white chunks on tonsils

I have been experiencing a recurrence of white chunks on my tonsils. They often cause discomfort to me. Also their texture resembles the white part of a popcorn kernel. I wonder what those white chunks are caused by. Do they maybe indicate some serious illness?

I had a tonsil stone (that's what they are called) today was my first day having one. I was felling something in my throat so i looked and saw a white chunk (resembling a popcorn kernel) It was very irritating against my tongue and throat. I told my mom (i am only a teen lol) she said to gargle salt water so i did but it didn't help?!?! So I just basically tried to get it out with a q tip nothing was working i just wanted to get it out. I wanted it out because first it is really irritating like i said and second i saw on the internet and here it caused bad breath. So then i found out if you like try to take it out its leaves a hole in your tonsils!!! I was scared and stopped trying. So just an hour ago i looked in the mirror at my tonsils and i saw it was gone!!! I drank something before i looked in the mirror maybe i swallowed it. So i was happy i didn't even have it for a whole day. But i don't want one again. So if yours go away i suggest to lay off the junk food (don't get rid of it all together just don't eat as much as you do) that kind of food gets caught in your tonsils. Also brush brush brush your teeth keeping your mouth clean (especially when sick). When your sick its more likely to get tonsil stones. So just keep your mouth clean. I hope this helped :)

Man oh man, I knew there were others with this problem "out there" besides me! I've asked others before if they ever get very smelly white chunks on the back of their tonsils and they said, "no" except for one relative who's throat that I looked at and she had a very small one in the big slit on the tonsils. This is where they usually are found. If your tonsils are covered in them then you have an infection and there is also soreness. Like others mentioned mines, that I've had sporadically, don't cause bad breath. I used to love to pick mines out because I'm a "picker" by nature, lol...Anyway there's no need to panic over the occasional ones that aren't causing any pain. I pick mines out now with a tartar scraper because the end of it is flat but pointed so not too sharp and it sticks in them and pulls it right out! The reason I'm even on this forum is bc I kept tasting it in my mouth yesterday and I do have a cold and there was one there, the first one I've pulled out in a very long time. But I also notice I have the taste when I suck down on the back of my throat, so I don't know if that's post-nasal drip which I will be looking up next or I have some hidden ones.

All sorts of myths out there, but all these really are are are food particles getting caught in the tonsil crypts (the natural "holes" or indentations in the tonsils). Some people have one or several crypts large enough to catch and hold pieces food during swallowing, others don't. It's just a matter of your tonsils' anatomy. There is no "cure" short of having a tonsillectomy. Re above, either some tonsil tissue was left after the operation or what's being described isn't the subject of this discussion (tonsil stones/debris). As food decomposes in an anaerobic environment, byproduct is hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide - hence the bad smell.
All you have to do to get them out is press right beside them with your finger and they will pop right out. Solution solved until you get another one. You can even pop them out before you see them. Just press near the holes in your throat and they will come out.
my cousins and i have had them since teenage years. we call them breath balls. we just hack em out and go on about our business!
Oh dear, I have read that some use toothpicks, twizzers, DS sylluses, bobby pins, etc... I personal have a hooked tool like those at the dentist's. I hope everyone is disinfecting of these removal techniques may be contributing to the issue.
The first time I saw these I would try to pick them out with tweezers, but that is dangerous and painful (if you miss!).
After a few painful pinches I came up with this:
What I do is get a large syringe, attach a long and thin flexible catheter to the tip and tape it to a rigid thin catheter. Do this for guidance, as you will find that guiding the flexible catheter into the crypt (hole) is a daunting task. Fill the syringe with a water/mouthwash (alcohol-free) mixture (I do it with only mouthwash) and put the tip of the catheter into the crypt or hole in your tonsil. Just because you can't see the white chunk, doesn't mean they are not there. Then just squirt the water into the hole and feel the stuff come out.
The first time I did this, a lot of chunks came out. I did it about 5 times before no more chunks came out. Now I do this once a week (with new syringe and catheters) and usually only have to do it once (no chunks are washed out). Sometimes only a few come out and I repeat until none come out.
The water/mouthwash mixture is good because it kills bacteria and helps to give you fresh breath.
I usually do this before brushing/flossing.
i have been waking up and my tonsils and the back of my head herts why???o.O
The only solution is getting them out! It is a painful surgery, but well worth it. I struggled with the same problem for years, but I am so glad at 38 I had them yanked!
This is called Chronic Follicular Tonsillitis.I have the same condition for few years now.I haven't consulted any doctor because it is not painful yet. :p
i am appaled that patients are sheldrake-diagnosing" this very normal condition. Put away ray our q-tips, per oxides and syringes. If it bothers you, see a dr !
I have experienced this. A water pik is very helpful. Using warm water set the water pik on the very, very, lowest setting. This will wash the tonsil stones out of the crypts and crevices of the tonsils. Do this on an empty stomach and over the bathroom sink because you will most definitely gag. It is worth the discomfort because this really works.
Huuuuuu, people......if your feet stink, you don't have them cut off. I'm amazed at people who self diagnose and have anatomy removed because they " know best" . having your tonsils removed SHOULD BE a last resort. Try simple improvement of hygiene (gargling with salt water, expulsion of stone, water pik, etc.) before coming to the conclusion of having your tonsils removed. THEY'RE THERE FOR A REASON!!! And last, consult your ENT physician prior to any rash decision making. CBC M.D.
Best temporary solution I've found is to remove them. Use a simple glass eye-dropper with a curved tip, wet it so it's lubricated and dig around the problem area (usually behind a flap of skin on the left side for me). Sometimes you can just scrape them out and sometimes the suction created by squeezing the dropper works wonders. You'll be amazed/grossed out at what you can get out of there. When you're finished (meaning you can't get anything out anymore but I'm positive there are still chunks deeper in there), use the same eyedropper and flush the area with some Listerine. I'm no doctor so I don't know if what I'm doing is harmful, but I do feel much better (mentally) after I finish. Just my two cents.
