Not sure if anyone still checks back or not so I'll share what I have. Four days ago went to the doctor, felt dizzy and had a fever of 102.4 and swollen gums and a sore throat. I'm a 28 year old male. Had an ear infection. gave me amoxicillin and sent me on my way. Come Two days laterI was worse, monies the fever. Tongue was covers in sores, barely swollow, gums still swollen. See a different doc. Says I have a viral infection in the mouth. Gave me a different kind of antibiotic to take in junction with amoxicillin. Made a follow up in two days. Throat is fine. Tongue is horrible, guns swollen. Doctor says it canker sore. When people get them the first time they are awful. Same symptoms. Gave me a third prescription and sent me on my way. We will see how this goes. Still not better in three days and it's back to the docs. Between co pays and medicine I'm down over 100$ and do NOT feel any better. Minus sore throat. I want to cut my tongue off it hurts so bad.

I just went to the doctor with these same symptoms. Extreme fatigue, fever, chills, insanely sore gums, small white lesions on my tongue and inside my mouth, swollen lymph nodes in my neck, and headache. Doctor says it is Herpes Simplex Gingivostomatitis which is basically a form of oral herpes much like any cold sore except occasionally if your immune system is weakened for some reason you can get this instead of just a normal cold sore. The good news is that there is medicine for it and I will go away within 7 to 10 days if you take the medicine. It's not something that stays dormant in you like Genital Herpes. It goes completely away so if you have these symptoms, don't worry too much you are going to be fine.

I have been dealing with these symptoms the past week and am now recovering, and thought I would post in here to provide some support. I did not visit a doctor while ill but I am quite certain that the condition is Herpetic Gingivostomatitis, which is a form of herpes caused by the HSV1 virus. This is the same virus that causes cold sores, it is very common and not some form of serious infection (the numbers range but a common figure is that 80% of people carry the virus).

The entire infection has lasted approximately 10 days. The flu/fever symptoms hit me very badly and I could barely get out of bed. These subsided after approximately six or seven days. The ulcers mainly affected my tongue (probably had close to 10 on my tongue, and another 5-10 spread on my lips/gums, with a very bad cluster on the inside of my top lip) however after eight days the pain from them began to minimise and now on the tenth day they are barely noticeable. Considering the sores persisted for the entirety of my symptoms, they healed quite rapidly overnight on the ninth night, with many of the tongue ulcers having already completely disappeared.
A small amount of my gums swelled up on the second day I believe. I wear an orthodontics retainer/nightguard to sleep and wore it on the second night. On the third day my entire gums were badly swollen, so I did not wear the retainer the next night. I found that not wearing the retainer in conjunction with the swelling caused a quite significant shift in my teeth (I have had my braces off for a long time now and usually a night or two without will cause very little change, however my teeth had after only one night moved quite a lot so that there were noticeable gaps. This was quite painful). In seeking to limit the shifting I wore the retainer to bed up until the seventh night. I could not find much information on whether it is okay to wear a retainer while having swollen gums, and perhaps a doctor/dentist would be better suited to give an answer for this, but from my experience I found it is quite painful however does seem to limit the amount your teeth shift and has not caused any lasting problems for myself. On the seventh day I noticed a small area of my gums where the swelling had reduced so did not wear the retainer that night. The next morning there was a larger reduction in swelling. I am now on the tenth day and have continued not wearing my retainer, however there is still some small areas of gum which are inflamed, however the majority of it has cleared and I expect it will be completely clear by tomorrow at the rate it has been clearing.
Throughout my symptoms I brushed my teeth twice a day and flossed. A brushing technique I used (the following is for brushing the top row) was to have the bristles parallel with my teeth, start with the bristles touching my gum and then pull the brush downwards and twist it a little towards myself as the bristles touch my teeth. I would then repeat the motion multiple times over all areas of my mouth, it had the appearance of continually wiping down on the teeth. Of course for the bottom row you do the same technique however just while pulling the brush up. It may look and feel very weird however it was the only technique I could use that did not cause unbearable pain.
My diet consisted heavily of scrambled eggs, oats mixed with honey, jelly, custard, noodles. If you can chew lightly, steaming carrots and then squishing them with a fork was a useful trick for being able to swallow them. Making a milkshake/smoothie may be a way to get some nutrients into yourself, I found using a straw to avoid the liquid touching certain ulcers helped. It really does suck but try to force yourself to eat through the pain, otherwise you will feel lightheaded and uneasy. Make sure you drink plenty of water as well.
This has been quite long but I hope it helps somebody get through this, it was without doubt the worst week of pain I have experienced, but it does eventually go!

Also note that you should avoid having your saliva touch your genitals, fingers or eyes. The virus can spread to these other areas. Your body will create antibodies to fight the virus after it has been in your system, however if you have just contracted it the body may not yet be immune. HSV1 can be spread to genitals, so avoid any saliva contacting that area. Avoid biting your nails or rubbing your mouth. Especially avoid contact with your eyes (such as rubbing your mouth then eye), as apparently spreading the virus to there is very serious. If you notice any extreme redness of your eye you should definitely go to the doctor.

Hi I just went to the doctor for symptoms exactly the same. It's a herpes virus that lasts 7 days. You can get it from saliva exchange or just any bacteria exchange like touching something that someone who has it has touched and then it getting in your system by you touching your face nose or mouth. There is no medication. You have to wait it out.

I have been sick for the past 7 days now. At first I got the chills, body aches and headache. So i started taking cold meds. After 3 days, I get the sore throat, swollen gums and canker sore all inside my mouth. I haven't been able to eat anything. Been on liquids. It is so painful. I'm taking penicilin. Should I wait and continue the penicilin or go to the doctor. I'm in so much pain.

Hey man. I am facing the same thing right now. What did the doctor say when you visited him?

Honestly this sounds just like herpes. When I contracted it for the first time, I got swollen gums, fever, swollen glands under my neck, and canker sores on my tongue and roof of my mouth.

Im female and I am 13. I have swollen gums a sore throat and blister like sores on my tounge, gums and the inside of my lip. I just went to the doctor and he said the swollen gums, sore throat and tounge blistering were a sort of toncilitus from my asthma medication called Budesonide/Eformoterol, to use it you twist and inhale and drink water straight away to prevent the thrush from happening. I obviously didn't do this straight away with one of my uses and it gave me toncilitus. The doctor gave me a prescription of antibiotics to heal my toncilitus. I'm sorry to all who don't have toncils but have this affect. I advise you go to your doctor immediately to sort this problem out. :)
