose this morning on a q-tip. Hope this helps and that everyone here also feels instantly better!
